As each member plays a different role in the Meecham family, Mary Ann would be the person I would meet for an individual session. She is the second oldest and is one year younger than Ben. Mary Ann is best described to be the intellect of the family, as she tends to read a lot and is full of sarcasm and dry humor. Her strengths are focused on humor, pessimism, and intelligence. Similar to her mother, Mary Ann’s weakness is to exploit her strengths to hide her hurt, pain and sorrow (emotionally detached). She also finds herself in the shadow of Ben’s (golden child) mistakes and accomplishments as well. For Mary Ann, it seemed it affected her with social relationships. Although she had a strange relationship with her siblings and attended school, she avoided to interact and engage with others. During one occasion, Lillian restricted Mary Ann to the house as punishment for a stunt she had pulled; which, was not even effective considering she never went anywhere. Along with a lack of social relationships, she also felt self-conscious about her appearance as well. She wore black thick glasses that did not compliment her facial features and loose-fitting clothing to hide her slightly overweight body. Not only did the big clothing hide her body frame, but it was also meant to avoid drawing attention towards her large breasts as well. As Mary Ann struggled with friendships and self-esteem issues, she admitted to her brother Ben about her depression. In a vulnerable conversation between Ben and Mary Ann, she opening admitted about her sadness and how committing suicide has become an option after Ben leaves for college. She also gave a brief plan of the potential suicide along with commenting her confession should be taken as a warning sign as well. Although Mary Ann and Ben had a love/hate relationship, Ben was still able to identify her sadness and see how the damage had affected Mary
John, as mentioned in the last paragraph, is also at fault when it comes to the lack of communication in his relationship with Ann. He’s described by Ann as slow and not good with conversation. He’s a very work driven man, and it makes it difficult for him to sit with Ann and have a nice, relaxed conversation. Ultimately, because he is a farmer, he doesn’t have many chances to have a nice long talk with his wife, so the lack of communication is not solely Ann’s fault. John, after discovering that his wife has cheated on him after 7 years of marriage, doesn’t confront her. He doesn’t attempt to speak with her at all; instead he decides that her happiness is more important, and it’s implied that he walks back out into the snowstorm and kills himself. Obviously, John’s death could have been avoided if he had actually said something to Ann before committing suicide. However, this can be considered as a very crucial moment of the story, as it proves why a lack of communication is important in a relationship, though to a very extreme measure. Because Ann, and John especially, didn’t have experience sharing their thoughts when they were unhappy, John didn’t have the ability to speak his mind when he needed to the most. They could have potentially talked about it and found a result that wouldn’t have ended in John’s death, even if it hadn’t been the happiest of endings. However, because there was very little communication in their relationship, the two couldn’t find a way to resolve their problems, and it ended in John committing
Slavery in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries consisted of brutal and completely unjust treatment of African-Americans. Africans were pulled from their families and forced to work for cruel masters under horrendous conditions, oceans away from their homes. While it cannot be denied that slavery everywhere was horrible, the conditions varied greatly and some slaves lived a much more tolerable life than others. Examples of these life styles are vividly depicted in the personal narratives of Olaudah Equiano and Mary Prince. The diversity of slave treatment and conditions was dependent on many different factors that affected a slave’s future. Ann is justified in her decision to "sleeps" with Steven, John’s friend. John has not been paying much attention to Ann and he leaves her alone in their house with Steven. Ann also has prior feelings for Steven from when they where in school together. Ann felt that she is unimportant to John because he frequently leaves her alone; she states, "It isn't right to leave me here alone. Surely I'm as important as your father." Ann just wants to feel loved by John but because he doesn't make her feel loved. She sees Steven as the only person who can give her the love and affection she needs.
In literature, a dynamic character changes significantly as a result of events, conflicts, or other forces. In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Mary Warren, the young servant of the Proctor’s is a dynamic character. Throughout the play, Mary’s personality takes a turn for the better. At the beginning of the play, Mary is shy, timid girl who hides in the shadows of Abigail Williams and lets people walk all over her. As the play develops, Mary realizes that what Abigail is doing isn’t right and rebels against Abby. Instead of following Abby, she follows in the footsteps of John Proctor to bring justice to the girl’s accusing innocent people of witchcraft.

This book is the main source of information on Mary’s life, but there is no way to ensure that all of it is authentic. One should be aware of who truly had the control over this book, and how it may have affected whether or not all of the stories Mary had to tell got in. Without following the standard expected of her, she may not have ever been able to share her experiences like this. Mary Prince was able to convey her story of slavery to others by following the expectations set by the Antislavery Society, such as emphasizing Christianity, only including likable character
The narrator makes comments and observations that demonstrate her will to overcome the oppression of the male dominant society. The conflict between her views and those of the society can be seen in the way she interacts physically, mentally, and emotionally with the three most prominent aspects of her life: her husband, John, the yellow wallpaper in her room, and her illness, "temporary nervous depression. " In the end, her illness becomes a method of coping with the injustices forced upon her as a woman. As the reader delves into the narrative, a progression can be seen from the normality the narrator displays early in the passage, to the insanity she demonstrates near the conclusion.

It was approximately 1869 - 1870 when a woman named Charlotte Fiehling "cringed at the sound of the child's beating. She had heard it before, but had never laid eyes the child. The little girl was no more than five or six if she was a day, judging by her size, and her poor legs were striped with the welts of a whip, her body bruised from blows. Her hair matted and infested with vermin, no doubt, and she did not appear to have had a bath of any kind for many days, if not weeks" (qtd. In Shelman 187). This little girls name was Mary Ellen Wilson. Prior to 1874, the United States did not have any laws to protect children from abuse. Though society is still learning, we have come along way. There are still many cases of child abuse, but as a society we now have ways to intervene, and prevent this abuse and neglect. It was in 1874 when the first court case of child abuse was argued. It was the case of, Mary Ellen Wilson. Mary Ellen as a young girl was severely beaten with whips, burned with the iron, cut with scissors, not to mention the sexual, and emotional abuse. Elizabeth unwillingly became the leader of Mary’s opposition, the British Protestants of the time. She attempted to force her younger sister, Elizabeth, into attending Catholic mass in order to set an example for her followers. Mary Anne Warren contends that abortion is morally permissible on the grounds that a fetus is not a person. The whole reason why Bigger doesn’t see what happened to Mary as an accident is because it was what helped him apparently find a sole purpose; as if what happened was what needed to happen in his life. After the death of Mary, Bigger saw it as a way of giving the whites what they deserve as he slowly gained a high sense of invincibility and masculinity. Bigger’s motivation was the way he viewed white America. He convinced himself that his whole life was meant for him to accomplish that one thing. Mary Flannery O’Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1925 into one of the oldest and most prominent Catholic families in Georgia. She was the only child of Edward, a real estate appraiser, and Regina O’Connor. The year after the family moved to Milledgeville in 1940, Flannery’s father contracted and died of lupus. She and her father had always had a close relationship, and 15-year-old Flannery was devastated (Gordon). Catholicism was always a huge aspect of life for the O’Connor family, living across the street from a cathedral and growing up in the Bible Belt (Liukkonen). Flannery attended parochial schools until entering the Georgia State College for Women, where she entered into an accelerated three-year program as a day student (Gordon). He took her hand and put in his lap,” (52). As much as the husband longs to comfort his wife in this situation, he is not able because he is also muddled by the event. Like the baker, the husband can not verbally bring Ann the clarity she needs. However, Carver describes a different form of communication in the way the husband holds his wife hand. Sometimes human touch is the best way to communicate between one another, when words seem to be impossible. As Ann’s stress grows the best offer her husband can bring is for her to go home and take a bath. Both Ann and her husband find comfort in the normalcy of their home. Tradition of the Community: Starting in the Middle Ages, there were the first written accounts of visions of the Virgin Mary, but as the time moved into the Reformation Age, the visions of Mary became more and more frequent. People claimed she appeared them and acted as an instrument of God, telling them to spread the faith and build churches. The most well-known vision that took place during the Reformation when Mary appeared to Juan Diego of Guadalupe, Mexico in 1531.There were many reported miracles in the town that seemed to point to a divine being helping, for example, the roses in the middle of winter, an uncle miraculously cured of a deadly illness, and the image of the Virgin Mary on Juan’s tunic. This vision led to the spread of Christianity to the western hemisphere, and the fact that Mary was speaking Juan’s native language seemed to bring about the belief that Mary is truly the Mother of all Christians and the mediator of the word of God to common people. The vision of Mary at Guadalupe is just one of many that happened during the Reformation, and led to many shrines being built to honor the areas where Mary was believed to have appeared to the people. Each shrine had some symbolic meaning to honor Mary in specific ways.
