The idea of Freedom can be seen in Collection 2 in the textbook. Freedom can be seen in the speech “I Have a Dream” by Martin Luther King Jr. in the ideas/rights he introduces to his country. Freedom, or the lack of it, is in of the graphic novel “of from Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return by Marjane Satrapi when citizens rights to dress are limited. Lastly, in the short story “The Censors” by Luisa Valenzuela lacks freedom when the government’s safety rule is to proofread all letter that go through the system to avoid their secrets being revealed or gossip about them.
The topic of Freedom can be seen throughout Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech. In the speech, Dr. King repeats the words “we will never be satisfied…” in other words, this means that he is fighting for freedom for all the African Americans’ and he also refers to the constitution that states all American citizens, including black men and women would be guaranteed all the rights to life. These statements Martin Luther King Jr. made led to all African Americans to have the same amount of rights as the Americans. Also, it’s the country’s promise to give all rights to every American including black men (his quote used

in this text is taken from the Declaration of Independence). This shows that the laws they live under are going against America’s power. This backs up Martin Luther King Jr. speech that America paid them a bad check and that they have every right to get the freedom they deserve. The lack of Freedom can also be seen in the main topic of the graphic novel “of from Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return” by Marjane Satrapi. In the graphic novel, it shows how scared the main character is if she shows 1 little piece of inappropriate clothing or inappropriate behavior and the exact quote from the story asks “Where is my freedom of thought? Where is my freedom of speech?” etc. This evidence shows that freedom isn’t really open to the citizens of that country especially to women. In fact, in the story it says the main character spent the whole day in the committee for wearing red socks. This also shows that their government punishes the community severely for small mistakes which shows that the idea of freedom isn’t shown in this story. Also in the story, it shows how the government executed high school student for being rebellious and demanding for their rights. This action from the government shows that the idea of freedom lacks in this country to protect the government. This also shows that the teenagers in that era were influenced by other teenagers which also shows another reason why this country lacks freedom. Lastly, in the short story “The Censors” by Luisa Valenzuela shows the lack of freedom as well.
In the story the main character, Juan, stresses about a letter he sent to a lady that can get him in serious trouble with the government involving death as a punishment. This piece of evidence shows the lack of care the government gives to their community. Another piece of evidence that shows the lack of freedom/privacy is that every letter sent in their system has to be examined carefully. In other words, it shows that they have no rights to send personal letters to someone else which is important to the idea of freedom, or the lack of it. This also gives the reader a hint that maybe they take this job seriously for hiding their secrets or making sure no one goes against the government
privately.
Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” speech was delivered as motivation to fight for their rights and help paint the picture of what America could look like in the future. He does this by in the beginning saying that even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed African Americans are not treated as normal citizens. By saying this Martin Luther King Jr. was saying we should not just be content with being free from slavery. That now it is time to fight for our rights and to end discrimination because of the color on one’s skin.
Every individual has their own definition of freedom. Depending on time, place, religion, or race, this definition varies, but essentially comes back to one point: all men, regardless of anything, are created equally, and therefore have a right to be free. " The Declaration of Independence," by Thomas Jefferson, and Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" are two works addressing this concern. Although Jefferson and King led extremely different lives over 150 years apart, both faced issues of human equality that drove them to write two of the most influential works in American history.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s Impasse in Race Relations is a speech that confronts the audience of the past, present, and future aspects of race relations. The speech addressed by King refers to an impasse as a situation in which there is no escapes or progresses. In the speech, King reveals the different feelings and reasoning’s as to what Negroes have experienced and dealt with. He also shares and interprets various violent and non-violent approaches to racial problems. In this essay, I will present my thoughts and opinions based on King’s ideas introduced in his speech.
Dr. King is an emotional, inspiring and strong speaker. His " I Have A Dream" speech tugs a deep root war of emotions in every American’s heart; therefore, this speech is the perfect display of pathos. Even though pathos overwhelm logo and ethos, they also very much present in his speech.
Freedom has been discussed and debated for a while now and yet no one can completely agree that it exists. Since the Civil, War America has been conditioned to be divided politically. The conflict over the meaning of freedom continues to exist from the civil war, throughout the sixties and in the present. The Civil War was fought over the question of what freedom means in America. The issue was in the open for all to see: slavery. Human slavery was the shameless face of the idea of freedom. The cultural war in the sixties was once more about the question of what freedom is and what it means to Americans. No slaves. Instead, in the sixties and seventies four main issues dominated the struggle for racial equality: opposition to discriminatory immigration controls; the fight against racist attacks; the struggle for equality in the workplace; and, most explosively, the issue of police brutality. For more than two centuries, Americans demanded successive expansions of freedom; progressive freedom. Americans wanted freedom that grants expansions of voting rights, civil rights, education, public health, scientific knowledge and protections from fear.
Freedom is automatically given from birth because everyone is created equal. This can be supported by three different texts: “I Have A Dream” by Martin Luther King Jr., “The Censors” by Luisa Valenzuela, and “The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses” by Bessie Head. People might think that freedom must be demanded, or fought for. But according to the text, this is not true. In “I Have A Dream”, King talks about the difficulties of the African Americans living in segregated states and what he imagines will happen when the American government finally cashes that “check” of freedom and equality for all.
The speech given by Martin Luther King, Jr. to the African Americans and to the white Americans in the August of 1963 was undoubtedly a motivator for many. It is no wonder why a vast majority of people living in the United States can recite words from the speech of a now deceased man. Because his language and diction spoke to all believers in freedom as well as to freedom's adversaries, his message was universal and had a meaning to all who heard it. This continues today. Freedom and equality are something to be attained, for all of us.
The idea of freedom can be seen throughout Collection 2 in our textbook. Freedom can be seen in the short story “The Censors” by Luisa Valenzuela when it talks about the freedom of speech. Addition to that, an article “A People’s History Of The 1963 March On Washington” by Charles Euchner shows freedom in its article when it talks about the segregation occurring to colored men. Lastly, freedom is shown in the graphic novel “Persepolis 2: The Story Of A Return” by Marjane Satrapi as it shows high restriction.
According to Frederick Douglass, having freedom meant having control over one’s life without being dominated and controlled by others.
Throughout history freedom has had many different meanings and definitions; based on race, gender, and ethnicity. According to the dictionary freedom means the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint (“freedom” def. 1). Freedom may seem like something given to everyone however it was something workers had to fight for. Not everyone believed that workers’ rights needed to be changed, which led to a long battle between workers, employers and the government. To the working class people freedom meant making higher wages, having regulated hours, workable conditions and the right to free speech.
Freedom is what the country of America was built on. Freedom is often times the main point of many presidential inaugurations also. Black African Americans though, spent many years unable to obtain freedom. They had to endure through slavery, discrimination, and segregation. Americans did not accept blacks as actual people, they thought of them more as pets and forced them into slavery. They had no freedom whatsoever. Many people have different opinions on what freedom is though. Some people claim that freedom is equality while others think of freedom as being able to do what you want. The texts Letter from Birmingham City Jail by Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy’s Inaugural Address both have opinions on what the obligations of freedom are.
Martin Luther King Jr is one of the wisest and bravest black man the world has ever seen. He has set the path way for the black community and other miniorities. In his Nobel Prize Speech the “Quest for Peace and Justice”, King had three major points that he addressed in the “Quest of Peace and Justice”. One of the points he made was about racial injustice and how we need to eliminate it. King stated that, “when civilization shifts its basic outlooks then we will have a freedom explosion”. Overtime things must change, nothing never stays the same. King’s way of making parallels with this is making the claim is saying, “Oppressed people can’t oppressed forever, and the yearning will eventually manifest itself”. He insisted that blacks have,
In April 1967, Martin Luther King Jr. stated his speech at the Riverside Church, describing that the effects of the war made the “poor, white, and negro bear the heaviest burdens at the front and at home”. What he meant to explain was the heavy toll of death placed on the soldiers in the frontlines and the lack of economic resources for the citizens in both regions, which created support from people like Robert Kennedy, Ralph, Abernathy, and Mariam Right, as well as the initiation of campaign creation like the Poor People’s Campaign.
To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Toyota Financial Services is donating $60,000 to help underrepresented communities. Will BMW and Honda join the efforts? This donation will serve as recognition to the black community. It also highlights the importance of education in minority youth.
When I awakened on November 10, 2016, the first thing I did was check Twitter; the day before had been perhaps the most influential day of my 16 years and I needed to know what the outcome had been. When I saw that outcome, however, my heart plummeted to the ground and everything within me wished that I hadn’t seen it. Donald J. Trump was to be the 45th president of the United States and there was nothing I could do about it. The second thing I did that day was contact my fellow black friends and my white friends to express my outrage at the events that had taken place. We were trying to figure out who’s house to mourn in instead of going to school—our way of boycotting. Something humorous happened in those few minutes, however. I looked at my mother and I thought about how proud she was of me for attending school and getting an education and I knew I couldn’t allow
