Toyota Financial Services is supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities and their communities. This is through $60,000 grants to five institutions and to the Tom Joyner Foundation. These scholarships will help many students get and complete a college education. In the long run, it'll help institutions
stay afloat as well. Underserved Communities are At Risk of Not Graduating Bennet College in North Carolina, Tuskegee University in Alabama and South Carolina State University will all be receiving $10,000 each to go towards scholarship funds. The company is also giving away two $10,000 scholarships to Texas's Wiley College and North Carolina Central through the Tom Joyner Foundation. Tom Joyner Foundation's mission is to give academic support, scholarships and programming to more than 80 institutions. This investment is a much-needed one since education is the base of all success. The Japanese giant has taken a great step to cater specifically to underserved communities. Black excellence is all around us. Toyota is only looking to help boost the positivity and spread it further. The car maker is no stranger to philanthropy. Toyota Financial Services has 10-year streak of supporting the Making Life Easier Scholarship Program and the CBS Baltimore Black History Month Oratory Contest. Toyota, Honda and BMW Are All Doing their Part for the Better The rate of black college graduates is 42%. 62% of white students make it to commencement. Financial support is significant for black students, and it influences graduation rates. There's no denying that Toyota is taking a step in the right direction. For now, Toyota is bringing positive change that should become a trend among global corporations. Other car makers like Honda and BMW have different targets in their philanthropy. They are otherwise geared to develop autonomous, semi-autonomous cars and greener vehicle alternatives. Both kinds of changes are necessary to our society, and both are positive.
The UNCF gave scholarships to African Americans to continue their education and earn opportunities that some Tuskegee Airmen never received. This organization showed the importance education for African American men and it allowed them to go to private colleges and schools, which lowered racial stereotypes. He is a great character and role model towards all African Americans and others. He shows bravery, kindness, and has the eyes to make change happen. He was an inspiration to many less fortunate people than him, and people who had more than him. Do we have the bravery and courage that this man had? Do we have the eyes for change? MLK had something many didn’t. MLK made a change because something was bothering him in his community, he brought people together, was an inspiration to many because of his patience, and had a dream.
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is a prime example of Woodson’s argument on “miseducated” blacks. Although Thomas benefitted from programs like affirmative action, once he reached the high point in his career he supported legislature to end such programs. Hampton University and other Historically Black Colleges and Universities must take it upon themselves to teach their students the importance of contributing to their communities once they graduate and enter into the business world. Colleges like Hampton, Howard, Spelman and Morehouse have the opportunity to produce professionals that can restructure and save the black community. Students who graduate from these institutions have the resources and knowledge that are needed to revive the African American community and their economy. Black colleges must educate their students on the need for black businesses, role models and the importance of staying connected to their culture and community.

Clearly, HBCUs provide several benefits to African-American students. Not only have they helped to combat the cycle of discrimination that minority students experienced before the civil rights initiatives of the 1960s, but they strive to provide a warm, supportive and inclusive academic environment that addresses African-American college students as a whole person. Additionally, HBCUs are increasing their efforts to ensure that higher education is accessible, affordable and achievable for individuals with unique socioeconomic challenges. Despite obstacles, historically Black institutions will continue to play a vital and significant role in the fabric of higher education.

The Jackie Robinson Foundation is a national, non-profit organization that gives scholarships to minority youth for higher education, as well as preserving the legacy of the Baseball Hall of Famer, Jackie Robinson. The foundation provides four-year college scholarships in conjunction with a comprehensive set of skills and opportunities to disadvantaged students of color, to ensure their success in college and to help develop their leadership potential. This four-year hands-on program includes: peer and professional mentoring, internship placement, extensive leadership training, community service options, and international travel along with myriad networking opportunities. I believe we should award this scholarship at a scholarship banquet or luncheon and invite the press, community partners, faculty, staff, students, etc. I believe we should honor and invite Ulysses “Skip” Bennet (BSC first black graduate) to the banquet/luncheon. We should also honor Marti Turnipseed. In the future, I believe we should seek the help of Alumni and generous donors to increase the budget for the student of color
During the 1950s, racism against African-Americans was a prevalent issue in the United States. Although all blacks were supposed to be free, under a corrupt law system, blacks were victimized mercilessly. Therefore, many civil rights activists emerged in order to fight for equal rights for the black community. The most notable activist was Dr Martin Luther King Jr. King engaged in various civil rights boycotts and protests. Out of all of his civil rights efforts, the most prominent was the “I Have a Dream” speech, given on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the “March on Washington” in 1963. The speech illustrated the issue of racism and provoke the audience to sympathise with the blacks while providing hope to the depressed African-American community.
