Modern use of the internet didn’t come to existence until the late 1900’s. Ever since then, the advancement of technology has changed the way humans interact. In the article, “The Medium is the Message” continued by “Media Hot and Cold”, writer Marshall McLuhan discusses and distinguishes media and the way it has change human association. In the other article, “The Banking Concept”, writer Paulo Freire discusses the idea that students are containers, and are deposited knowledge by their teachers. Although both writers discuss different topics, they still cover the idea about how social media has impacted society in a negative way and that students aren’t necessarily prepped for reality. Social media has taken over our daily lives because everything is so technological advanced today. People no longer have to meet in person rather they chat online, and start a relationship from there. Students are using online courses instead of attending classes. For instance, MOOCs which stands for Massive Open Online Courses, is an online courses where students can participate and have access to lectures with their professors and vice versa. In this case, students have the power on how they wish to gain knowledge. Such factors have contributed to a lack in “human association” in which McLuhan discusses in “The Medium is the Message”. McLuhan writes, “The restructuring of human work and association was shaped by the technique of fragmentation that is…” (8). Human life is being recreated by the creation of technology and because of that, there are disadvantages and advantages to the situation. For example, we believe everything we hear on the news to be true because we don’t question things. Media controls the way we think and depending on the type of medium, whether it’s hot or cold, it might require less thinking. For instance, a cold medium would require an audience attention.
