When we used our intellectual competence, Mark Watney fixed a water reclaimer, Stone and Watney altered their vehicles for travel, and I fixed a dead battery in a car.
During Sols 117-118, Mark Watney notices that the water reclaimer is not working properly, so he dismantles the reclaimer and cleans the tubes. The water reclaimer should process 20 liters per day, however, it has only been processing 10 liters at most (Weir 151-152). Watney did not know that the water evaporating from the plants would contain minerals, and therefore, was unaware that the minerals would get caught in the tubing. The water reclaimer would then not be able to process enough water. Watney takes apart the reclaimer to try to find out what is causing the problem, even though NASA had told him not to. Once he takes it apart, he notices that the tubing is clogged with minerals, and so he cleans the tube (Weir 152-154). Watney used his botany knowledge to understand why and

how minerals were getting caught, and he used his engineering skills to carefully take part the reclaimer. In brief, Watney noticed an issue with the water reclaimer and cleaned it out using his mental abilities, just as he and stone used their mental abilities to utilize their vehicles to survive. Mark Watney and Ryan Stone used intellectual competence by using vehicles for survival when Watney needed to travel to Pathfinder, and Stone had to navigate to Tiangong.
Watney needs to get to Pathfinder so he can use its radio to contact Earth, but he has no usable method of transportation (Weir 100). Watney uses his engineering skills to make specific rover attachments so that the rover can travel long distances and support his daily life functions. Similarly, Stone needs to get to the Tiangong so she can fly the Shenzhou home, but she has no way of steering the Soyuz directly at the Tiangong because she ran out of fuel. Stone grabbed the fire extinguisher from the ISS and understood the mechanics of how the extinguisher works to help get her exactly to Tiangong. As Watney had to alter his rover to travel to Pathfinder and Stone used a fire extinguisher to get to Tiangong, they used their intellectuality to modify their vehicles for travel, just as I used my intellectuality to help repair a car's dead
battery. (OPTION 1) When I was in 7th grade, I helped repair a car's dead battery using the internet and tools in my garage. My dad and I were getting ready to go to my sister's championship soccer game when we got into the garage and the car wouldn't start. My sister needed to fill her water bottle up the night before and turned on the light in the car and forgot to turn it off, not knowing that this would drain the battery. My dad was calling USAA to get a new battery when I saw a pair of jumper cables in the back of the garage and suggested we call a neighbor and have them bring their car over so we can jump our car. We connected one red end of the cables to their car, the other to our car, and the black end to their car, and the other end to bare metal. I was looking around in the garage when I saw the jumper cables, and I immediately googled how to jump a car. By using my intellect and ability to think quickly on my feet, I was able to fix a dead battery in a car. Just as many people use intellectual competence throughout their daily lives, so too did Watney, Stone, and I. Watney fixed the water reclaimer and made changes to the rover, Stone had to use a fire extinuisher as a method of travel, and I fixed a dead battery in a car. As shown, using our intellects is not only inevitable but very resourceful.
In Green Grass Running water a narrator and trickster Coyote come together to oversee the two entwined plots: one based on the myth of establishment of the world, the other on the realistic events on a Native American reservation. The title of the novel itself “Green Grass Running Water” exemplifies King’s dependence on the readers capability to illustrate the signs from the mythical and realistic world. This metaphoric title indicates that the main themes are going to play a major role in the tricky defitionion of the real and mythic world, and righteousness and unjustifiable; which are somehow linked to trickster Coyote. King tries to show the reader the underlying message of traditional
In Jennie Capo Crucet 's essay, “Taking My Parents To College,” Crucet describes her own experience as a freshman college student who was faced with many challenges that were unknown to her, as well as the cluelessness of what the beginning of her freshman year would look like. I felt like the biggest impression Crucet left on me while I was reading her essay, was the fact that I can relate to her idea of the unknown of college life. Throughout her essay, she described her personal experiences, and the factors one might face as a freshman college student which involved the unknown and/or uncertainty of what this new chapter would bring starting freshman year of college. Crucet’s essay relates to what most of us
Throughout The Awakening, water the main motif serves as a catalyst to the metamorphosis of Edna. During the length of the story Edna goes through a process of changes that coincides with the presence of water. Water serves as a conduit for liberation and empowerment that facilitates the rebirth and even death of Edna. In this essay I will argue that the motif of water represents the continual transformations that occur within Edna throughout the story.
Green Grass, Running Water by Thomas King is a Canadian novel featuring Native Americans in the midst of their traditions in accordance with the rulers of the modern world in the book, the Whites. Several characters are seen to engulf in a battle with discrimination in an attempt to stay united as a community and find continued happiness in their Native identities. In Green Grass, Running Water by Thomas King, the author states that discrimination negatively affects happiness, which leads to the questioning of one’s confidence that in turn has a negative effect in their search for identity. Although this novel’s characters forgo several acts of discrimination, Robinson Crusoe’s Friday discovery of home, Lionel’s realization of his identity,
In the book Still Water Saints, a novel by Alex Espinoza, Perla is a women who is a spiritual, loving, caring, and full of wisdom. She’s described as a women who helps a lot of people. She owns a botanica full of natural herbs for remedies for stress, pain, or any other health issues people may have. I imagine she works in a hidden small building with herbs on the shelves surrounding the whole store. I feel that she’s very traditional and her presence is warming and comforting. She genuinely cares for the people she helps treat by the way she cares for their needs and how she closed the shop for the boy who wets the bed for privacy. She takes pride in what she does and the way she describes preparing the remedies, is like it’s her purpose in

Media in the Green Grass Running Water is a reoccurring motif that symbolizes the progression of a society’s colonialization. The map symbolize the physical representation of how media is use to colonialize society. A colonial society uses television to promote an acceptable lifestyle; whereas, an image captures the essence of a moment in time. Maps are an essential media that helps society to colonialize citizens, because the map not only separates the land but it also creates division among the people.
Last year I put my expertise to practical use when I organized a 4-H community service project and volunteered in the Cummer Gardens in Jacksonville. In my community service project I taught two 4-H clubs how to plant and take care of potted pothos vines.
While similar, the terms stereotype, prejudice, and discrimination all have their own distinct meanings. Gorham defines stereotypes as the organization of beliefs and assumptions people have toward social groups (19). Stereotypes can often be misrepresentative of a particular group because people unknowingly make assumptions about other people based on the knowledge they have acquired from media and/or people not in that particular social group. Examples of stereotypes can be beliefs that people of Asian descent are inherently good at math or that all black men are criminals. Unlike stereotypes which are predetermined assumptions people make about social groups, prejudice is holding negative feelings toward a group of people without fairly
I have proposed thousands of advancements in science and in exchange have received eons more wisdom. My designs for an underwater apparatus have benefited society immensely and left a huge mark on technology. “My design for an underwater breathing apparatus consists of cane tubes joined by leather, with steel rings to prevent them from being crushed by the water pressure” (“Leonardo da Vinci” British). “The tubes are attached to a face mask and at the other end to a bell-shaped float to keep openings above water.” (“Leonardo da Vinci” British). “Other drawings for diving suits include a coat with a pouch to hold a leather wine skin to store air and a urination bottle so the diver could remain underwater for a long period of time” (“Leonardo da Vinci” British). All of my drawings were made with limited resources and limited knowledge, granted this, despite all odds I imagined the unimaginable. My designs for a parachute ignited wisdom within society and fueled further advancements. “My parachute consists of sealed linen cloth held open by a pyramid of wooden poles, about seven meters long” (“Leonardo da Vinci” British). “In my notebook [I] remark that with such a device anyone can jump from any height without injury” (“Leonardo da Vinci” British). Moreover, the love for science was not the only reason for my inventions, the functionality of society was of utmost

Hydrometer test is needed as more than 10 % of soil sample passes the 63 µ m sieve (BS 1377-2:1990). It covers the quantitative determination of the particle size distribution in a soil from coarse sand size to clay size. Particles settle under gravity during testing (Head, 1984). The results of hydrometer analysis can be referred to Appendix C1. The calibrations which used in the hydrometer analysis and water viscosity are shown in Appendix C2 and Appendix C3.
Operation: A hydrometer is a measurement instrument used to measure the relative density of liquids, the ratio of a density of a liquid to the density of water.
