“I’m pretty much f*cked. That’s my considered opinion. F*cked.”
Mark Watney (Weir, 1)
Mark Watney said the above lines on the first page of Andy Weir’s bestselling novel The Martian. If anybody were to be stranded on Mars by themselves, they would have the exact same reaction. Many people would panic and give up hope right away, but a very small amount people would calm themselves down, take inventory of their supplies, and try to solve the problem of being stuck on Mars. Mark Watney was one of the few people that would calm themselves down after the initial panic and use their personal traits to solve the problem at hand. Mark Watney used his intelligence, resourcefulness, and even amazing sense of humor to make it off Mars with very little

help, which is the reason I would be honored to be friends with Mark Watney. The first reason I would want to be friends with Mark Watney is that he as a wicked sense of humor.
Mark is able to crack jokes in the most serious and deadly situations. One example is when Mark is being rescued from Mars. Mark and his crew mates are trying to think of a plan to get Mark off of the MAV, which he used as a rocket to get off of Mars, and into the space station. As Mark makes a suggestion, he makes a joke at the exact same time. “’I admit it’s fatally dangerous’…’But consider this: I’d get to fly around like Iron Man.’” (Weir, 353) Even in these strenuous times, Mark is able to lighten the mood with a little humor. Mark is also humorous when he is lonely, and when you would think he is sad. Where many people would be very depressed and lonely on their one hundredth ninety first day of being on Mars- all alone- with no human sole for millions of miles, Mark is still being his humorous self. On day one hundred ninety seven (his crew had to evacuate on day six) he says, “You know what? ‘Kilowatt-hours per sol’ is a pain in the ass to say. I’m gonna invent a new scientific name. One kilowatt-hour per sol is… it can be anything… um… I suck at this… I’ll call it a ‘pirate-ninja.‘”. (Weir, 230). You can always count on Mark to give you a little smile in your day, no matter how gloomy it may
seem. Another reason why Mark Watney would be a great friend is because he is very resourceful. There is a limited amount of supplies on Mars when Mark get stuck there. He makes supplies that were meant to last one month last over five hundred fifty days. Mark uses everything he has to make his supplies last his stay on Mars. “Once I get some Martian soil in here, I can mix in the sh*t and spread it out” (Weir, 14) Mark uses his waste to help fertilize soil that he will eventually use in a potato garden. In order to have his potato farm grow, Mark needs to get a lot more water than he already has. There’s one problem though. He can’t just stroll outside and take buckets of water back into his house. He’s on Mars. Mars does not have water. Mark uses the water reclaimer that NASA sent with his crew to get water. “The Hab has an excellent water reclaimer. The best technology available on Earth.” (Weir, 16) Mark actually uses his other waste to get water back from the water reclaimer. Mark pees into the water reclaimer and the water reclaimer separates the water in his urine from the other stuff. Mark now has some water. He repeats the process over and over and eventually he gets lots of water. Mark can use what is around him to find a solution to any problem. Mark Watney is extremely intelligent, which is another reason why I would be grateful to have him as a friend. After the accident that separated him from his crew, Mark lost all contact with NASA. He was not able to communicate with NASA; however, he did not give up all hope. Instead, Mark worked out a way to establish communication with NASA. Venkat Kapoor, the brains behind the entire operation, says, “’All right. We have communication with Mark.’” (Weir, 118) On sol ninety seven, NASA received the first communication signal from Mark. Mark drove for twenty one days straight to get a broken radio from a mission ten years ago. When Mark got back the Hab (Mark’s house) he jimmy rigged it so the radio would work. Once Mark established communication, he worked with NASA on how to make messages get to Houston from Mars and to Mars from Houston, quicker. The last reason I would be honored to have Mark Watney be a friend of mine is that he survived for over a year on Mars- alone with almost no help. “Six days into what should be the greatest month of my life, and it’s turned into a nightmare.” (Weir, 1) On sol six of the Ares 3 mission to Mars, Mark was thought to be dead after a terrible storm and was left behind. Sol six was the beginning of the loneliest year of his life, but it should have been part of the best month of his life. Mark survived five hundred fifty days on Mars with minimal contact to NASA. NASA was able to help Mark get off Mars, but it was ninety five percent Watney’s own thinking that led to his survival. “I still can’t believe that this is really it. I’m really leaving. This frigid desert has been my home for a year and a half. I figured out how to survive…” (Weir, 341) On sol five hundred forty nine, Mark blasts of Mars with a rocket from a mission that would happen soon. Mark meets up with his crew in space, and is able to make the journey home. Mark Watney can use everything around him to make him survive, he is smart enough to make contact with NASA, which was critical to his survival, he can make anyone laugh in what may seem like the worst of times, and he survived on Mars, alone, for a year and a half. All the reasons are why I would be honored to be friends with Mark. Mark turned a situation that seemed impossible to overcome and uses all of his best personal traits to do the impossible. So next time you seem to be in an impossible situation, relax and think of a solution. Using your skills, you could become as admired as Mark Watney is, for doing the impossible.
Charley Goddard when into the war when he was fifteen years old he when into the war only to be a man. He was not thinking of what he would have to live on, the conditions he had to live under. He was not thinking that he would have to see the things that he had seen, doing the things that he had to do to stay alive. When Charley entered the war he wasn’t scared mostly because the didn’t do much. When the war really started to “kick up” or become more intense he started to get scared, he almost threw up half of the time. He didn’t think he would have to walk and take cover from dead men- dead friends. When Charley was out of the war he was twenty one. He was walking with a cane and is complaining that he was too old. When Charley said he was too old he wasn't talking about his age he was talking about the things he had seen.
There is no doubt that Miss. Strangeworth is not an easy person to deal with, let alone live with, and although her character is fictional, there are many people with the same personality. We can tell quite easily that she is a very meticulous woman, with a lot of perfectionist tendencies, a few of which are to nitpick people’s lives and make sure that even the most minute detail is up to her standards. I know of someone with these attributes and as difficult as they are to deal with, with their list of requirements to be met and their eagle-eye for detail in even the smallest things, they mean the best, and are always trying to help, despite the possible repercussions.
Andy Weir's book, The Martian, is laced with conflict, both external and internal. From the beginning of the book, Weir shocks the reader with the dramatic opening of "I'm pretty screwed." This is the reader's first glimpse that there is conflict between natures bloodthirsty determination to kill the book's main character Mark Watney, an astronaut, botanist and an engineer, and Mark's desire to survive against all odds. In his daily logs Mark narrates his deathly encounters and near-death experiences with nature. Mark's logs record every event in which nature strives to get the best of him and yet he is able to keep his sense of humor throughout. In one of his logs Mark humorously states " I was just one of her crew. Actually, I was the very
A Ticket out of the Past By (Teresa) Yung-Ching Chuang. Life is like an ascent, the more you climb, the higher you will get. J. C. Burke skilfully undertakes this philosophy as a source of inspiration for ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’. It is not another crazy adventurous tale with a heroic storyline that seems unrealistic; the novel is about individual representation as Burke insightfully illustrates the long and slow journey of Tom Brennan, navigating through his road of self-discovery that eventually leads to his destination and achieves his “ticket out of the past” (Burke, pg 182). The catalyst of the novel is a traumatic car accident causing two instant deaths and one paralysis.
to begin climbing in the first place. Chris McCandless was determined to not only go but to complete the climb as well. Furthermore, as Chris aged and entered high school, his rareness showed even more prominently. He became the captain of the cross-country team. He loved the role and concocted grueling training regimens that his teammates remember still well. “He was really into pushing himself,” recalls Gordy Cucullu, a former member of the team. “Chris invented this workout he called Road Warriors: he would lead us on long, killer runs through places like farmers’ fields and construction sites, places we weren’t supposed to be, and intentionally try to get us lost. We’d run as far and as fast as we could, down strange roads, through the woods, whatever. The whole idea was to lose our bearings, to push ourselves into unknown territory.
In the short story The Devil and Tom Walker, written by Washington Irving, the protagonist Tom Walker, is characterized as being a negative man. This is demonstrated through Tom Walker being characterized as being meager, outspoken, fearless, greedy, stubborn, and unloving.
In The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway, Lady Brett Ashley is a representative of the New Woman, changing the American landscape. This is shown when she changes from a female to male role, as she pleases. For example, when she takes the place of a male role she demands that people please her such as, when she ordered Jake to “kiss” (Hemingway, 15) her “once more before [they] get there.” (Hemingway, 15) Although changed back to her female role when “she gave [Jake] her hand as she stepped down” (Hemingway, 15) For a man to help a woman out of a car is known as a chivalrous and an expected action, especially in the past, in addition, the man is suppose to initiate the kiss. Brett is a woman who wants to display a secure, stable, satisfied and independent life to the point where readers are not able to
One of the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird is Bob Ewell. Bob Ewell is a selfish drunk who doesn't know how to control himself. He beats his children and he can’t hold a steady job for long. He is obsessed with revenge for Atticus for making him look like a fool at the trial of Tom Robinson, whom Ewell’s daughter is accusing of rape. Because of his false testimony, he can never be trusted again in front of the whole courtroom. He will do anything to get back at Atticus, and is willing to go as far as going after his children. He also has a grudge against the judge in the trial, and against the wife of the accused. Bob is crazy and delusional and is trying to gain back his reputation by taking down all the people that went against him in
Another fear erected from this novel is the power of seduction over feebleminded women. Evident in a passage from Zofloya, Victoria was swooned even by the sound of his voice, ‘Oh, Flattery, like heavenly dew upon the earth, gratefully dost thou descend upon the ear of woman! Indescribable pleasure dilated the bosom of Victoria, as she listened to the honied accents of the delicate Moor’ (Dacre 156). This villain had a hold over her making it easier to push her towards evil deeds. He promised her security after committing the crimes she wished, ‘…you shall see your desire fulfilled, and I will preserve you from every danger and suspicion’ (Dacre 181). Victoria had wished Berenza dead and Lilla out of the way but required the extra push from Zofloya.
Miss Strangeworth’s character can be analyzed by considering what she does, narrator says about her, and how the characters interact with her. In the story “Possibility of Evil” the example is how people act in front of someone and how they act when they are not around others. People think Miss Strangeworth is a nice lady, but people don’t know the true side of her.
Media makes celebrities seem as if they live life facing no problems or hardships. In reality, they do not live a perfect life, but that characteristic of celebrities' life tends to go unseen. In Charles Dickens’s, A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens develops Mr. Lorry into a character where business engulfes his life. Mr. Lorry continually tries to suppress his emotions using many different strategies. Even though business is always Mr. Lorry’s top priority, he always has a special place in his heart for the people he cares about, the Manette’s. Through the use of characterization and dialogue, Charles Dickens uses Mr. Lorry to promote how humanity overrides one’s business side no matter how hard they try to suppress it.
The Martian is a story that involves a visit to the mars, and after that, the astronauts come out of the Mars leaving behind Mark Watney who his real name is Matt Damon. The team assumed Mark was dead after a strong storm. He tried to survive with the remains of the supplier till he was able to launch his way back to the Earth (MacIsaac, 2015). The story is represented in the Novel, and a movie and these two platforms have some similarities and differences. The movie is the representation of what is happening in the book. Therefore, not everything that it is in the book is covered in the one and half film, therefore several scenarios are left out.
By surmounting the obstacles placed in front of him, how the hero responds shows his true nature and makes his reward that much more worthwhile. Mars is the ultimate enemy in this novel, and it does not care about Mark’s health or survival. It is therefore up to him to use his own ingenuity and training to figure out how to survive. Things for him start out rough: he wakes up, after being impaled by an antenna ray, to find out his crew has abandoned him on Mars. From here on out, Watney must decide how to grow a food source and make use of the resources leftover from the Ares 3 mission to last until the Ares 4 mission. Furthermore, he survives several explosions to the Hab, multiple grueling trips in the landrover, a giant duststorm, having the rover and attached trailer flipped over while going down an incline, and being launched into space. In a way, Watney essentially achieves immortality status. Being stuck on Mars should have meant automatic death, yet he manages to pull himself together, form a plan, and adapt whenever the plan fails and nearly kills him. This also reveals a lot about his character. With the occasional much-deserved griping, Watney meets every setback with sarcasm and the grim reality that he could die at any point before his rescue. He does not complain or excessively lament about his situation like Väinämӧinen did, but instead

I am writing on behalf of the hero Neville Longbottom to nominate him for the 2017 Nobel Morality Prize. I believe Mr. Longbottom should receive this award for his courageous acts portrayed in his last seven years of his schooling. Neville has wholeheartedly built his character showing traits of faith and bravery to help the great of good for his school, and the entire wizarding world, because of this, I feel confident that Neville is deserving of this fundamental award.
