Did you know that marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug? According to the article, Marijuana: Should the United States Legalize Marijuana?, marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug in America. Marijuana is not only common, but it can be beneficial. It serves many health purposes and tax benefits for the citizens of America, plus if it were legal, the government wouldn’t have to incarcerate users. There are many people who think marijuana should not be legal because of the fact it is a drug and it can be addictive. Even though it is a drug, no one has ever died from an overdose and it is very hard to get addicted but not impossible. In the article, Marijuana: Should the United States Legalize Marijuana? the author writes, “Advocates of medical uses for marijuana claim that the drug can improve the appetite of cancer and AIDS patients.” This means that marijuana can and will increase your appetite after smoking it, so when people with cancer and AIDS won’t eat, it will expand their appetite. However, many claim that smoking marijuana will lead to numerous health problems in the lungs as stated in the same article, “Smoking marijuana, they maintain, is an unhealthy, unproductive, and potentially addictive and developmentally damaging habit.” Even though it is a drug and can be addictive, it is very unlikely someone will get severely addicted to it. Also, no one in history has ever died from overdosing on marijuana. There has been very little evidence that it leads to cancer as stated in the same article, “There is little evidence that it causes cancer. Its addictive properties, while present, are low.” So, there is very little evidence of cancer and the addictive properties are minimum.
