There are many beneficial health aspects regarding marijuana. Therefor there are many that seek the drug as an alternative to medication, as results are shown faster and there is a positive influence on several diseases. There are many doctors in the country who recommend that patients try marijuana , although having full knowledge that they are encouraging the patient to go against the law. According to Kevin Zeese and William Ruzzamenti , “That 's because there 's very strong evidence that marijuana works as a medicine. It 's effective in controlling muscle spasms for people with neurological problems, in controlling nausea and increasing appetite for cancer and AIDS patients, and in controlling the eye pressure that causes damage in …show more content…
Do to the fact that some of those patients have a hard time keeping the pill in their stomach, because it does not sit well and they end up vomiting it out before it could have had effect on the body. Marijuana can give these patients immediate effect as it can be inhaled and get to the blood brain barrier much quicker than the regular form: pills. “...,is extremely effective in healing short term pain, motor problems, stomach nausea and chemotherapy for cancer patients” (Ultius). Marijuana also offers fewer negative side-effects than any other treatment. According to Executive Director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, Allen St. Pierre, “Evidence indicates that marijuana and its derivatives are suitable for patients suffering from various types of chronic pain, especially those unresponsive to traditional analgesics. In addition, cannabis may offer fewer negative side-effects than opioids - which can be highly addictive - and NSAIDS [non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs], which can induce stomach ulcers, bleeding, and kidney failure.” . The treatment one gets at the hospital could create more problems than the ones already existent. Patients could even get addicted to the medication prescribed to
More and more nurses and doctors are turning their heads when patients are in the hospital and have marijuana tinctures or lotions, because they know that patient needs to have that relief. It is estimated that 2,604,079 people in the United States use a type of medical marijuana. (Number of Legal Medical Marijuana Patients, 2016) If those 2,604,079 people were to be hospitalized, then every single one of them would be losing their ability to use that medical marijuana for an plethora of conditions. Medical marijuana helps HIV patients to help increase their appetite, patients with epilepsy to decrease the neuron signals in the brain, patients with chronic inflammatory issues, cancer patients to help increase their appetite, patients with chronic pain, and even in patients who have
relief with marijuana(Fackelmann 15). By inhaling the marijuana, patients can control the dose they need in order to relieve their pain and it also takes affect immediately upon smoking. Pills on the other hand deliver a standard dose which may be too much for some patients and takes awhile to take affect. Many people have heard that marijuana gives a person the “munchies”, but the munchies may be exactly what a person needs in order to live.
Marijuana is one of the oldest cultivated plants (Nahas 8). Since it became illegal in 1967, there have been questions of whether or not it is good for purposes, such as medicine, other than being a leisure drug. Debates between pro and con groups for the use of marijuana in the medical profession, have been heated and in recent months, referendums have been pasted in a least three states to make it accessible for medical treatment. Personally, I feel that marijuana has the potential to be a significant help with certain aliments, however, more research needs to be done to maximize its potential.
Marijuana is a relatively harmless drug that governments around the world have made illegal. If legalized, marijuana can be beneficial to society in a number of ways: whether it be for medical, economic, or public safety reasons. Marijuana has been proven to treat several life debilitating, and even life threatening diseases. Although it is not a cure, marijuana can ease the pain and suffering of a dying person. Another benefit of legalization is the financial gains that governments will accomplish through the taxation of marijuana. This is a realistic claim if marijuana sales are compared to that of cigarettes; governments make billions each year from cigarette taxes (Caputo and Ostrom 484). Every year law enforcement spends countless man-hours trying to apprehend marijuana dealers and growers. This time would be better utilized in dealing with more serious crimes. This essay will display some main reasons why marijuana is a substance with beneficial uses and applications. First, marijuana can be used as a treatment for the effects of diseases such as AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, and other terminal diseases. A study carried out in California clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of marijuana as a treatment for cancer: “Over 74 percent of the cancer patients treated in the program have reported that marijuana is more effective in relieving their nausea and vomiting than any other drug they have tried.”(Zeese 1990). Chemotherapy for cancer patients often produces nausea and vomiting. Marijuana has been proven to relieve these symptoms and there have been no known side effects recorded (Ad Hoc Group of Experts part 4).
Marijuana has had a negative appearance towards the public and government, but that all seems to be changing. Medical marijuana has started to have a huge impact on the United States and the world. It is a borderline substance that some people frown upon, but it has boosted the economy and has helped thousands of people across the United States overcome illnesses. But most people relate medical marijuana to recreational marijuana, which is still illegal in some states. Although many individuals find medical marijuana illegal, and unnecessary, it is a natural herb used to help symptoms caused by chronic illnesses. Over three million Americans use medical marijuana. Medical marijuana is the most widely used drug used to treat chronic illnesses. The use of medical marijuana has been a controversial issue here in America. Although, there are healthcare professionals that do believe that the use of medical marijuana can be very beneficial for certain patients. Just as there are benefits associated with the use of medical marijuana there are also negative effects associated with it.
Many drugs that are prescribed by doctors have large warning labels on their bottle that list the various negative effects. When my brother would take the medications for his migraines, it would often leave him feeling spacey and disorganized. He would often refer to this spacey state as being in zombie mode. In this instance, the side effects caused by the medications were worse than the ailment they were curing. Christopher tried numerous medications in an attempt to find one that worked for his body. In his article The Woman with Knives in Her Neck, David Casarett explains, “of course, marijuana has side effects of its own, ranging from a dry mouth and rapid heart rate to confusion and paranoia. But one patient figured out a way to avoid those, through small frequent doses” (Casarett). When using smaller dosages of marijuana patients can avoid the side effects of being high that occur when overdosing on marijuana. Another way to avoid the unwanted feelings that can be caused by marijuana is to seek out stains of the plant with lower HTC levels. Once again, when compared to opioids, marijuana is the best choice. By legalizing marijuana for medical uses, patients would no longer experience the unfavorable side effects that are caused by the medications that doctors currently
In a recent article by Okie (2005), some doctors prescribe medical marijuana to deal with chronic or neuropathic pain. Okie provides information about one patient, Angel McCleary Riach who is dependent on the drug marijuana because she found that it helped her control her pain and increase her appetite. The patient and her doctor Ludico, believed that Riach’s health will fail extremely if she is denied the use of medical marijuana, because she will not be able to bear the pain. Although the doctors in the article prescribe marijuana primarily to control pain, some have found it affective for treating muscle spasms, mood disorders, AIDS, migraines, and to increase appetite in cancer patients(Okie,2005) One doctor stated that many of their patients that are using the drug marijuana, but buying it illegally, but for the patients with a family that is too much of a risk. This is a continuous struggle in their everyday life, and without the legalization of medical marijuana these patients will continue...
People should stop arguing about the use of marijuana and how marijuana is bad, because people only like to research the cons instead of including the pros. Despite the fact that people believe everything they hear, they should look up more and try to see how good marijuana can be for them. Marijuana is good for their health, and it has helped to cure people who are very ill. Marijuana is less harmful than tobacco or alcohol, there has been studies proven that people have died over drinking other than by smoking marijuana. Marijuana will be able to have less people prosecuted for the possession of carrying it around, which will help people not get arrested for a small amount of marijuana.
In recent years, many patients who experience chronic pain have turned to cannabinoids as way for pain management. Cannabis (also called marijuana)—from the plant Cannabis Sativa—for analgesic use is that the drug has been used both therapeutically and recreationally for thousands of years. Cannabis is used recreationally because of the euphoria that it produces (Campbell, 2007). Research focused on marijuana has increasingly indicated important connections to pain experience, including the use for the management of pain-related symptoms and medical illness. Cannabinoids can offer analgesic effects for pain related to medical disease, like cancer. It also can be useful for managing migraine pain. Lastly, marijuana has frequently been employed to manage pain-related symptoms, including nausea and vomiting (Zvolensky, 2011). Other medications used for pain management vary depending on the severity of pain by the patient; these medications include Advil, I...
“Considerable anecdotal evidence suggests that marijuana may be effective in treating a number of medical conditions… such as chemotherapy-induced nausea, wasting and anorexia associated with AIDS” (Joffe and Yancy). Marijuana can help treat this conditions, but there are also other people who use marijuana as a medicine for others circumstances. For example, people use marijuana to sleep, because some people have difficulties to sleep in the night and they need this product to rest their body. Also, those people who could only sleep a few hours use marijuana to help them sleep more hours. Some individuals use marijuana for problems of rheumatism, they mixed marijuana with alcohol to pain relive. Moreover people say that the results with this product is beneficially for adults. People sometimes use marijuana to relaxing his bodies. For example, there are a number of people who stress in work and use it for relaxing at home. However, marijuana should not be legalized because using it as medicine can result in negative consequences. “While proponents assert marijuana’s usefulness in treating a variety of medical conditions, opponents counter that the drugs has never been proven effective and the new laws open the door to abuse” (Peron). Those who use marijuana to sleep can have serious problems because if they use this drug every day to sleep their body will became used to receiving this medication daily. Thus, their body will never rest unless they take in drugs to help them sleep and eventually they will become addicted. Therefore, those who believe that marijuana should be legalized need to rethink the severe consequences that using it as a medicine will cause. People are using marijuana as a medication because it is an excuse to take in drug. For those reasons, it will be more beneficial if marijuana stays
Imagine you are lying in your home, suffering from the side-effects of chemotherapy and all you can do is think about how sick you are and what could possibly keep you from being secluded from life and happiness. Marijuana will prevent side-effects linked to terminal illnesses, does not cause any real harm to a human well-being, and would increase US revenue due to taxation and also tourism. Well, according to Ed Rosenthal and Steve Kubby of the book Why Marijuana Should Be Legal, from which this viewpoint is excerpted. They argue that “marijuana is effective at relieving pain, controlling nausea, and stimulating the appetite, and is successfully used to treat a large number of medical problems, including asthma, cancer, AIDS, depression, and glaucoma. Marinol, a synthetic formulation of THC—the chemical in marijuana that is responsible for many of its soothing effects—is not nearly as effective as natural marijuana, they claim.
Those against medical marijuana have given many reasons for why it should not be legalized. One of the main reasons they argue is that “Marijuana smoke may contain known carcinogens and produces dependency in users” (Medical). But there have been many studies it has be proven that it actually does have some harm that is also associated with smoking, but the according to National Academy of Science they believe that “marijuana’s short term medical benefits outweigh any smoking-related harms for some patients”(Medical). Though marijuana has been proven to be less damaging to the lungs than tobacco, a study in 2006 “found no evidence that marijuana smokers had higher rates of lung cancer” (Medical Marijuana). The FDA have conducted test proving the effectiveness of marijuana many times and have found that the cannabinoids in marijuana are helpful in “treating pain associated with chemotherapy, postoperative recovery, and spinal cord injury, as well as neuropathic pain, which is often experienced by patients with metastatic cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes”.
In making a case for the medical use of marijuana, I am not saying that I condone drug use under normal circumstances on any level. For example, individuals that have debilitating medical issues such as uncontrollable seizures, cancer or genetic disorders often have positive reactions to the usage of medical marijuana. Furthermore, advocates of medical marijuana support the practice of marijuana as a safer and more effective alternative than modern day medicine. In sum then, the controversial issue of medical marijuana treatment for patients who suffer from extreme pain are a positive face to shed light on the subject.
Marijuana continues to be one of the most used illegal drugs in the United States. Marijuana has been used for many years and at one time was legal to consume. Throughout the years, marijuana has been used for treatment of different medical conditions and has been used recreationally by people of all ages. While the use of medicinal marijuana has proven to be effective in treating medically ill patients, society continues to question its recreational use and the long term effects it will have on its users. Some feel that legalizing marijuana will only open up avenues for the use of more potent drugs, causing an increase in criminal activity. However, a number of people question why it is considered illegal being it is a naturally growing
Cannabis, also known as marijuana among other names, is a psychoactive drug from the Cannabis plant intended for medical or recreational use. Cannabis is often used for its mental and physical effects, such as a "high" or "stoned" feeling, a general change in perception, euphoria (heightened mood), and an increase in appetite. Short term side effects may include a decrease in short-term memory, dry mouth, impaired motor skills, red eyes, and feelings of paranoia or anxiety. Long term side effects may include addiction, decreased mental ability in those who started as teenagers, and behavioral problems in children whose mothers used cannabis
