To this day society struggles with technology overuse, but when your life turns into a game on screen. In Marie Lu’s novel Warcross, Marie Lu shows what she thinks technology will do to our future, and how it could impact us very negatively. Through the eyes of Emika Cheng, the protagonist, the audience is shown what technology could make the future. Modern-day technology has much power over kids, teens, and even adults, however, this novel technology is life. The future is going to be hurt because of the power of technology. The author uses the goggles to develop the theme of the overuse of technology. The strongest example is shown when the book says, “They believe ‘objects have souls. This makes people get sucked away from being humans and just being online. The goggles really show a good symbol of how technology overuse can be bad, but there are other things like reflection that also show badness in technology. The author also used Emika’s reflection to develop the theme of the overuse of technology. For instance, Emika says, “Everyone has a different way of escaping the dark stillness of their mind. This, I learned, is mine”. This proves to Emika that the people inside of the games aren’t the problem she is. This shows the problem with technology overuse because technology makes people think everything inside or around is the problem but in reality, they are. This helps the readers understand how reflection can help realize the dangers of technology like losing your freedom. Lastly, the author uses the loss of freedom to develop the theme of technology overuse. As illustrated, “You want to be a dictator? You want to control everyone in the world?’. Except for giving up their freedom. Except for the thing that changes everything”. (3 43) This emphasizes that technology can be so bad it even takes away
