“Ah, the creative process is the same secret in science as it is in art,” said Josef Mengele, comparing science to an art. He was less of an artist and more of a curious, debatably crazy, doctor. He was a scientist in Nazi Germany. In general, there was a history of injustice in the world targeting a certain race. When Mengele was around, there were very few medical regulations, so no consent had to be given for doctors to take patients’ cells and other tests done on the patients’ bodies without their consent. This was the same time that Henrietta Lacks lived. Henrietta Lacks was an African American woman who went to the doctor because she had cervical cancer. Her cells were taken and are still alive in culture today (Skloot 41). Hence, her cells were nicknamed Immortal (Skloot 41). Although many, at the time, saw no issue with using a patient without consent issue with what?, on numerous occasions since then courts have determined that having consent is necessary for taking any cells. The story of Henrietta lacks is has similarities to an episode of Law and Order titled Immortal, which is an ethical conundrum. Despite this, the shows are not exactly the same and show differences between them. Both of these stories, one supposedly fictional, can also be compared to the injustices performed by Josef Mengele in Nazi Germany.

Anne Frank also known as Annelies Marie Frank was a sixteen year old girl who got murdered during the Holocaust. She was born in the city of Frankfurt in Germany to her parents Otto and Edith Frank. Anne Frank had an older sister who was three years older than she was and her name was Margot Betti Frank. The Franks were known as a very liberal family who were also classified as a middle class family since their ancestors lived in Germany. In 1933 the Franks decided to move towards Amsterdam since Germany was being overruled by the Nazis. While the family had adjusted to Amsterdam, Otto Frank was really focused on his business since he was new into the city. Anne and Margot were also getting adjusted to the school system and when they were well adjusted they started to have friends who were Jewish and non Jewish. Six years later which was in 1939, Anne’s and Margot’s grandmother decided to join them in Amsterdam as well and be reunited with her two beautiful nieces. The late 17th and early 18th centuries were characterized by The Enlightenment; when revolutions in the patterns in society, science, and philosophy took place (Bristow). Many people started to look for reasoning in everyday life and religion, which more specifically led to the Protestant Reformation led by Martin Luther. As religion and the Catholic Church was questioned, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, an Enlightenment philosopher, invented the idea of philosophical optimism. Optimism stated that the the world was the “best of all possible worlds” because God created it. Voltaire, famous philosopher and author countered Leibniz’s idea in his novel Candide. Candide is a story about the a very naive character, named Candide, who ventures out into the world that Voltaire portrays as having a lot of suffering and consequently, not the “best of all possible worlds”. Because Voltaire disapproves of philosophical optimism, he uses satire to point out its fallacies by ridiculing the monarchy, exaggerating the perils of his characters, and by mocking the Church.
