In the creation myths Scandinavia and Babylon some of the things they had in common were battling and arguing between the gods.For instance, the Scandinavian myth had a lot fighting and battling and a lot of that battling had to do with the creation of the earth. For example, Ymir was an evil giant and the gods could not live in peace while he was around. As a result of taking care of him they spilt his body parts and made them into different parts of the earth. The same was true in the Babylon myth. Marduk, the four-eared and four-eyed giant battled Tiamat, the goddess of the salt oceans. When she lost he split her body into two halves, one half he put in the sky to make the heavens, the other half became the land. In summary these creation
myths didn’t seem to share the same intentions, but the amount of battling in both the Scandinavian and Babylonian myth played a big part of comparing the two.
Most cultures have a creation myth, a story of how humans came to exist in the world. Often, they involve Gods of some capacity who exist without much question or explanation. Many myths have a common idea for the origin of the world, like Earth being born from water, a golden egg, or a great monster. The Mayan creation myth and the Babylonian creation myth are similar in that they both begin with water, and account the creation and purpose of man. They also differ, as the Mayan Popol Vuh chronicles a peaceful tale of trials to forge the Earth and sentient beings to worship the gods, while the Babylonian Enuma Elish tells of wars between gods that lead to the creation of Earth and of man as a servant to the gods.

Hesiod’s Theogony and the Babylonian Enuma Elish are both myths that begin as creation myths, explaining how the universe and, later on, humans came to be. These types of myths exist in every culture and, while the account of creation in Hesiod’s Theogony and the Enuma Elish share many similarities, the two myths differ in many ways as well. Both myths begin creation from where the universe is a formless state, from which the primordial gods emerge. The idea of the earth and sky beginning as one and then being separated is also expressed in both myths.
Norse, Japanese, and Greek mythologies, too, agree on a lot of ideals. They each contain a clash of gods and the death of certain gods in order to form life. The list of creation myths, and myths in general, that relate to each other could stretch out for miles. When Jerusalem fell to the conquering Babylonians in 587 BC, most of what was important to the Hebrew people was gone. They lost their holy city, the Temple was destroyed, and the Davidic monarchy ended (Beasley 221). Following the destruction of Jerusalem, the Babylonian king, Nebuchadrezzar, deported most of the population to other cities, including Babylon. These exiles remained there for about fifty years until the Persian forces, under king Cyrus, took the city of Babylon in 539 BC. The Persian policies concerning captured and exiled peoples were quite different than those of the Babylonians, and because of this King Cyrus allowed the exiles to return to Jerusalem in 538 BC to rebuild the city and the Temple.
Both the Theogony and the Creation in Genesis show nature as a blessing for humans but with negative affects, However the myths differ in the ways that the Earth and humans were created and how humans interact with the deities of the creation stories. These differences include how Gods treat humans and why the Gods/God created Earth. These stories are still being passed on in today’s world and are two of the most influential creation stories to have ever been written. The similarities and differences in the creation stories show that different cultures and religions throughout the world really aren’t that far off from each other.
Humans evolved from hunting and gathering to the beginning stages of agriculture, and put laws in place like “The Code of Hammurabi” to protect themselves and their property from harm and unfair treatment by others in their stationary society. The Babylonian laws defined a person's responsibility that demonstrated that people had to be financially and physically responsible to others in the community. One of the first laws talks about how payment for a service or debt can be made by a person who has no money. In Hammurabi's code it implied that, “If he have no money to repay then he shall pay in corn or sesame in place of the money as rent for what he received from the merchant according to the royal tariff”
The creation myths that I have studied are similar in many ways. They also have differences that show an inherently different way of thinking about the world. All have creators-gods that make the world into what is now. There are conflicts within their world, and these conflicts change the face world. God to god or human to god maybe be involved in these conflicts. Their bloody struggles prove who is more powerful, causing change in the control of the world. Some gods are beneficial to man and others are self-serving, using man only as a tool.
The questions about the existence of life and the creation of the world are always mind-boggling and fascinating, however, the real answer to these questions may never surface. All there is to rely on are the myths, stories and legends passed on from generation to generation by ancestors and the clues they have left. This essay will try to uncover the ancient Mesopotamian and Hebrew views on existence and creation by looking at sources like the Genesis and other ancient Mesopotamian texts and poems. Mesopotamians and Hebrews had contrasting views on how they explained the events in their lives, and through analysis of ancient sources, those differences will be outlined. In such populated and booming areas, human conflict was inevitable and some of the law codes that were placed in effect to establish order within the society will be examined. Throughout it all, god and religion played a central role in these ancient civilizations.
The code of Hammurabi was one of the most important documents in Babylon history. It was adopted from many Sumerian customs that had been around for a while before the Babylonians. Though many of the Laws were adopted from Sumeria they were published by Hammurabi and thus known as the code of Hammurabi. This code had four main parts to it. They were: Civil Laws, Commercial Laws, Penal Laws, and the Law of procedures.
The destruction and deterioration of our civilization can take hundreds of years to replenish. Natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes can destroy what took years to construct in a matter of seconds. Man can create disasters that hinder our growth as a nation. Wars destroy nations as well as lives. In “By the Waters of Babylon” by Stephen Vincent Benet and “Ozymandias” by Percy Bysshe Shelley both authors develop a central theme, thus showing that destruction will desolate our civilization and power isn’t immortal, it is only temporary.
Within the texts of Genesis which belong to the biblical scriptures of the Hebrews, and the myths of Egyptian origin, there are a multitude of similarities and differences. When compared side by side, the most obvious factor of both texts is that a single God was the creator of all that we know today. In Genesis that creator is simply referred to as God, while in Egyptian mythology, the creator is known as Neb-er-tcher. Both creators have striking resemblances, such as the ways they went about the production of the world.
In the beginning there was Chaos, the origin of everything. Then out of the void emerged Erebus (darkness). Until the birth of Eros (love) the world existed in darkness and void. Chaos then gave birth to Gaea (Earth), Nyx (night), and Tartarus (underworld). Alone, Gaea shortly gave birth to Uranus, the sky (Karas, 2017: Megas, 2017). Together they created the Titans, Cyclopes, and the Hecatoncheires. After their births, the Titans produced the twelve gods; the foundation of Greek mythology.
