Recommended: My role modeles
In Little Brother by Cory Doctorow, Marcus Yallow finds himself in a difficult situation when he realizes he has become a leader of the dissatisfied people of San Francisco. He tried to deny that he was the leader of anything, but, whether he liked it or not, he was respected due to his courage, high moral, ingenuity, and his ability to undermine government operations in his city. Citizens whom Marcus had never met, but who believed in what he was fighting for, listened to what he had to say and did what he asked. Although Marcus may not have been aware of it at first, he was a role model and an influential individual in the movement to save the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Promptly after he was released from his prison on Treasure …show more content…
Island, Marcus began thinking about ways he could circumvent the government security measures that had popped up since the bridge was bombed. His first plan was to distribute discs of ParanoidXbox to as many people as he could, traveling around the city, and that is when he first started to gain attention. It began when he “got a lot of email from people who heard in chat rooms and message boards that I [Marcus] could help them troubleshoot their Xnet configurations and connections”(Doctorow 96). From there, he created a blog containing instructions on how to make arphid cloners intended to destroy the system set up by the Department of Homeland Security to find terrorists by tracking civilian movement. He began to receive hundreds of emails a day from other Xnetters who looked to him for guidance, or just people who wanted to give him support and say they believed in what he was doing. He became a role model for others who also lost friends in the explosion and admired his courage to fight when most people wouldn’t for fear of going to jail. People also looked to Marcus because he was ingenuitive, always ready to counter the DHS in anyway he could.
He also looked out for the people who worked with him, posting on his blog whenever he received new information concerning the safety of his followers. After hundreds of unarmed citizens were gassed in Dolores park, he made a website telling the true story and included several pictures to prove it, and was then informed that every picture had a “unique ‘noise signature’ that can be used to later connect a picture with a camera”(Doctorow 204). After using the tool himself, he showed other how to remove this “noise signature” and saved hundreds of people from punishment. He also posted to his blog describing undercover cops on the streets and vans that traveled around the city using wifi finders to locate houses containing “Xnet nodes.” Nobody wants an idiot for a leader, and Marcus continued to show that he was being cautious and was paying attention to the events around him. He also knew when to stop before things went downhill, and eventually posted a message informing people of his personal plan to stop jamming, stating “it’s because I’m smart enough to know that I’m better free than in prison”(Doctorow 244). He was smart enough to counter the DHS and bring the city to a stand still, and also smart enough to know when to back off, making him a role model for those who wanted to make a …show more content…
difference. Another trait that made Marcus a good role model was his ability to lead people and organize events. Even before the attack on the bridge, Marcus was the leader of his Alternate Reality Gaming team, organizing them and giving instructions so they could succeed. He realized that to spend their time most effectively, someone needed to take charge to prevent arguing. Later, he and Jolu set up a “ring of trust” system once they realized the DHS was on Xnet trying to find out exactly who was using it. He gathered people he knew he could trust and convinced them to join this new secure group, as he was also a superb orator. He came up with the plan to hold a digital press conference allowing reporters to get the Xnetters’ side of the story. The “VampMob” was one of his better ideas that worked very well for what he intended, and everyone enjoyed it until the DHS decided to use gas to subdue them again. Marcus did not think he was the leader of anything, but in fact he was a leader in everything he did. Throughout the entire ordeal, Marcus was dedicated, encouraged people, never give up, and stayed optimistic, all crucial characteristics of a leader and good role model.
People do not fight battles they believe they can not win. Marcus knew this and continually tried to keep the masses from giving up by saying inspirational things such as “We are smarter than them. Let’s be smart. Let’s figure out how to jam them, no matter how many goons they put in the streets of our city” (Doctorow 244). At the end of Little Brother, even though Marcus was taken back to Treasure Island where he knew he would be tortured, he simply laughed as they threw him on the floor. He knew he had beaten and embarrassed them. He was also committed to his cause, walking around the city to distribute hundreds of ParanoidXbox discs, participating in the jamming instead of letting others take all the risk, and staying up late reading emails and advising the people who fought for him. He did all of this even after he had been to Treasure Island, which made even more people admire and respect
him. Marcus knew reporters thought he was the leader of this revolt against oppression, but he did not realize exactly how much people looked up to him until he met two kids jamming on the streets. Once he had proven that he was the infamous “M1k3y,” both Xnetters went into a state of total awe, much like a fan would do if they met their favorite actor. The first thing one of them said was “oh, dude, we are so not worthy”(Doctorow 326) and then “dude, it is such an honor to meet you. You’re like our all-time hero”(Doctorow 327). They had never meet Marcus, but they knew what he had done and were willing to do anything he asked them to. Strangers invited him into their home, offered him food, clothing, the chance to bathe, and a bed to rest in. This showed just how much people supported him and were willing to risk for him, because he was brave, intelligent, and optimistic. Marcus disliked the fact that most people viewed him as a role model and a leader in the revolution following the bombing of the Bay Bridge, even though he was exactly that. Strangers all over the city followed his lead in trying to take down the DHS and preserve freedom. He was respected because of his intelligence, courage, moral, and leadership qualities. Dissatisfied citizens needed someone to rally under, and he did not let them down. He became a role model and hero of all those people who wanted to fight back and make a difference in the world they lived in.
Gwynne Dyer titled his article “Anybody’s Son Will Do” because he claims that almost anyone can become a marine. The best candidates for a marine are young males who are about eighteen years old. It is best if they are enthusiastic and naive, so that they can easily be motivated to kill and destroy enemies. Since it is easy for trainers to brainwash and manipulate young men, there is a high demand for young men in the marines. Although some may not be strong, that does not seem to matter much to the instructors because it is more important that young men are able to kill (Dyer 212-215). In addition, Dyer writes, “Drill instructors create the illusion that basic training is an extraordinary challenge, one that will set those who graduate apart from others, when in fact almost everyone can succeed” (Dyer 216). This means that the real challenge
I liked how the book made me really want to read it and find out what was going to happen next and what Vithy was going to do. I also like how the book is really enthusiastic and gave me a lot of detail about what was happening and for once made me picture the book and the scene in my head. I was a bit shocked when I heard the part where Mang lead the Soldiers away and Vithy heard gun shots. I think that Vithy and Mang have a good brother to brother relationship because even though Vithy heard gunshots and Mang didn’t come back Vithy hasn’t given up on Mang and he is determined to find Mang and bring him home. I think that this book is not to far fetched because it tells us what really happened and really happening to people that get put into slavery and good readers can picture the book in there head and imagine what it would have been like for the people. The book to me was believable because it would be really hard to just make all of this up right on the spot and then write a 144 page book about it. I would recommend the book Little Brother for anyone that has a good taste in adventure books and true stories I would probably recommend it for anyone with a good taste for adventure books and true stories because, it is a good
This story was not only riveting, but also one that kept me on my heels for almost the entire time that I was reading it. Stephen B. Oates, a prize-winning author of thirteen books and more then seventy articles, is currently a professor of history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Some of his best novels have been 'With Malice Toward None: The Life of Abraham Lincoln,'; 'Let the Trumpet Sound: The Life of Martin Luther King. Jr.,'; and 'Rip Ford's Texas.'; His writing is riveting as well as courageous. His willingness to get to such length to capture the mind of the reader and hold them in suspense has earned him several awards throughout his lustrous career. Some of the awards that Oates has received are the Christopher Award and the Barondess/Lincoln Award of the New York Civil War Round Table. His work has gained worldwide notoriety and is currently translated in four different languages: French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese.
“To the world you may be just another person, but to one person you may just be the world (Snyder, ThinkExist.com). In Pat Frank’s book, Alas Babylon, Randy Bragg is no one of importance. He is failed politician that lives off his family’s land in a small town, Fort Repose, in Florida. But For this small town lawyer everything was about to change. The United States had been on edge of Nuclear Warfare with Russia for years. Frank writes on about how one man, Randy Bragg, redeems himself from a failed politician to a somewhat of a town hero (Frank).
In this essay I will present the evidence that proves that Brother is guilty of the death of his brother Doodle. All the evidence presented in this essay is from the story "The Scarlet Ibis" written by James Hurst. There are three reasons, which I will give, of why I find Brother guilty of his brother's death. I shall also provide the evidence from the story that proves each reason correct.
The Lesson before dying possessed many dynamic characters throughout the plot of the story, But the most profound character would be Grant Wiggins, Grant was born and raised in Louisiana, son of a cane- cutter and laborer of the Louisiana Plantation; escaping his family origins, Grant sought a more pristine environment for himself through education, Even with a college education, Grant still was treated inferior to white individuals in his community, Grant also displayed great signs of depression and anger towards himself and others, However gradually throughout the novel, Grant changed into a high pillar of his community through visitations with Jefferson, aunt Tante Lou and Reverend Ambrose, He exchanges his negative habits for a positive
Christopher Johnson McCandless, a.k.a Alexander Supertramp, “Master of his Own Destiny.” He was an intelligent young man who presented himself as alone but really he was never lonely. However, he believed that life was better lived alone, with nature, so he ventured off throughout western United States before setting off into Alaska’s wild unprepared where he died. Some may say he was naive to go off on such a mission without the proper food and equipment but he was living life the way he wanted to and during his travels he came across three people: Jan Burres, Ronald Franz, and Wayne Westerberg. McCandless befriended these people, it is believed that he made such a strong impression on them that their connection left them with strange feelings after finding out about McCandless’ death.
Although Marcus is strong and eager, he is actually an easily irascible, impatient, immature, manipulative, unstable man whose
No one really thinks about how devastating it might be to lose a sibling when you're young. However, Holden Caulfield, the main character in J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye,” has to experience this devastation. Holden is merely 13 years old when his 11 year old brother Allie dies of leukemia. The two boys were extremely close and Holden is traumatized, he spends that night punching out windows with his bare hands. Many articles have been written about the adverse effects of a sibling’s death has on a child, even later in life, and Holden was surely effected. After Allie’s death, Holden isolates himself, begins to do worse in school, and grasps onto the concept on innocence and childhood and cannot let go.
Some view John Brown as self-sacrificing, courageous, and heroic because he was willing to die for his cause. Even many pacifists, who believe violence is unjustifiable, overlook his acts of violence because he was willing to die for his stance against slavery. They felt that in the times they were living in, violence can be justified, even though they wouldn’t use violence themselves,...
David Sheff’s memoir, Beautiful Boy, revolves around addiction, the people affected by addiction, and the results of addiction. When we think of the word addiction, we usually associate it with drugs or alcohol. By definition, addiction is an unusually great interest in something or a need to do or have something (“Addiction”). All throughout the memoir, we are forced to decide if David Sheff is a worried father who is fearful that his son, Nic Sheff’s, addiction will kill him or if he is addicted to his son’s addiction. Although many parents would be worried that their son is an addict, David Sheff goes above and beyond to become involved in his son’s life and relationship with methamphetamine, making him an addict to his son’s addiction.
Orwell explores the social impact of government through the means of Big Brother and how it affects social conformity. Big Brother is a character presented in the novel which exercises restriction and maximum control of the mass. Winston writes, “Down with the Big Brother” (Orwell 19). From the beginning of the novel, readers see Winston’s extreme disgust with the government.
Fitzgerald, who hated discussing such political questions, may ultimately be judged not only by this novel, but by the fascinating personal decisions he made in his own life. His conversion to Islam (only a few short weeks before his death in the attack on Pearl Harbor) may or may not have been the key to reinvigorating his writing, but, as Boris Becker reminds us: “He was not a racist. He was a man who was determined, in the best way he knew, to bring all races closer.”
Throughout history, there have been many noteworthy events that have happened. While there are many sources that can explain these events, historical fiction novels are some of the best ways to do so, as they provide insight on the subject matter, and make you feel connected to the people that have gone through it. An example of a historical fiction that I have just read is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, a story about the life of a German boy who becomes friends with a Jewish boy in a concentration camp during the holocaust. The author of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas portrays the historical period well, and uses many details from the real life holocaust to make his story more believable. This book is a classic, and is a very good look on how it feels to be living in Nazi Germany.
New Boy is a short film that envelops the viewer into a third person character and leads viewers to experience how it feels to be an outsider “The New Boy”, the audience experiences this feeling through the Protagonist 's mind in this case “Joseph.” This short film not only focuses on the idea of bullying but also the idea of being an outsider. The positioning of the title “New Boy” on the left-hand side of the frame indicates that the new boy will be powerless.
