Born in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica, Marcus Garvey was a political leader, journalist, and entrepreneur. A hero to millions of blacks, Garvey was scorned by many of the other leaders and intellectuals over basic questions of leadership. The title “ Africa for the Africans “ was an idea to encourage all the African Americans to leave the United States and return to Africa to develop a strong nation. Garvey target was to aimed blacks everywhere, but achieved his greatest impact in the United States. Marcus Garvey founded one of the most important organizations of the twentieth century, the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Reading Booker T. Washington 's Up From Slavery (1901) text he asked himself: “ Where is the black man’s government? “ “Where is his king and his kingdom?” ”I could not find them, and then I declared, I will help to make them” (984). He ultimately combined the economic nationalist ideas of Washington and DuBois with the political possibilities and urban style of African American living outside of the plantation. Garvey describes Europe as being owned by the white race, and in a few more years Africa will be completely colonized by the black race. He wanted independent African nationality, and if America is to help Negro peoples of the world established such , then he will welcome the assistance. The Universal Negro Improvement Association is an organization (UNIA) that was developed by a man named Marcus Garvey. Now Garvey was not the only one to have established this organization, however he was the face of it. His ideas, connections, work, and influences where all huge factors in establishing the UNIA. However, creating Garvey’s vision into a reality was not an easy road, the organization changed a lot through out the decades and has impacted many lives. The Universal Negro Improvement Association and Marcus Garvey did not just stop at singling out one object, but reached out in many different ways also.
Since the 1880?s, when European nations colonized Africa, Europe had almost complete control over the continent, but this changed during the 1950?s and 60?s. By 1958, ten African countries had gained their independence, and sixteen more joined the list in 1960 alone. Although these nations? gain of independence demonstrates the ability of blacks to overpower their white oppressors, Baldwin argues ?The word ?independence? in Africa and the word ?integration? here are almost equally meaningless; that is, Europe has not yet left Africa, and black men here are not yet free? (336). While black people had been legally free in the United States since 1863, two decades before the European colonization of Africa, they were still not truly free, almost a century later.
We want every negro to work for one common goal...We want the moral and financial support of every Negro to make this dream a possibility” (“Soul” 1). Not only does Garvey use inclusive pronouns to draw the listener into the speech but his uses repetition to grant the audience an opportunity to really understand what message he desires them to receive. By repeating the phrase “we want” he calls out to fellow negroes to unify with him as well as whites in order to proclaim that blacks have had enough of being the “inferior race” and they will join together and fight for their rights. The repetition of this phrase helps the listener understand that he honestly wants this to occur as well as it helps to leave a longer lasting impression in the reader’s mind. He utilizes repetition again in his speech “Shall the Negro Be Exterminated?” In this speech, he follows the same lines of using inclusive pronouns and repetition to place emphasis on the speeches main idea. Booker T. Washington was an African American leader who established an African-American college in 1181. Then in 1895 delivered the Atlanta Compromise Speech to an audience of mainly Southerners, but some Northerners were present. In his speech he made a few points. He said, “No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem.” Washington believed that the African American race needed to learn first that manual labor was just as important as the work of intellects. He thought that until they learned this they were not worthy of becoming intellects themselves. The color line is thus important in teaching them this lesson. When talking about the history of African-Americans at the turn of the twentieth century, two notable names cannot be left out; Booker T. Washington and W.E.B Du Bois. They were both African-American leaders in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s, fighting for social justice, education and civil rights for slaves, and both stressed education. This was a time when blacks were segregated and discriminated against. Both these men had a vision to free blacks from this oppression. While they came from different backgrounds, Washington coming from a plantation in Virginia where he was a slave, and Du Bois coming from a free home in Massachusetts, they both experienced the heavy oppression blacks were under in this Post-Civil War society. Cultivating a humanitarian approach, progressive intellectuals ushered in an era of societal reconstruction with the intention to establish primary equalities on the pervasive argument of human race. The experiment poised the United States for rebellion and lasting ramifications. The instantaneous repercussions for both races evolving from the emancipation of African-Americans were plainly stated by the daughter of a Georgia planter in the summer of 1865: "There are sad changes in store for both races" (Nash 469). The long-term ramifications are still in progress. The combination and division of commerce and virtue, north and south, white and black, violence and empathy, and personal and political agendas, created the birth and death of the era of Reconstruction that began during the Civil War and ended in 1877.
