Throughout the book The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier there are many different themes that happen during the story to progress the plot. But there are three main themes : manipulation, power, and choices. All of which are seen by a lot of the main characters. One main and important theme in The Chocolate War is manipulation. Through the whole book there are many instances where manipulation is used as a tactic for someone or a group of people to get what they want, even teachers. One part in the book where manipulation is used is on page 9 when Obie is talking to Archie and he couldn't say what he wanted to say as shown here -You couldn't win an argument with Archie. He was too quick with his words.- This supports the theme of manipulation because in an argument if you can say your thoughts on a subject then you get downsized and and you don't feel as strong about your perspective on the subject than you did before. Another part of the book where manipulation is shown is on page 48 and it The first example is when Jerry refused to sell the chocolates saying “No, I'm not going to sell the chocolates.” The moment he says this the whole story really spirals into place, he doesn't sell them and now the perfect balance of the school is ruined. The second time where a major choice was made is when more kids started to catch on with Jerry's idea as seen here “I never thought of just saying no like you did.” This shows that after Jerry said no to selling the chocolates other kids started to join on and also not sell them. This happening in the school really makes a lot of the teachers mad and nervous and forces the Vigils to take severe action like they never had before. Without all of these major decisions being made throughout the Chocolate War a lot of what took place in the story would have most likely never
Two stories are brought together “A&P” and “Gryphon” to represent the struggles that every character faces. Sammy the main character in “A&P”, and Tommy the main character in “Gryphon” face a struggle that will put them to the test. For Sammy the struggle is, should he stand up to his boss and defend the girls or should he let it go. Tommy faces the conflict of, does he believe the substitute teacher and defend her against everyone else or does he follow what everybody else is doing. In their stories, Tommy and Sammy are put up against a conflict that they have never seen before, and their “job” is to decide what they should do and how they should approach the problem.
The Milagro Beanfield War, written by John Nichols, demonstrates several themes on life. They range from the interactions of the rich and the poor to the hot arid farming climate in New Mexico. All of which have significant importances in this famous novel. Perhaps the most important theme that is represented in this novel is the idea that people should do what is wright no matter the consequences. People are constantly faced with the choice of right and wrong. What they choose not only effects themselves, but everyone else involved. That is why being true to yourself is being true to everyone. "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? Yet if I am for myself only, what am I?"(p. 1). This theme carries the plot throughout the book.
...s that Sammy is taking a stand and that Lengel cannot change his mind about quitting. When Sammy left the store, the girls where long gone. "His face was dark gray and his back stiff, as if he's just had an injection of iron, and my stomach kind of felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter." This quote illustrates that Sammy knows that his parents will not like the fact that he quit, but he realizes that he has to take charge with his life, and make his own chooses without being afraid of what his parents would think. He is very happy that he had taken a stand, and he let no one change it.
Why would a person decide to betray the beliefs they had fought so hard for? In Robert Cormiers novel The Chocolate War, the character of Jerry Renault changes drastically from a rebel to a follower in the end. The school gang known as the vigils and his moral beliefs motivates Jerry’s actions. He feels he must take a stand against evil. Jerry can be considered a hero because of his beliefs. In the end however he gives in to the things he fought against and becomes a follower.
During the time frame of 1450-1750, the Columbian Exchange was at its height of power and influence. Many products were introduced from foreign lands, like animals such as cattle, chickens, and horse, and agriculture such as potatoes, bananas, and avocados. Diseases also became widespread and persisted to distant lands where it wreaked devastation upon the non-immunized people. One such influential product during this time period was the cacao, or more commonly known as chocolate. First discovered and used in the Americas, cacao beans quickly traveled to and became a popular treat in European lands. It was valuable in the New World and even used as a currency by the Aztecs. Only the rich and privileged were allowed to purchase the valuable item in the beginning. Cacao was even used in religious ceremonies by the native people. When it moved to Europe and other lands, it also created a lot of stir. The cacao plant had quite a large impact upon the Columbian Exchange.
As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceived notion about the indoctrination, "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and perplexed. The story is not about heroism but about toil and futility and the divide between the idea of war and the real life and its values. The selected passages are full of violence and death and loss and a kind of perpetual suffering and terror that most of us have never and hopefully will never experience. Both authors ability to place the reader right there on the front line with the main character so vividly, not just in terms of what he physically experienced and witnessed All the complicated, intense and often completely numbed emotions that came along...
Teddy and Summer go to the same school and there is a really bad bully at the school that picks on Teddy. In the book, Summer comes up with a plan to humiliate the bully in front of the whole school and show Teddy that he can stand up to his bully's. The go through with the plan and it works perfectly. This shows that Summer is smart because she came up with a plan that made the bully look bad and showed Teddy that he could stand up for himself without her.
Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work. The story “Battle Royal” by Ralph Ellison displays a few specific themes through the story which are easy to depict. A few themes from this story are, first racism and finding his self identity, then the danger of fighting stereotype with stereotype, and last blindness. These themes play an important role in the story to better help the reader understand it.
...s, demonstrated through the author's talent, are denouncing the authority figures who were supposed to guide his generation into adulthood but instead turned the youth against each other in the pursuit of superficial ideals. The soldiers were simply the victims of a meaningless war.
Thinking that the war was just an ideal character. Convincing the reader to believe the boys didn't know the risk they were taking by being in this war. They way the boys viewed it, shows that, true their are some hard times in wars, but their minds are young and they thought it was just another thing to talk about. When they should have been taking things more serious, but thinking about the good parts helped them to keep a hold on their sanity. "They ought to have been mediators and guides to the world of maturity, the world of work, of duty, of culture, of progress to the future", was the beliefs of the boys after their friend Behn dies. Their generation thought that the authorities were going to look after, and take care of them, the authorities were thought of real highly by them. Until their friend passed away, then everything changed. "We had to realize that our generation was more to be trusted than theirs", this is where they came to reality that, everybody was taking care of their selves, and didn't want anything to do with other peoples problems.
The Author throughout the story expresses a few main themes because he has been through war and had a negative experience with it. He tried to show you the negative aspects of it, and that there is no point of it. Throughout the book, by using expressions of the characters, he points about the gruesome psychological effects of war. Paul is very similar to the author since he too loathes the very existence of war, and sees no point of it. He even asks why there is war, and no one was able to give a proper answer to him. Because both of these people have experienced war, they unwillingly who it horrors compared whereas other who have never experienced was, glorify the moment.

The one positive point of this novel is how friends cared for one another when going through tragedies and stressful experiences. It also portrays how strong a soldier needs to be, in order for them to be in the war.
Psychological manipulation the Party uses on the citizens is one of the first themes Orwell exposes in this dystopian society. The Party maintains this manipulation by constantly overwhelming citizens with useless information and propaganda.
The power of manipulation is a very powerful tool and can easily be misused to benefit
As a highschool freshman it is hard to get comfortable in a new building, especially standing up against your high school. Arguably most freshman’s or maybe even none wouldn’t. But accordingly a character from the story The Chocolate War written by Robert Cormier goes by the name Jerry Renault stands up against his high school classmates and administrators. He stands up for doing stuff they did not want to do but were forced too. For instance, in the story Trinity High a all boys Catholic School, is forced every year to sell 50 boxes of chocolates for the school. Being administered by Brother Leon a teacher who now takes responsibility for the headmaster who had got ill. Brother Leon seems to proclaim the funds for the chocolates is for a good cause but Brother Leon wants to take over the Headmaster so to impress the board he forces kids to sells boxes of chocolates. This proves that Brother Leon is confirmed as a demagogue.
