According to Mahatma Gandhi, “Man is oftentimes weak-minded enough to be caught in the snare of greed and honeyed words.” Shakespeare's tragic play Macbeth depicts this sentiment through the story of a transformation that leads a man to create cruelty and despair throughout his country. The shift that leads once noble war hero Macbeth to become relentlessly cruel and greedy is in many parts due to his susceptibility to the influence from others. His wife, Lady Macbeth, coerces him to perform objectionable actions and the witches use deceit to make him reckless and ignorant. Upon the witches next meeting with Macbeth, they plan to reveal fabricated information in the form of visions that they alter in order to trifle with Macbeth. The visions display hidden riddles and half-truths that lead Macbeth to a false sense of security and invincibility. As a result of his newfound feelings of security and invisibility, he becomes reckless and is ultimately killed by Macduff. The witches display confusing visions with intent to manipulate Macbeth. Macbeth falls for their trickery and subsequently becomes arrogant and incautious, which leads him to actions with fatal punishments.
Both Lady Macbeth and the witches use manipulation to control Macbeth. Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth due to her appetence for power, while the witches manipulate him out of mischievousness and malice.
