The definition of manipulation is to control or influence a person or situation, cleverly or unfairly. The play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by William Shakespeare is partially set in the fairy forest where Oberon, king of the fairies, and Titania, queen of the fairies reside. Oberon has his servant Puck bring him a flower containing love juice and they put it on Titania. They also try to use the flower to fix the relationships of four Athenians who are wandering the woods. Oberon attempts to humiliate Titania by making her fall in love with something stupid. He will then use this to get what he wants from her. This manipulation is not a hallmark of a healthy relationship. Oberon is being extremely disrespectful by not honoring Titania’s wishes. Therefore, Shakespeare should not have promoted Oberon’s actions in a positive light, and they certainly should not have been seen as an acceptable way for Oberon to get what he wanted. Oberon and Titania’s relationship illustrates how manipulation can be used to blindside your partner, and actions like these signify an unhealthy relationship where one partner does not respect the other partner. In “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by William Shakespeare, Oberon and Titania’s relationship emphasizes that scheming against your partner’s wishes and embarrassing them is an acceptable way to achieve your goals. This could encourage toxicity and a lack of respect in relationships today in our world.
