Mandragora by David McRobbie "Mandragora" by David Mc Robbie is the story of parallel lives and how they connect through four cursed mandrake dolls. These dolls in particular have been around since 1886. According to "Mandragora", a ship called the Dunarling was not only carrying 85 passengers wanting to shift from Scotland to South Australia, but also the four dolls. Each named and cursed. 'Swith' was cursed with fire (bleeze), 'Agley' with mischance, 'Snell' with foulness and 'Sneddum' was cursed with the final destruction. Otherwise referred to as 'All fa' doon!' 100 years after the shipwreck of the Dunarling ship, two youngsters discovered the dolls. Adam Hardy and Catriona Chisholm. Along with them were the school bullies, Richard Vernon and Mike Carter. But they didn't seem to care much about the founding of Jamie Ramsay's cave. This was where the dolls were secretly hidden. Jeanne wanted to write this book to give details on her experience during World War II internment camps. “It is a story, or a web of stories my own, my father’s, my family’s -- tracing a few paths that led up to and away from the experience of the internment” (pg XI). In Under a Cruel Star, Heda Margolious Kovaly details the attractiveness and terror of Communism brought to Czechoslovakia following WWII. Kovaly’s accounts of how communism impacted Czechoslovakia are fascinating because they are accounts of a woman who was skeptical, but also seemed hopeful for communism’s success. Kovaly was not entirely pro-communism, nor was she entirely anti-communism during the Party’s takeover. By telling her accounts of being trapped in the Lodz Ghetto and the torture she faced in Auschwitz, Kovaly displays her terror experienced with a fascist regime and her need for change. Kovaly said that the people of Czechoslovakia welcomed communism because it provided them with the chance to make up for the passivity they had let occur during the German occupation. So far in the book the main character (narrator) remains anonymous to the reader, and refers to himself as the “Invisible Man”. According to himself, he believes he is invisible due to the fact that he has no place in society. Throughout the book he has been constantly rejected by everyone, his friends, fellow african americans, and the white americans who were “superior” at the time. However, besides his depressive feelings for himself, he isn’t as innocent as he portrays himself to be. The Invisible man is actually rather threatening than he is friendly, which feeds the reasoning why he is constantly rejected by everyone. David W. Blight's book Beyond the Battlefield: Race, Memory and the American Civil War, is an intriguing look back into the Civil War era which is very heavily studied but misunderstood according to Blight. Blight focuses on how memory shapes history Blight feels, while the Civil War accomplished it goal of abolishing slavery, it fell short of its ultimate potential to pave the way for equality. Blight attempts to prove that the Civil War does little to bring equality to blacks. This book is a composite of twelve essays which are spilt into three parts. The Preludes describe blacks during the era before the Civil War and their struggle to over come slavery and describes the causes, course and consequences of the war. Problems in Civil War memory describes black history and deals with how during and after the war Americans seemed to forget the true meaning of the war which was race. And the postludes describes some for the leaders of black society and how they are attempting to keep the memory and the real meaning of the Civil War alive and explains the purpose of studying historical memory.
Common sense seems to dictate that commercials just advertise products. But in reality, advertising is a multi-headed beast that targets specific genders, races, ages, etc. In “Men’s Men & Women’s Women”, author Steve Craig focuses on one head of the beast: gender. Craig suggests that, “Advertisers . . . portray different images to men and women in order to exploit the different deep seated motivations and anxieties connected to gender identity.” In other words, advertisers manipulate consumers’ fantasies to sell their product. In this essay, I will be analyzing four different commercials that focuses on appealing to specific genders.
This book is told from the diary of the main character, Sam Gribley. Sam is a boy full of determination. He didn’t give up and go home like everyone thought he would. He is strong of mind. After the first night in the freezing rain, with no fire and no food, he still went on. He is a born survivor. He lasted the winter, through storms, hunger, and loneliness, and came out on top even when everyone expected him to fail. “The land is no place for a Gribley” p. 9
Throughout the book the dolls hide behind someone else, as if they are a puppeteer controlling the citizens of Dunarling. Individually the four dolls are strong. However, when they stand together the dolls are near indestructible, this is represented through the quote, “Tam Dubh, thou art here but canst dae naught against the fower o’ us.” (McRobbie 1991, pg.223). Henrik Ibsen’s controversial and influential play, entitled HeddaGabler, is divided into four acts, and, as any good piece of literature ought to be, much of what would later on become crucial to the plot is introduced, hinted at, and foreshadowed in the first act. In this case, the character interactions are most significant, especially that of the titular protagonist, Hedda, whose ultimate destiny in the play is to be trapped in her own crafty machinations and manipulations. A close look on the actions and motivations of the characters in Act I reveal much about their innermost wishes, and considering the complications these desires face, the eventful and explosive conclusion could almost be seen from the first scenes of the play.
“Who is more to blame though either should do wrong? She who sins for pay or he who pays to sin?” Throughout “You Foolish Men” by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz the central question lies around who is to really blame for the suppression of women. De la Cruz attempts throughout her poem to portray men as ludicrous for their a double standard of women. However, De la Cruz blames human nature more than men for the suppression of women.
Simone de Beauvoir, the author of the novel The Second Sex, was a writer and a philosopher as well as a political activist and feminist. She was born in 1908 in Paris, France to an upper-middle class family. Although as a child Beauvoir was extremely religious, mostly due to training from her mother as well as from her education, at the age of fourteen she decided that there was no God, and remained an atheist until she died. While attending her postgraduate school she met Jean Paul Sartre who encouraged her to write a book. In 1949 she wrote her most popular book, The Second Sex. This book would become a powerful guide for modern feminism. Before writing this book de Beauvoir did not believe herself to be a feminist. Originally she believed that “women were largely responsible for much of their own situation”. Eventually her views changed and she began to believe that people were in fact products of their upbringing. Simone de Beauvoir died in Paris in 1986 at the age of 78.
The holocaust attested that morality is adaptable in severe conditions. Traditional morality stopped to be contained by the barbed wires of the concentration camps. Inside the camps, prisoners were not dealt like humans and thus adapted animal-like behavior needed to survive. The “ordinary moral world” (86) Primo Levi refers in his autobiographical novel Se questo è un uomo (If This Is a Man or Survival in Auschwitz), stops to exist; the meanings and applications of words such as “good,” “evil,” “just,” and “unjust” begin to merge and the differences between these opposites turn vague. Continued existence in Auschwitz demanded abolition of one’s self-respect and human dignity. Vulnerability to unending dehumanization certainly directs one to be dehumanized, thrusting one to resort on mental, physical, and social adaptation to be able to preserve one’s life and personality. It is in this adaptation that the line distinguishing right and wrong starts to deform.
