Plot Summary

Miles Pruitt is a thirty-five year old high school English teacher in the Staggerford, Minnesota. Throughout the book, Miles falls in love two times, but his choice to live life without taking any risks will quickly catch up with him.

There are many things throughout the book that seem to make it difficult for Miles to live without “getting wet.” He falls madly in love with the Bonewoman’s daughter, Beverly Bingham. There is one small problem: Beverly is one of Miles’ students. Wayne Workman, Miles’ boss, is extremely frustrated with them wreaking havoc during school. Along with all of the mishaps, Miles continues to attempt going through life without letting life touch him.

Staggerford has a unique setting that occurs over the course of one week. In the end, one learns that Miles will pay a price for running away from life.

Setting

This story takes place in the charming town of Staggerford, Minnesota. In the small town of Staggerford, there is a school, a diner, and the Sandhill Indian Reservation. Staggerford is the perfect town; idealist scenery and everyone appear to know each other.

Conflict

Miles Pruitt is the center of this story; he is going through life in attempt to avoid the hardships it throws at him. He has to cope with the misfortunes that come with love, and by the end of the story, Miles will finally come to realize that his decisions to go through life untouched will not pay off.

Climax

The climax of the story is when Miles is shot by the Bonewoman. The reader comes to realize that Miles’ choice to live life on the safe side was a mistake:

Miles opened his door and got out of the car. The Bonewoman, insane with fear, and resting her rat gun on the sill of the upstairs window, took aim and fired a .22 bullet that entered his skull an inch above the left eye. She had vowed to herself as she had watched the singing, chicken-killing soldiers drive away in their jeeps and trucks that she would murder the next man who set foot in her yard. Into the mud beside the yellow Mustang, Miles fell backward, dying. (Page 275)

Theme
