There are a few things motorcycle riders wear to protect themselves. They wear pants, bike gloves, boots that achieves their lower legs and coats. In any case, a motorcycles protective helmet is the most essential wellbeing gear a rider can wear. A motorcycles helmet is made out of an external shell, comfort cushioning, an effect engrossing liner and a maintenance framework. Every one of these parts cooperate to ensure the riders head in case of a crash. The risks of not wearing a protective helmet are self-evident. A helmet offers insurance from the climate. For example, a head protector has a visor that decreases the glare from the sun. Not exclusively does it help diminish the glare, it shields your eyes from debris like rocks, rock, twigs …show more content…
The first argument brought up is that this would infringe up on the civil liberties of riders and their right to accept the risks of riding without a helmet. Motorcycles in a way represent freedom to the motorcyclist. The freedom to feel their hair blow in the wind and all the elements on their face. When you put on a helmet, they lose that feeling of flexibility. The second argument against helmets is that they actually pose a safety risk. A helmet dramatically diminishes the range of hearing/vision for a rider. The weight and the shape of the helmet alone contributes to severe neck injuries during an …show more content…
I have witnessed the injuries and losses of family and friends that have been involved in a motorcycle accident. Last year, I received a text from a good friend of mine. He told me he was in the hospital. He had just received a new motorcycle months before. Eager to test it out, he took a turn going 80 miles per hour. Unexpectedly, a curve appeared. He went flying off the road, straight into a tree. He had been riding with a friend. My friend blacked out on impact, but after the fact, his friend told him he was positive he had died based on the sound he made when he hit that tree. My friend survived but to this day, he hasn’t regained his physical ability. When I asked him what he thought about helmet laws in Michigan, he said only an idiot would ride without their helmet, and that if he hadn’t wore his helmet, he would be dead for sure. He’s grateful for being
Wearing headgear has many positives, reducing injuries is the most obvious one and it could be argued that its help reduces the chance of injuries and even death. At an elite level, Chelsea goalkeeper, Petr Cech is convinced that wearing headgear saved him from suffering extended injuries after colliding with Fulham striker Orlando Sa back in September 2011. Headgear offers a form of padding when worn. It allows juniors and elite athlete’s the reduced chance of head wounds. By this it means it allows for less “cracked skulls”, scars, wounds and so on. It gives a stronger protection on the softer part of the skull which is more prone to damage...
The first thing that one needs to consider is the situation that victims are normally under. No one chooses to be in an accident, it is something that is unexpected. Because of that those who are affected are often not at a point financially where they can handle the results of the accident such as lost time at work, medical bills, and other associated cost. Worsening the situation is the fact that the injuring party in the accident often does not want to compensate the victims for their actions. This results in an even
About 4 years ago Johnathan was in a tragic car accident due to drinking and driving. He fell asleep at the wheel and drove his car underneath a parked 18 wheeler on the side of the highway. Johnathan not only put himself in danger, but also a friend of his that was passed out in the backseat. This caused Johnathan to have to have massive facial reconstructive surgery. Johnathan’s friend suffered minor injuries since he was lying down.
At Ten P.m on September 23, 2006, my mother Kelli Elizabeth Dicks was hit by a car on Route 146 southbound trying to cross the high speed lane. She was being picked up by a friend. Instead of taking the exit and coming to the other side of the highway, her ride suggested she run across the street. The impact of the car caused her to be thrown 87 feet away from the original impact zone and land in a grassy patch of land, her shoes stayed where she was hit. She was immediately rushed to Rhode Island Hospital where she was treated for serious injuries. When she arrived at the hospital she was rushed into the operating room for an emergency surgery. The amount of injuries she sustained were unbelievable. She broke 18 different bones, lacerated her liver and her spleen, ruptured her bladder, and she collapsed both lungs. When she went in for her emergency operation, and had her
For children in this group, a helmet can save you or reduce the severity of the damage via 53%. The same studies, cited using the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, show a forty-four% prevention and reduction in injury among adults.
Millions of people all over the United States choose motorcycles over automobiles for the thrill, speed, and high performance capabilities. On the other hand, motorcycles are not at all the safest way of transportation. Motorcycles do not provide the passenger with the outer protection that cars provide, therefore, when one crashes, the results are usually much more serious. Injuries to the head are responsible for 76% of fatalities when dealing with motorcycle crashes many of which could have been prevented had the rider been wearing a helmet. For this reason, many states have adopted the motorcycle helmet law. The law states that every passengers must wear a helmet at all times when riding on a motorcycle. This law has created a great deal of controversy. One side supports the law, believing that it protects motorcyclists from danger and saves the economy a great deal of money. The other side argues that the law is unconstitutional and it violates our right to freedom. However, statistics show overwhelming support in favor of the motorcycle helmet law. Although wearing helmets cannot prevent motorcycle crashes, they can greatly reduce the number of deaths caused by head injury as well as lowering taxes, insurance rates, and health care costs. Therefore, the helmet law should be put into effect in every state across the United States.
While the use of helmets does aid in protecting players from brain trauma, they also increase the risky behavior of players; this is called risk compensation. Risk compensation is the adjustment of individual behavior, responding to the perceived changes in risk (TheFreeDictionary.com). Most people that wear helmets have a pre-conceived idea that, because they have a helmet on, they can possess more daring behaviors and be fine. The helmet is basically thought of as a tool to hit harder, or improve performance in today’s culture. Adventure writer and pilot, Lane Wallace (2011) accurately understands the dangers of helmets being used incorrectly, and how they are used as weapons instead of safety. Wallace also theorizes like the NFL, a change in football culture and of viewpoints towards helmets would vastly reduce trauma to the
Imagine sitting in a car with your good old pops. All of a sudden you look over and see he has blacked out, and is heading straight into another car. Now your pops is seriously injured ,and the people that were hit are in serious conditions. He is now depressed about what he has done and his health is plummeting. The entire family is stressed ,and now everyone’s lives are suffering. Do you wish you could’ve prevented this? I hope you said yes. If you said no, contact the nearest mental hospital near you! If there was yearly driving test and physical test this whole situation would have never happened. Sadly these situations have happened thousand maybe even million of times. We need to do something to prevent these things that happen. We
Whether it’s a concussions or a hematoma, athletes should be wearing the proper gear. This gear will help prevent further injuries and may save their life. For anything facial related such as eye laserations, hyphema, or any oral injury, protective face guards should be used. Face masks/guards and mouth guards will help protect the face. To protect from head injuries, proper helmets should be worn.
Should bicycle helmets be made mandatory for all cyclist? That is what two elementary students asked for from their city council, an ordinance enforcing the use of Bicycle Safety helmets for children under 12. So on April 25, 2002, in Richardson, Texas, the city council had decided against an ordinance requiring bicycle helmets for children under 12. Of course they had their reasons for not passing the request made by two young girls. If they would have taken a serious look at the issue, they may have viewed it differently.
Have you ever known somebody who was injured in a car accident? What do you think his attitude about seat belts was after they saved his life? If you knew that a seat belt would save your life, you would buckle up! It took years of legislation and public awareness campaigns to make seat belt use mandatory. Now a new topic regarding public safety is coming to light: people are dying or becoming seriously injured in seemingly minor accidents on bicycles when the rider's head strikes the concrete. When the head is unprotected "the brain continues to move in a forward motion while the skull stops moving" (Macyko1), causing trauma. What is needed is a way to protect the brain "by absorbing the energy from the impact, buying extra time for the brain to slow down" (Macyko1). Bicycle riders need to wear helmets to protect their brains from injury, yet unfortunately the public is simply not aware of this need and many people will continue to die or be seriously injured unless something is done. Bicycle helmets save lives and should be required by Arizona State law for riders of all ages.
1. Studies have shown that wearing a helmet can reduce your chances of head injury by 85%
This topic is a constant and heated debate among people. Many people argue that the rider should have the freedom to choose whether or not to wear a helmet. Although, many people feel this is a selfish perspective because when others have accidents, it becomes other people’s concerns. This is said because some people believe that the families, loved ones, or tax payers will be paying for the rider’s injury bills. Along with freedom rights, riders complain that the helmets are heavy. With the weight of the helmet, arguments are made that injuries could increase with the spinal cord or neck. Likewise, people think that helmets can become a distraction or “get in the way”. When riders say this, they are referring to their ability to see or hear what is going on in the environment. “These senses have been studied in the context of motorcycle activity and do not appear to be impaired, and in certain circumstances, may be improved” (Auerbach). Research has been shown that helmets do not cause distractions or impair hearing or vision
People ride bicycles for various reasons. Some people ride bicycles for sport, fitness purposes, as a mode of transportation, fun activity, and some people ride bikes to simply relax and clear their mind after a long day. Regardless of the reason you ride, it is important to know the factors that contribute to bicycle and helmet safety. A study in 2014 shows that 103.7 million people rode a bike that year and 34 percent of Americans age three or older rode a bike at least once in that year (“Study: 103.7 Million Americans Ride Bikes”). The importance of bicycle safety cannot be underestimated. According to the 2008 Alabama Traffic Crash Facts, there were 182 bicycle crash injuries and four fatalities. In 2008, children 14 years old and under
Helmets are used to protect the head from falling objects or hot embers. Helmets started out as nothing more than a leather hard hat made for construction which doesn’t provide much protection or safety for the people
