“Hey, girl,” Malani shouts as she walks toward her best friend, April, who is at her locker. Malani has always had long black curly hair that came past her shoulders. Her skin was as clear as the sky. Malani also thought that she was better than everybody because she had rich parents. However, April was the opposite of her best friend, Malani. What are you mad about today?” “Brandon still did not ask me to the prom and it is in two days,” Malani said with her head looking like it is going to explode. “Maybe he wants to surprise you with a huge proposal,” April replies, trying to make her best friend feel better. Jacob just nods and drives off. Malani decides to call her parents, but before she could get her phone out she is knocked out by the force of a baseball bat. “Um…where am I?” Two shadowy, dark figures are standing in front of Malani with masks and a baseball bat that struck her in the head like lightning. Malani could see clearly that she was tied up to a chair with bombs wrapped around her body with a ticking timer. The timer had only twenty minutes left. “ What the…,” Malani screamed with her face full of shock. She did not know what to do. “ Let me out,” she shouted, “ do you want my money or what,” Malani exclaims in fear. The two kidnappers stay there and do not say anything, they stay as quiet as mice. They both exit the room. Malani notices that her bag is right beside her. She tries to tilt her chair to reach her phone. She reaches a little farther and gets it. She does not want her parents to know about this incident. Malani breaks the tape around her hand to use her phone. She scrolls through her contacts and sees “Brandon”. She is filled with fury. As she scrolls down, she sees “Jacob.” She sends Jacob a picture of where she is and texts him, saying “please help.” When Jacob receives the message, he notices what building it is. Ten minutes later, Jacob creeps through the window, trying to save Malani. “Please hurry, the timer is ticking,” Malani whispered, looking at the bomb timer. Jacob
With the exception of some small problems with Sarah’s strong will, MacLachlan makes the relationship between Sarah and Jacob seem easy. However in the movie, Jacob also has a hard time letting Sarah get close to him because of his love for his dead wife, Katherine. For example, in the movie when they fight about putting Katherine’s possessions in the house and going to visit the grave Sarah says “I cannot make a difference until you make peace with Katherine’s death”. Jacob does not make that peace until Sarah goes to help Maggie deliver her baby. The delivery brings back memories of Katherine’s death since she died giving birth to Caleb. It is here that Jacob realizes “I never stopped long enough to tell her that I missed her”. Once Jacob realizes this he has room to love Sarah.

Now I wished that I could pen a letter to my school to be read at the opening assembly that would tell them how wrong we had all been. You should see Zachary Taylor, I’d say.” Lily is realizing now that beauty comes in all colors. Sarah and her mother are sought out by the French Police after an order goes out to arrest all French Jews. When Sarah’s little brother starts to feel the pressures of social injustice, he turns to his sister for guidance. Michel did not want to go with the French Police, so he asks Sarah to help him hide in their secret cupboard. Sarah does this because she loves Michel and does not want him to be discriminated against. Sarah, her mother, and her father get arrested for being Jewish and are taken to a concentration camp just outside their hometown. Sarah thinks Michel, her beloved brother, will be safe. She says, “Yes, he’d be safe there. She was sure of it. The girl murmured his name and laid her palm flat on the wooden panel. I’ll come back for you later. I promise” (Rosnay 9). During this time of inequality, where the French were removing Sarah and her mother just because they were Jewish, Sarah’s brother asked her for help. Sarah promised her brother she would be back for him and helped him escape his impending arrest. Sarah’s brother believed her because he looks up to her and loves her. As the story continues, when Sarah falls ill and is in pain, she also turns to her father for comfort, “at one point she had been sick, bringing up bile, moaning in pain. She had felt her father’s hand upon her, comforting her” (Rosnay 55).
Looking out across the stone-paved road, she watched the neighborhood inside the coffee colored fence. It was very similar to hers, containing multiple cookie-cutter homes and an assortment of businesses, except no one was there was her color and no one in her neighborhood was their color. All of them had chocolate skin with eyes and hair that were all equally dark. Across the road to her right, a yellow fence contained honey colored people. She enjoyed seeing all the little, squinted almond eyes, much smaller then her own, which were wide set and round. One little, sunshine colored boy with dark straight hair raised his arm and waved his hand, but before she could do the same back her father called her into the house. His lips were pressed and his body was rigid, the blue of his eyes making direct contact with her
