Make A Wish Foundation By Taj Atkinson
Have you ever thought about making a wish or actually made a wish, now think about this wish and what it took to make this happen. This passed Thursday on October 5th, I was given the wonderful opportunity to sit down with Olivia Cafaro, head of Make A Wish Foundation’s Management Team, and she had much to share about the organization. She spoke about Make A Wish’s history, insurance to better children’s health, and even the organization going international to achieve their mission of making wishes come true.
The Make A Wish Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in the United States that arranges experiences described as a wish to children with life threatening medical conditions. I approached

The head of the management team took time to share that the first person ever to be granted a wish was by the name of Frank “Bopsy” Salazar. He was the age of 7 with Leukemia. He had three wishes and was granted all three! Frank asked to be a fireman, go to Disney Land, and ride in a hot air balloon. I was curious how many wishes are granted total a year and Olivia had much to share. One hundred eighty-five wishes were granted last year to the children in Utah. Also, this charity hosts additional wishes in other states. Nationally M.O.W. has granted 285,000 wishes and a wish is granted every 34 …show more content…
In 2015 John Cena had granted over 500 wishes. Turning his wrestling logo “Never Give Up,” into a campaign for ill children. He raised over 1 million dollars for Make A Wish. A young boy named Sam had neuroblastoma a cancer that effects the nervous system. He always wanted to play baseball but never could physically handle it. The community came together and built him a baseball field and put together two teams just so he could for one day. Over 400 people came out to support. This was one of our top 10 events ever! I was fascinated to discover in New Jersey there was a Make a Wish Walk in this past September. In July 2017, Cake Boss raised 25,000 dollars for the program. And Mikes Jersey Subs raised over 263,000 for
David Ortiz has saved the lives of hundreds of children by giving them medical care they would not otherwise have access to through his charity, the David Ortiz Children’s Fund. In February of 2005, he visited CEDIMAT hospital in the Dominican Republic, where he saw children suffering after they had heart surgery. He instantly donated two hundred thousand dollars to the hospital. Ortiz started his charity because he wants to give children everywhere the opportunity to live long, happy lives (DavidOrtiz.com). He makes sure that kids who need urgent care receive it as soon as possible. In the first year alone, sixty kids were given open-heart surgery (DavidOrtiz.com). With his aid, kids who cannot afford or do not have access t...
Many of the named above stores, as well as many others sell paper balloons for one dollar giving the donor the opportunity give a small amount of money to CMN and in return they sign their names on the paper balloon and it is hung in the location of purchase, so that they are recognized for their contributions. CMN not only succeeds though their donations from the public but they also succeed though their efforts to raise awareness of childhood illnesses and
During my first year of medical school, I brought a new student organization to my campus called Love Your Melon. Love Your Melon is a company that was started by two college students in Minnesota with the initial mission to give every child battling cancer a beanie. Bringing this organization to my school allowed me to raise awareness for childhood cancer, as well as carry out events for local children battling cancer. One child in particular was a 16-year-old girl diagnosed with brain cancer. As an organization, we were able to provide her a day doing all of the activities that she loved instead of focusing on her disease.
Have you ever had a dream or a wish? Have you ever wanted to go somewhere but you're too sick, too tired, and you don't have enough money and you had already lived your life? Donate to the Make-A-Wish-Foundation, they help every kid make their dream come true! If you donate you won't just make the kids happy, you would make yourself happy! I believe this is the best charity to donate to. A little kid from Make-A-Wish-Foundation one time said “Just wanted to say thanks for putting a twinkle back into little shining stars. Your hard work brightens lives!” -Terri.
One of these causes, the Miracle League of the South Hills is particularly close to my heart. A friend of my mother has a child who is severely autistic, and all my life my family and I have volunteered for many organizations to help special needs children, of all of these Miracle League has left the greatest impression on me. Ghandi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others,” and that is exactly what has happened to me during my long term association with the Miracle League. I truly believe my association with this organization has helped me to become a better person, more kind, caring, outgoing, and energetic. Miracle League was founded on the belief that, “Every child deserves a chance to play baseball.” Miracle League operates specially designed fields on which they bring the game of baseball to children who may have never had the opportunity to play on a real field. I volunteer with the Miracle League Buddy program. The Buddy Program pairs volunteers with a Miracle League player to help the player The buddy is there to protect the player from balls, assist the player in batting and running the bases, and to be a friend on and off the field. I began volunteering as a buddy in 2012, and in 2014 I became a Buddy Organizer for my team, the Tigers. As Buddy Organizer I do exactly what it sounds like, I am in charge of pairing up players with a
In one instance Newton heard that a ten-year-old with cancer was having a Halloween party. So, Newton decided to rent an ice cream truck and drove it to the party. Elijah Hughes had a night that he would never forget. About the surprise he said, “I didn’t believe it at first, I thought I was dreaming. It means a lot that he would come out to see me at my party.” This is just one example of the many wishes that Newton has granted. Newton says, “These kids are my inspiration, its why I do what I do. If I can do something little that has a big impact on someone that needs it, I won’t think twice about it.” Newton has built up a reputation of giving back and helping kids all across
But, to say that all Derek Jeter did was play baseball and win championships is an understatement. Jeter also helped the community as well, creating his own foundation, titled The Turn 2 Foundation, to help children avoid becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol and instead focusing in on a healthy lifestyle. Since the creation, the Turn 2 Foundation has raised over eighteen million dollars for projects in New York City and Tampa, Florida. Jeter has granted many wishes for The Make a Wish Foundation, a foundation that grants wishes to children who have gone through battles with diseases such as
Imagine being stuck with an illness, or having a loved one with an illness that defined you and your family's future. Every year an estimated 250,000 children are affected with some form of cancer. Despite these facts, cancer research programs are extremely underfunded and Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation has helped with the heartbreaking reality. Alex's Lemonade Stand is a supportive organization that funds cancer research and helps families financially during this devastating times. Their goals are driven by the need to find a cure. Alex’s Lemonade Stand should most definitely be supported because too many people are struggling, there is a lack of a cure, and all profits go directly to their
Hello, my name is Vanessa Mercado and I am an advocate for the DREAM act. Many high school graduates in the United States come from immigrant families are not able to go to college, serve in the military, find a job, or pursue the American dream. This is because of the label passed on to them called “Illegal immigrant”. These children were brought to the United States illicitly at a young age. Most of these children have lived in the United States for most of their lives and consider this nation as their home. Our country has been having issues with the massive amount of illegal immigrants residing and employed in the United States.
Imagine a kid that doesn't know what it's like to have fun because of a illness well The make a Wish Foundation helps those kids have fun. If I had 10 million dollars to donate to a nonprofit organization, then I would give it to Make a Wish Foundation because it helps kids with illnesses by making their wishes come true, making their lives better, and by making the kids last few years or months easier by knowing that their favorite sport player or musician are praying for him/her. these are the reason why I would donate to Make a Wish Foundation.
Having a wish fulfilled is a desire everyone keeps, but granting one is a special characteristic of a chosen few. Such is the ideology of the Make a wish foundation. This simple, but powerful belief is what drives the Make-A-Wish foundation. For children who must face the uncertainty of a tomorrow, due to their rapidly deteriorating health, a wish is more than just a desire. It’s a hope. Hope is what carries us out of the darkest of slums, to keep going. To face a tomorrow. Make-A-Wish is committed to granting the wish of every eligible child. They do this believing that wishes can make sick children feel better, and sometimes, when they feel better, they get better. Since the spring of 1980, they have been granting the wishes of children diagnosed with a life-threatening medical conditions. The make a wish foundation has the ability to not only unite a society as whole and further the awareness of life threatening illnesses, but also gives hope to individuals and a community as a whole.
News spread of Alexandra and that she was dedicated to helping other sick children. People from all over the world held their own lemonade stands and donated the money they made to Alex and her family. This helped the foundation reach a goal of $1 million dollars raised to help children battling cancer.
Later in the year, Blake was notified that he was chosen as a recipient for one of the Make A Wish Foundation wishes. By then he knew he had a life-threatening illness, and that his wish -a trip to Disney World- may be one of his final memories with his family. He was so enthusiastic to fly on an airplane as he headed to Disney World with his mom, sister, and grandparents. It would be his first time flying. The entire week he was gone, I had to discover other ways to entertain myself. There were numerous occasions I was itching to tell him about.
This hospital focuses on helping children, in particular, children who have cancer or any other life-threatening diseases. “The mission is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay” (St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 2017). These children are constantly attached to an IV in the hospital, unlike other children who don’t have any life-threating diseases. These children are unable to enjoy their childhood they way the other children do. This is the reason why we decided to a do a toy drive so with just the little bit of happiness they get when they receive these toys, can help distracted them to where they are and the pain they are going
