As a famous quote by Doug Floyd: You don’t get harmony when everybody sings the same note. This clearly shows that every individual has to play their own role in the society to unite the nation. Looking around the globe, we have numerous of countries of different ethnicity and tradition. Malaysia is the land of multilingual, multiracial, multicultural and multi-religious societies. However we still live in harmony without any conflicts and bloodshed. For example, Malaysia is a nation well-known for the diversity of its people. The people live together in peace under one nation despite the differences of religion, culture, language and more. In this case, it is proven that harmony in diversity is an essential ingredient to create a scrumptious …show more content…
Without unity, sovereignty and independence of the country will be lost in a blink of eyes. One of the initiatives in maintaining harmony in a multiracial society is depending on an individual's attitude. This is because the prosperity of a community generally depends on the individual. Each individual should tolerates and respects each other in order to nourish harmony within the society. Every citizen must inculcates moral values in their daily lives. With the pure-practitioner attitude within the community in Malaysia, the life of multi-racial society will always in peace and harmony. For example, we can held an open house to celebrate festivals like Chinese New Year. We should not chase away a neighbor even though they are not of the same religion. We should invite more friends and family to celebrate the festival together without taking the consideration of the differences and …show more content…
Similarly, unity lessens hostility, hatred, conflict, mistrust, destruction and ruins; rather it consolidates cooperation, trust, brotherhood, friendship and so on. If people are united, they certainly contribute to the development of the country because of the spirit of patriotism; and they can intensify their steps for the advancement of the country. If they are aptly united, they enhance the spirit of 'We', but not 'I'. This builds up and boosts up the rights and freedom of the people. It won't be exaggeration to say that harmony within diversity absolutely intensifies human prosperity. As a first step in cherishing harmony, people should mingle and promote understanding between races. In that case, parents should always apply the values of solidarity in their kids since tender age. Children are encouraged to communicate with neighbors of different races and parents are also encouraged to bring their children to a neighbor's house during the holiday or celebration. In that way, parents can be the role models to their children and enable them to appreciate the privilege of Malaysian society comprising various races and
With America being as diverse as it is, people would think everyone is united, but is that completely true? Thomas Paine shows his view of America as being a harmonious country with no problems. Even though over the years America has become a lot more diverse, that does not signify, all of the sudden, we have become a problem-free nation, comparable to what Thomas Paine thinks. Every nation has difficulties, and that includes America. America is nowhere close to being a perfect nation, but some nations have a lot more conflicts than America; and we have been trying, over the years, to become closer as a stronger country. Even with diversity growing in America, supporting Paine's argument, the United States is not a complete, harmonious nation,
Embracing your diversity, or the presence of it, creates unity in America because so many different cultures are present. Eric Liu from The Washington Post supports this notion with a statement taken out of one of his articles, “The world is white no longer and will never be white again.” This quote shows that the culture of America has been blended so much that there is no singular race’s culture that is dominant. “Only when I was able to think of myself as an American, no longer an alien in gringo society, could I seek the rights and opportunities necessary for public individuality.” As soon as he embraced that he could be an individual but still flow with everyone he discovered unity between him and all
Despite what one might see on television and what conglomerates may want people to believe, the roots of multiculturalism and multiracialism are in shallow soil. Change does not come by commercial hype, but rather by an evolving process of change in thoughts, ideas and in the racial equation.
“Multiculturalism is sometimes used to describe a condition of society; more precisely, it to describe a society where a variety of different cultures coexist” (Internet). In simpler terms, it is the feeling of being attached to more than one culture. Multiculturalism can have a positive role in society. A positive
Achieving unity within a country is the most fundamental and central goal of a nation. In order for a county to unite, they must first achieve unification in what values they hold to be important. They also need to be in accordance with one another as to how the country works and how they wish to be governed. These factors help create a region's identity and make it different from areas around it. It is a goal most difficult to accomplish due to the discrepancies between cultures, religions, personal beliefs and many other factors that may exist in that area.
Today in Canada it is not uncommon to see people of various races, ethnic backgrounds or cultural groups living within a mutual society; commonly known as multiculturalism. Multiculturalism refers to the presence of, or support for the presence of several distinct cultural or ethnic groups within a society. As the topic becomes more more popular due to news events and social media debates, multiculturalism gets twisted and misunderstood. In essence, multiculturalism is not about dwelling on about our differences, it is about emphasizing our commonality. Diversity of the human race has the power to unify society and make it stronger. Firstly, innovation
In its simplest definitions, the concept of multiculturalism having its roots in theories of cultural pluralism and diversity, can be defined as a normative response to manage the challenges arising from the ever growing multicultural make up of urban population caused by immigration or de facto plurality of cultures in both plural and mono cultural societies. The challenges of multicultural urban societies have been attributed to the politics of cultural differences characterized by the difference in value system of dominant mono cultural groups and specific communities containing multiple ethnicities and, also finding possible ways to co-exist among such differences. The politics of difference is largely reflected in sharing and constitution
What is harmony? It is a sense of tranquility and peacefulness that describes the relationship of how multiple distinctive parties come to terms with each other. So simple, yet it is mind-boggling how exceedingly difficult and intricate it is to achieve. Therefore, harmony within diversity must be nurtured and cherished. How so? Perhaps some would indeed disagree with this ideology, so let’s take a brief visit to the past.
Multiculturalism has become a way for nations to implement foreigners into their lives; however, Malik believes that countries are taking
Lastly, but most importantly, understanding the culture and its background provides a valuable insight and an ‘umbrella theme’ of a country. According to Geert Hofstede’s Cultural dimensions, Malaysia has one of the highest power distance index in the world, with one of the lowest uncertainty avoidance index. It is highly related to the beliefs of Islam and this creates a society where leaders have virtually ultimate power and authority, and the rules, laws, and regulations developed by those in power, reinforce their own leadership and control. It is not unusual for new leadership to arise from armed insurrection – the ultimate power, rather than from diplomatic or democratic change .

The greatest example of multiculturalism today is the world of electronic dance music festivals, and music festivals in general. These large festivals attract crowds well over 100,000 attendees, many of which are from all different types of backgrounds. For example, Electronic Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, Nevada which is held annually every June, attracts hundreds of thousands of individuals all coming together to celebrate their love of dance music. At Electronic Daisy Carnival or EDC as it is known, no judgments are passed on people for any reason such as race, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, or age. Everyone that attends is treated with love and respect. Many people who attend these festivals have a motto that they base their actions on known as P.L.U.R. which stands for peace, love, unity, and respect. You treat others with love kindness and respect in order to have unity, not many other places or events can boast that this type of interaction amongst individuals can be achieved. At EDC everyone is treated as equals, no one group who feels that they are better than another group for any reason. Unfortunately, in other aspects of our society there is an emphasis on seeing the differences in one another, which divides people instead of bringing them closer to help achieve a multicultural world. The unfortunate
To live a happy life with understanding and ease with others, there are some components that are crucial to achieve that quality of life, and civility is one of those important ones because it makes our manners better and our relationships good which eventually lead to making our lives better. If we are happy with our live, we would definitely impact other people’s lives positively, and it would for sure pay off really well for them. So when we learn civility that prevents the possibility of cross-cultural misunderstanding and conflict. So by Forni’s rules of choosing civility we have a guide to treat others nicely; thus, our manners and social interactions improve. So I agree with P.M. Forni's argument in his book choosing civility "to learn how to be happy we must learn how to live well with others, and civility is a key of that". Forni.p 14
Often, in today’s society, the news that we see being broadcast or articles we read in the newspapers are about discord and war. Harmony is said to be a synonym of peace and people living in racial or religious tolerance of one another. This notion of harmony, in today’s world of war and discord, is often a rare phenomenon. Newsmakers today often work for profit, rather than to promote harmony. This often prompts newsmakers to report about discord and injustices, as such news are more appealing to the public, for news about harmony is often viewed as bland and overrated.
