Mahatma Gandhi believed in a system of non-violence, or ahimsa, that “could change and heal situations of conflict and human nature itself” (xxxi). He believed that there was a need for “radical transformations in human lives, relationships, and organizations… and the interconnectedness of these” (xxvi). Gandhi “recognized the need to create a social environment in which this sort of disciplined personal life and consequent transformed personal relationships could flourish,” (xxvii) which sparked the idea of ashram communities where people shared a vision of “authentic human life and the disciplines which enabled it” (xxvii). Many of these aspects are outlined in Gandhi’s plan for non-violence in everyday life. The Constructive Programme calls for “complete independence by truthful and non-violent means” (164). The first step towards this goal is communal agreement, in which everyone must “cultivate personal friendship with persons representing faiths other than his own. He should have the same regard for the other faiths as he has for his own” (165, 166). Gandhi believed that “power resides in the people, and it is entrusted for the time being to those whom they may choose as their representatives” (166). As long as there is unity between castes, religions, and gender within a society, there will be effectiveness. “Parliaments have no power or even existence independently of the people” (166). Hand-in-hand with communal unity is the removal of untouchability, which “is part of the task of building the edifice of swaraj,” (167) or self-rule, and economic equality, which is “the master-key to non-violent independence” (176). The success of the community depends on the help of its neighbors; therefore, all must be treated as equal contributors. In order for individuals to remain non-violent and make the most effective contributions, it is key that men and women do not labor “under the curse of intoxicants and narcotics” (167). He was taught that everyone and everything is holy. He married at the custom age of 19 and went to London to study law. The thing that helped Gandhi promote nonviolence is that he worked his entire life saying that violence didn’t change the way people acted. He lived his life saying that an eye for an eye only made the whole world blind. Gandhi’s nonviolent movement worked because he had something to prove and everyone else in the world agreed with him.

In our country, Dr. Martin Luther King embraced the tenets of non-violence in his leadership within the Civil Rights Movement and enduring philosophy for bringing about social change. Dr. King wrote about those who inspired his philosophy of nonviolent social change and Gandhi was a significant influence. According to Pal, Dr. King took a month-long trip to India in 1959 to visit the country of his inspiration. The King Center is dedicated to preserving his legacy and providing support for social change. Based on Dr. King's teachings, The King Center published, “Six Steps of Nonviolent Social Change”. These six steps are: information gathering, education, personal commitment, negotiation, direct action, and reconciliation.

They are graced throughout history books, not only for their commendable actions but for their effective manner of inducing change around the world. Mohandas K. Gandhi, a great Indian philosopher, wrote the essay “My Faith in Nonviolence”. His essay focuses on the use of nonviolence means on overthrowing the British rule of India. Gandhi’s main claim on this essay is that love is the higher law of life and that “every problem lends itself to solution” (p. 203) , if we followed that law.
There is a considerable debate about the precise meaning of nonviolence. Some people believe that nonviolence is a philosophy and strategy for social change that rejects the use of violence. In other words, nonviolence is a method for resolving a conflict without the use of physical power nor enmity towards opponents. Instead, it emphasizes you to look beyond convictions and one’s urge for victory, it is the motto behind the saying “hate the sin and not the sinner”. For others it is a way of living and an essential part of their values and norms, for those people, nonviolence is the road which will lead them towards attaining inner piece and moral satisfaction. “Learn and teach nonviolence as a way of life; reflect it in attitude, speech and action” say’s Gerber in his article The Road to Nonviolence. Thus making nonviolence the ultimate behavior towards achieving truthful, spiritual, loving life. Then they fight you. Then you win” (Mahatma). Gandhi has a remarkable sagacity at a young age and strengthened it throughout the succession of his life. Although the aforementioned quote merely previews the extent of his intellect, it effectively summarizes his political approach. After becoming a member of the Indian National Congress Gandhi had the potential to become a most influential leader for the Indian people, and he did. Gandhi committed his political title towards fighting against the unlawful oppression of British rule. His method of fighting, however, was a politically innovative, mental type of fight. As a firm believer in the value of Pacifism, Gandhi developed the theory of non-violent civil protest and vowed to prevent his followers from succumbing to the allure of bloodshed. The irenic nature of Gandhi’s leadership won him the admiration of many Indian people, and is now considered to have political genius prestigious enough to be studied today (Mahatma 2). In some instances, studying Gandhi’s political strategy demonstrates the benefits of an actively participating governed majority. Mahatma Gandhi's Influence and Ideas Mahatma Gandhi was a man of faith and great conviction. He was born into an average Hindu family in India. Like most teenagers he had a rebellious stage when he smoked, spent time with girls and ate meat (forbidden to strict Hindus). The young Gandhi changed as a person while earning a living as a lawyer in South Africa. He came in contact with the apartheid and the future Mahatma began to emerge, one who championed the truth through non-violent resistance.
This elusive term is the core of Gandhi’s argument against embracing the English life of ‘civilized’ convenience and luxury, and marks a note worthy distinction between Gandhi’s version of Indian society and that of the West. For Gandhi, swaraj means individual discipline, restraint from passion and indulgence and acceptance of responsibility. He does not simply seek to apply swaraj on an individual level; he means for the concept to be accepted by India as a nation. In solidifying this point, he describes modern civilization of the West as corrupt; it is without strength, for no outdoor labor is performed, without order for her Parliament is weak and ineffectual, and without spirit, for bodily welfare is the object of the English civilized life. Therefore, Gandhi declares, England should not be accepted as a model of government or life style, but be replaced by pride in Indian tradition and spirit.
Conflict and violence is around us throughout the world and the mass media has made a huge impact of what we think of violence and the relation to religion, especially in the last couple of years. In addition violence has been considered as being part of human nature and comes from our biological structure of aggression. It is an out let for us to relieve stress levels and some believe that it can be a device of vengeance and a positive mechanism to human survival. For example it is a system for the survival of the fittest and reproduction. Another way that we can look at it on a different spectrum is the way religious beliefs utilise non violent mechanisms that try to diminish the impacts of aggressive behaviour. When we think of religion and violence we do not think to situate them together. This is because “theologically, it can certainly be concluded that all religions have the goal of peace” . People who are outsider of a religious tradition can make many generalisations. In this essay it will discuss why some religious traditions in South East Asia oppose violence. In addition the rejections of violence have shaped and changed religious practices within Jainism, Hinduism and Buddhism. There have also been many generalisations about the above traditions. Moreover I will try and answer why non violence has become a generalisation and how it has impacted India as a whole.
It is therefore, passive violence that fuels the dire of physical violence, which means if it is our intention to put out the fire of physical violence and create peace we need to cut off the supply of fuel that ignites the fire. This is why Gandhi said, “ we must become the change we wish to see in the world.” Gandhi’s work in nonviolence was comprehensive and not simply confined to politics or human rights. He is also known as Mahatma which means “The Great Soul”.
