I think the main inspiration for the first Macy’s parade in 1924 was actually a combination of both wanting to celebrate the holidays by bringing families together for a great show as well as wanting to increase sales. From what I have read on the parade’s history, Macy’s had just opened the largest store ever built. They wanted to spark interest in holiday shopping and decided the parade would be a great way to provide entertainment for families as well as showcase the displays created by Anthony Frederick Sarg. It worked. The parade was extremely successful in attendance and resulted in increased business for Macys. They did not charge admission to the parade in 1924, so I think they were trying to include all families in the city. Today,
