“Same Love” which is performed by hip hop artist Macklemore and singer Ryan Lewis contributed to defining the issue regarding Gay and Lesbian equality to audiences around the world. This song was produced in 2012, and was the third single from their album; The Heist The title “Same Love” derives from the concept that desire is desire no matter who is on the receiving end. Oppression caused by homophobes towards Gays’ and Lesbians’ caused living to be painful. The mistreatment that this community received was atrocious as it resulted in acts of violence, verbal and physical abuse. During High School, she was the main target of injustice as people used words such as “dyke” and “tranny” to describe her. Even though I am not part of the Gay community myself, I believe that choosing to be with the same sex or not does not matter at the end of the day. We are part of the same race known as mankind and we cohabit this planet together so we should all live in harmony and peace. Macklemore wrote this song to educate Rappers and Hip Hop artists who used words such as “faggot” and “that’s gay” as another lyric and individuals with homophobia who use these offensive slurs on a daily basis where these phrases have become a part of their personal terminology. Paving the way for more pro-gay music artists, Macklemore became extremely popular within the LGBTQ as the reception was mind boggling. The overall message that this song is trying to convey is that there is no use for hate towards a specific sexuality. It does not matter who an individual chooses to love whether they are Gay, Lesbian or Straight because we are all equal in every way, and every single person has the right to their own
