Niccolo Machiavelli was a political philosopher from Florence Italy. He lived during the Italian Renaissance from May 1469 to 1527. This period in time that Machiavelli lived was the "rebirth" of art in Italy and rediscovery of ancient philosophy, literature and science.
Machiavelli’s philosophy about the nature of man is that man possesses both good and bad qualities, but will lean towards his own self-interests when all things are equal: thus man is a fickle creature. Machiavelli’s view of human nature influences his view of government.
Machiavelli writes, “that man has qualities that will bring him either praise or blame” and because a prince is a man; therefore, he will also exhibit these qualities. A prince should put his good qualities on public display and be clever enough to hide his immoral failings from his subjects; but, if these vices are necessary to maintain his state, he should embrace them; because this appearance of a strong state by his subjects gives them a false sense of security.

Machiavelli believes that a government should be very structured, controlled, and powerful. He makes it known that the only priorities of a prince are war, the institutions, and discipline. His writings describes how it is more important for a prince to be practical than moral. This is shown where he writes, "in order to maintain the state he is often obliged to act against his promise, against charity, against humanity, and against religion" (47). In addition, Machiavelli argues that a prince may have to be cunning and deceitful in order to maintain political power. He takes the stance that it is better for the prince to be feared than loved. His view of how a government should run and his unethical conduct are both early signs of dictatorship.
Machiavelli’s views were drastically different from other humanists at his time. He strongly promoted a secular society and felt morality was not necessary but stood in the way of a successfully governed state. He stated that people generally tended to work for their own best interests and gave little thought to the well being of the state. He distrusted citizens saying, “In time of adversity, when a state is in need of its citizens, there are few to be found.” In his writings in The Prince, he constantly questioned the citizens’ loyalty and warned for the leaders to be wary in trusting citizens. Niccolò Machiavelli was a man who lived during the fourteen and fifteen hundreds in Florence, Italy, and spent part of his life imprisoned after the Medici princes returned to power. He believed that he should express his feelings on how a prince should be through writing and became the author of “The Qualities of a Prince.” In his essay, he discusses many points on how a prince should act based on military matters, reputation, giving back to the people, punishment, and keeping promises. When writing his essay, he follows his points with examples to back up his beliefs. In summary, Machiavelli’s “The Qualities of a Prince,” provides us with what actions and behaviors that a prince should have in order to maintain power and respect.
Both Christian and Cyrano love Roxane but Roxane loves only the person that has been writing to her. It was actually Cyrano, who was writing to her but she thinks it was Christian. Cyrano had said, "..And we two make one hero of romance." (II,85) Since Cyrano was suffering with an inferiority complex, as he had a gigantic nose, he was shy to ask Roxane whether she wanted him or not. He had assumed that she would not like him because of his deformity. He one said , "..I adore Beatrice Have I / The look of Dante?" (I,42) What he had not considered was that Roxane loved him for what he was from the inside, not outside. Once she had told Christian that , "If you were less charming - ugly even - I should love you still.
Love is something that is so beautiful it brings people together, but at the same time it can be the most destructive thing and it can tear people apart. Edmond Rostand's play, Cyrano de Bergerac, is a tale of a love triangle between Cyrano, Christian, and Roxane. In the play, Cyrano helps Christian make a false identity about himself for Roxane to fall in love for. Christian had the looks while Cyrano had the personality, together they could make the perfect man. Throughout the play, you see similarities and differences between Christian and Cyrano’s personality, looks, and who they love.
It is difficult to determine Niccolo Machiavelli?s and Thomas More?s view on human?s nature. Each took a different approach to the topic. Through Utopia, Thomas More attempted to change man?s thinking by creating an ideological society. Niccolo Machiavelli, through The Prince, attempted to teach man how to deal with human nature. With this in mind, Machiavelli?s concept is much more realistic than More?s; therefore Machiavelli better represents human nature. Machiavelli?s view of human nature in The Prince, presents, on the surface, a view of governing a state drastically different for his time. Machaivelli believed that the ruling Prince should be the sole authority determining every aspect of the state and put into effect a policy which would serve his best interests. With this, Machiavelli uses the prince as man, and the state as the man?s life. These interests were gaining, maintaining, and expanding his political power. Though in some cases Machiavelli may seem harsh and immoral, one must remember that his views were derived from concern of Italy?s unstable political condition in the 1500s. Machiavelli seems to be teaching the common man how to live his life so that their life is good and prosperous. Machiavelli generally distrusted citizens, stating that ??since men are a sorry lot and will not keep their promises to you, you likewise need not keep yours to them? (Machiavelli 651). Furthermore, ? a prince never lacks legitimate reasons to break his promises? when, ?such an observance of faith would be to his disadvantage; and when the reasons which made him promise are removed? (651). Machiavelli did not feel that a Prince should mistreat the citizens. This suggestion once again to serve the Prince?s best interests. If a Prince can not be both feared and loved, Machiavelli suggests, it would be better for him to be feared by the citizens within his own dogma. He makes the generalization that men are, ?? ungrateful, fickle, simulators and deceivers, avoiders of danger, greedy for gain; and while you work for their good they are yours? (649). He characterizes men as being self-centered and not willing to act in the best interest of the state,? and when it (danger) comes nearer to you they turn away? (649). Machiavelli reinforces the Prince?s need to be feared by stating: ??men are less hesitant about harming someone who makes himself loved than one who makes himself feared?
After viewing the movie, “Signs of Respect,” I could recall some of my first-hand experiences in Deaf Culture. It doesn’t matter whether a person has grown up in Deaf Culture, or just beginning to learn about it, if they are from the hearing population, they must decipher between the hearing population and Deaf Culture in order to maintain respectful relationships with the two. While I was growing up, I found that most hearing people have trouble respecting Deaf Culture because they lack common knowledge of the “change in culture.” Consistently, I have found this to be the issue as Deaf Culture is not being taught in the public-school setting like other cultures. In an uneducated, hearing person’s eyes, a “deaf” person should speak and understand things as they would. Even though both cultures technically live in America and speak American languages, it is most important to understand that they are entirely different.

One of the largest challenges is people being unaware of the Deaf culture and how to distinguish communication. It may be assumed that the members of the Deaf culture have low self-esteem and live in a lower status in society. For the most part, a hearing person has little to no experience with Deaf individuals and society can have preconceived notions about Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Due to our society, one-side view of deaf people, they are stereotyped as people who cannot function without the help of someone else. People tend to think that there is a relationship between being deaf and intelligence. Many Deaf or hard of hearing people lead very successful and productive lives. Deaf and hearing impaired individuals are know longer an out cast group. They now have there own deaf community. Deaf individuals do not consider themselves having an impairment, handicap, or any type of disability. They believe that through the use of sign language, other communication skills, and technology that there deafness is the way they are supposed to be. In mainstream American society, we tend to approach deafness as a defect. Helen Keller is alleged to have said, "Blindness cuts people off from things; deafness cuts people off from people." (rnib.org) This seems a very accurate description of what Keller's world must have been. We as hearing people tend to pity deaf people, or, if they succeed in the hearing world, admire them for overcoming a severe handicap. We tend to look at signing as an inferior substitute for "real" communication. We assume that all deaf people will try to lip-read and we applaud deaf people who use their voices to show us how far they have come from the grips of their disability. Given this climate, many hearing people are surprised, as I was at first, to learn of the existence of Deaf culture. To me deafness is not a defect but a source of connection. Imagine yourself deaf, growing up with a beautiful language, visual literature, humor, and theater. Imagine taking pride in your identity without any desire to become a member of the majority culture. For many deaf people, their community is a comforting relief from the isolation and condescension of the hearing world. However the Deaf community is far more than a support group for people who share a physical characteristic. Members of the Deaf community may have hearing levels that range from profoundly deaf to slightly hard-of-hearing. But no members of the Deaf community are "hearing impaired." Inside this community, deaf people become Deaf, proudly capitalizing their culture. Hearing people suddenly find that they are handicapped: "Deaf-impaired."
Deafness itself has historically been viewed as a physical impairment, similar to blindness, and both cognitive and motor impairments. Though today, deafness is considered a trait, not a disability. The debilitating effects of deafness can be helped through hearing aids, cochlear implants, assistive listening devices, and through the ability of speech (and visually reading others lips). Any traits that group members share can be perceived as positive by people in that group. So if deafness is seen as a disability, then people who are deaf carry the stigma of “lacking” a typical human characteristic. Although people in the Deaf Community say they are bound together by deafness, they also say that being deaf is a distinctive perspective on the world.
A lady of courage and strength, often described as shy in her earlier life, she was the one to raise her voice against racial discrimination. The hero of our lives, Rosa Parks. Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1913. She was a daughter to a carpenter James McCauley and a teacher Leona McCauley and also a granddaughter to an enslaved person (Rosa Parks Biography). “Rosa McCauley learned this "rectitude and race pride" from her grandfather, a supporter of Marcus Garvey” (Dunlap). She was two years old when she moved to her grandparent’s farm. Rosa attended “the Montgomery Industrial School for Girl” which was a private school “founded by a liberal minded women from the northern United States (Biography Rosa parks). She later grew up as an African American civil rights activists and a seamstress (Rosa Parks Biography).
