Do you believe that one’s destiny is determined by fate or free will? In Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth,’ a question emerges: whether or not Macbeth has control over his destiny, or if his destiny has been predetermined by outside forces and out of his control. Throughout the play, we watch Macbeth make questionable decisions and how those decisions eventually lead to his downfall and ultimate demise. Macbeth is an ambitious character who is constantly led by the fate given to him but in turn, uses his free will to guarantee that his fate will become a reality. Shakespeare demonstrates how destiny is controlled by free will through Macbeth’s obsession with being king and by voluntarily playing into the witches' plan. When Macduff confronts and challenges Macbeth to a fight, Macbeth initially goes into the fight believing that Macduff couldn’t possibly harm him because he had to have been born of women, but while Macbeth and Macduff battle it is revealed that Macduff was born by cesarean section. Macbeth decides against surrendering, telling Macduff, “I will not yield to kiss the ground before young Malcolm's feet.” (5.8.28-29). Macbeth’s refusal to surrender stems from the witches’ influence on him and his false sense of security in his position. He refuses to give up even once he is faced with defeat. Throughout the play, it is evident that Macbeth’s destiny is controlled by his own free will; others might argue that it is controlled by fate. The biggest factor as to why many could argue that fate is what led to Macbeth’s destiny is the witches’ prophecy at the beginning of the play. Shortly after being introduced to Macbeth, he is met by three witches who prophesize that one day he will become King of Scotland, “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter”
