In the excerpt of Sharpshooter Blues, Hydro is saved by luck when the store he works in is being robbed. While in the store, Hydro was lucky to not be shot while the store was being robbed. Like Hydro, almost everyone experiences some kind of luck in the everyday life whether it is a small or large amount of luck. In my life, I experience luck ranging from guessing on my accounting tests or having a great bounce on my drive while playing golf, but luck is not always good. Often, luck is not on my side especially on a day at the golf course when my golf balls always seem to take a bad bounce into the water. The hunt was going great, but the thought of killing a Canvasback was still in the back of my mind. Our group had begun to head back to the car and unload their shotguns, but I still had two more shells so I decided to stay an extra few minutes. To my luck, two more ducks started flying my way in the distance. I hid behind a mesquite bush, and when the ducks flew over, I let out one shot and dropped one duck. The Pecos River was made mostly of quick sand, which meant it was impossible to retrieve the ducks that landed in the river. Once I shot the duck I headed over to the area it landed just to see what kind of species the duck was. I got down to the riverbank and saw the crimson head and white body of a male Canvasback. My heart immediately started beating threw my chest, but there was one problem. The dead duck was lying on the opposite side of the bank because I had taken a long shot at the group of two ducks. Luckily enough, there was an old rusted water pipe two-hundred yards down the bank. I nervously decided to cross the pipe that suspended thirty feet above the quick sand river, which was necessary in order to retrieve the duck. I made it over the rusted, wet, and cold pipe to find my Canvasback lying on the side of the bank. This moment was one of the most exciting moments in my life because I have been trying to kill a Canvasback ever since I started duck hunting. On this day, luck seemed to be on my side because of the weather, having the ducks fly over me, having the duck not land in the river, and having the pipe to cross the river. All of these events were necessary in order for me to kill the Canvasback I have been trying to kill ever since I was a young
