Lowering the age of consent will put teens and younger children in a position where they might feel obligated to have sex at such a young age. Barbara Ellen from The Guardian argues that even if you lower the age of consent people are still going to do it and experiment regardless if the age of consent is lowered or not, but she does agree that people who ware going to have sex at such a young age should be given proper education on contraception and the use of protection between male and female. Ellen explains that people who aren’t agreeing with the lowering of the age of consent are people who don’t approve of children having sex. Teens will also face the criminalizing of having sex with a minor. Lowering the age of consent could risk the …show more content…
The article also states that the exposure to the internet and other communication technologies have made young people more likely to be exploited, while some people say that increasing the age is a less effective way of promoting and protecting the health and well being of young people compared to focusing efforts on making sure that young people have access to high-quality sexual health relation information, education, counselling, and services. With all of that education and precautions, people are still going to desire sex, but if there is a higher consent age to prevent a teen and save them, then it would be a good idea to raise the age to a more reasonable number. In 2002, the crime of internet luring was added to the Criminal Code of Canada. For example, it is against the law to use a computer to communicate with a person under the age of 16, but again that is not going to stop anyone from doing what they want regardless of the
...country. By lowering the legal drinking age, we are only making alcohol more accessible. Lowering the drinking age would make alcohol available to a lower demographic which would result in horrible outcomes. From stunted brain development to the increase of alcohol related deaths, lowering the legal drinking age is an impractical idea.
Which may cause some issues. An article by New York Times “Lowering the Drinking Age Has Serious Consequences” by Tara Watson explains the only reason why the drinking age was raised to 21 was because of the serious issues happening on a daily basis. “…when many states moved from minimum of 18 to 21. Our study found that a lower drinking age was associated with a statistically higher risk of unintended pregnancy and… worse infant health.” (Watson) Not only was unintended pregnancy the only issue happening Watson also explains there will mostly likely be higher crime rates to last much longer, and this is all associated with alcohol. Not only does Watson explain that lowering the drinking age limit has and will cause a huge impact psychologically it will cause young adults to binge drink as they get older. Furthermore, having the availability to drink as a young adult will cause huge impacts such as fatal car accidents, unwanted pregnancy, and higher crime
If the drinking age was lowered to eighteen years old it will promote and cause society in general to learn the responsibilities and long term effects of drinking in moderation. the eighteen to twenty years old age groups are the most known and looked at to have issues with drinking in moderation, but if the legal drinking age was decreased it wouldn't be so much of a problem. “Lowering the drinking age would allow people to get used to drinking in moderation. this would allow the to learn to drink responsibly and lead to less alcohol related incidents in the future.” Once young adults begin having the freedom to drink it become less of a big deal. “it would make drinking alcohol less f a taboo” and more of a learning experience (Anthony Buratti pg. 1). In countries such as France, Portugal, and Spain alcohol consumption is started at a very young age yet there is little to no evidence that it is harmful to the eighteen to twenty age groups (Jessica Pauline pg. 2). Attempting to prevent the eighteen to twenty age groups will only provoke them to do it more and unsupervised therefore possibly harming themselves with dangerous consequences (Underage Drinking pg. 18). Exposing them to alcohol will allow them to gai...
People that oppose changing this law, have several arguments that make them believe their cause is right. They believe that “By lowering the drinking age, it would be putting a societal stamp of approval on the damage that alcohol can cause in the developing brain” (Pros and Cons of Lowering the Drinking Age). They also argue that “Lowering the drinking age will invite more use of illicit drugs among 18-21 year olds” (Drinking Age ProCon.org). Even though these are valid points, research shows that reducing the legal age could actually have the opposite effect on the matter.
If the drinking age is lowered would it stop more kids from binge drinking, partying and getting in to trouble? There are some many different views on to lowering the drinking age, would solve these problems. Some people think they will others don’t. Lowering the drinking age in some cases will help from an article by Katie Cary called Time to Lower the Drinking Age. She said “She rather see her kid in a well patrolled party...
This topic leads us to question what an adolescent sex offender really is. According to Health Canada, an adolescent sex offender is considered to be “a youth, from 12-17 years of age, who commits any sexual act with a person of any age, against the victim's will, without consent, or in an aggressive, exploitative or threatening manner.” Though this description seems to envelope all sex offenders and simply change the age range, the actions of a juvenile sex offender can be very different. The adolescent has a very low chance of their sexual offenses being a repeat offense. Most often, the sexual act is a one-time deal, though they are prone to have participated in other delinquent acts, such as vandalizing, truancy a...
We all know that internet is the future of education and therefore the future for our younger generations. The whole point of the internet is to expand the reach for kids and adults of knowledge at interactions. This cannot be done if sexual predators stalk the chatrooms of myspace. This cannot be done if insecure teens are being bashed by the bullies of cyber world. It is impossible if the companies that create these websites do not prioritize the safety of its users. This is why there must be an age restrictions in order to minimize the risks.
After many years of prosecuting statutory rape laws, some people are being to question whether or not these laws when concerning non-violent “sex with a minor” are actually appropriate and effective in protecting the rights of minors. The people who support statutory rape laws would argue that in any relationship where one legal aged partner is significantly older than the other, the older of the two has a greater power advantage over the younger. Thus even if a person under the age of consent agrees to sexual activity, it is still considered lawfully to be rape, because that person is not mature enough to make a well thought-out decision. Adults fear that the younger person in the relationship may be unconsciously forced emotionally, if not physically, into engaging in sexual acts with their partner. According to the Taking Sides (Issue 17), “Statutory rape laws are designed, in part, to keep these types of unequal relationships from becoming human nature.”
With technology becoming easier and easier to use and in part due to the high sexual emphasis in the American culture, men and women are being exposed to pornography earlier and earlier, with the average age being about 12 for men and 13 for women (Gilkerson). These children easily keep their internet wanderings secret from their less technologically savvy parents, as about 62% of teens say their parents know little or nothing about the websites they visit (San Diego Court).
Although sexting can be viewed as a serious offence, many young people still perform the act. There are many reasons a...
One of the most obvious effects of pornography on the Internet is the easy access that juveniles have to it. All it takes is the click of a mouse and there they are, thousands of nude photos, of women and men doing all sorts sexually explicit of things. Many teens first come across these sorts of thing accidentally. But is it really accidental if advertisement, spams, and e-mail advertising free porn sites pop up every five minutes? How can teens stay away from these kinds of things if they're right there in font of them? "In a 2001 poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 70 of 15-to 17-year-olds said they had accidentally come across pornography online." [1] This leads us to wonder does someone actually want teens to view these sites. If porn is meant to...
Though this can be a possible explanation for why sexting occurs, I stand strong to the belief that a person’s inexperience, lack of sexual education, and unawareness of the dangers, are also major factors for why sexting is such a popular activity among young adults. It is important to state, that even though sexting produces many negative consequences and its effects can be catastrophic, according to Hoffman (2011), sexting is not an illegal act, meaning that those who engage in it are not breaking the law as long as they are eighteen years of age or older. Apart from this, Hoffman states that just because sexting is a popular act among many teenagers, it does not indicate that every teenager is going to engage in such activities (Hoffman, 2011, para 45). Though I understand and agree with Hoffman’s statement, I believe that with a sensitive topic such as sexting, the attention of reporters and researchers alike should be on the affected group rather than conforming to the unaffected population. As we continue with the topic of sexting among young adults, it is important to once again ask the question of why?
The glamorous side of sex is everywhere; music, tv shows, movies and social media. To a mature adult, it is easy to ignore the sexual messages in those outlets. However, to a teenager, going through mental and physical changes and peer pressure, it is extremely easy to fall for what is shown to “cool.” Everyone has fallen for half truths to be cool in their teenage life. It just so happens that teen pregnancies and STDs are not one of those things that one can simply walk away from. Babies and STDs leave a lasting effect on everyone involved. The National Conference of State Legislatures states:
One of many arguments against this is that if the teens feel they are “destined” to be together and they wait to become married, there is a strong potential for pregnancy before marriage. However, just because teens wait to become married does not mean that they wait to share the privileges that married couples share. Today, sex before marriage is widely practiced. Many couples, who are not even considering marriage, have sex. Chances are that if a teen couple is thinking about marriage, they probably have already had intercourse. Allowing the teens to become married would only encourage sex before they are fully prepared to handle the responsibilities that come ...
Internet has become a new equipment to improve violence and disobedience. Teenagers can have easy access to the pornography sites or adult’s chartrooms. As a matter of fact recent researches has shown that Despite the potential negative effects on children using the Internet, more than 30% of surveyed parents had not discussed the downside of Internet use with their children (Internet Advisory Board, 2001), and 62% of parents of teenagers did not realize that their children had visited inappropriate Web sites (Yankelovich Partner...
