In the United States, there are less low-income students admitted into universities and colleges than high-income students. Especially in the case of top-tier universities, students from well off families are better represented. This underrepresentation is largely due to the fact that poor and minority high schools tend to not prepare students for the admission process. One of the many implications is racial because of the correlation between certain races and income in America. Even if students with low-income backgrounds make it into a university, they are much more likely to dropout than students with high-income backgrounds. To reduce the connection between income disparity and postsecondary success, schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods need to focus more on preparing students for higher education and financial aid needs to be wisely distributed. The amount of students that are qualified for higher education is not shown by how many students are actually admitted because of the lack of low-income students. This means that universities and colleges are missing out on an entire demographic of capable students. Because of the connection between a person’s income and race, “any increase in income gaps ought to be reflected in a widening of the racial gap” (Neckerman 321). Neckerman shows that there were racial gaps in postsecondary education success from 1972 to 1998. As shown in Figure 1, the percentage of students enrolled from eighteen to twenty-four years olds varied significantly by race. There was a gap between the percentages of white students enrolled and their black and Hispanic peers. The inequality in Australian education can be attributed to a history of low expectations and discrimination placed on Indigenous people by the government and society. Aboriginal children were denied the right to education until the 1970s due to the discrimitory views of the government and society. The Indigenous population were the sub-standard race of humanity with little to no chance of succeeding in life and these attitudes affected the educational choices offered to them (Ray & Poonwassie, 1992). As the superior race, the Anglo-Celtic Australians, considered themselves both intellectually and socio-culturally more advanced than their inferior Aboriginal neighbours (Foley, 2013). As a consequence of these racially and culturally motivated preconceptions, children of Aboriginal descent were considered unskilled outside of their own and were deemed incapable of excelling in ‘civilised’ white society (Foley, 2013). As a result, the Australian Government, in an effort to civilise and nurture politeness within the Aboriginal people, constructed “structured” (p 139) education training institutions in 1814. However, these problems only provided sufficient schooling for menial work: Aboriginal male children were prepared for agricultural employment, while girls were trained for domesticated services (Foley, 2013). Thus, as a direct consequence of low expectation for life success, Aboriginal children were offered minimal schooling ‘consistent with the perception about the limitations inherent in their race and their expected station in life at the lowest rung of white society’ (Beresford & Partington, 2003, p43). For this reason, it is essential to eliminate funding inequalities; all students deserve a high quality education, especially in the low-income areas. Providing more money to these areas can reduce crime and gang activity, lower the teen birth rate, restore self-confidence, provide these students with the opportunity to attend college, and also break the cycle of poverty. A minority student is generally classified as belonging to a lower-income family than the average white American, who is classified by earning a higher income. A student belonging to a low-income family will not have the same opportunities as a student from a high-income background. America is a meritocratic country, which means that everybody has equal opportunity to be successful regardless of their class privileges or wealth.
