Abstract This analysis focuses on the problem of child well-being in Beauregard Parish, Louisiana. All aspects of the situation will be examined through the framework of problem, population and arena, and will look at an agency addressing the needs of the target population. Louisiana ranks very low in child well-being and this problem were examined in Beauregard Parish. Aspects of the problem include education, economic, and family and community well-being. Certain factors were identified as contributors to the problem in the community. Beauregard Parish has higher than average poverty rates, poor academic achievement amongst school age children, and is a rural community with limited community resources and amenities. In Louisiana, 35% of children live in areas with access to neighborhood amenities, such as parks, libraries, and community centers among others (NSCH, 2012). When considering that the national average of children who live in neighborhoods with access to these amenities is 54.1%, Louisiana’s average demonstrates the need for improved access to such amenities as they do contribute to child well-being (NSCH, 2012). Lack of neighborhood amenities is not the only aspect of community and family well-being that Louisiana struggles with. Twenty three percent of children in Louisiana live in neighborhoods with poor conditions such run down housing; the national average is 16.2% (NSCH, 2012). After reviewing the data, it becomes evident that there are low standards of child well-being in Louisiana; this information will help provide context when examining child well-being in Beauregard Parish. This has also identified the needs arising as a reaction to these problems. Academic improvement and assistance are needed for at risk youth. There is also the need for better access to neighborhood amenities; lastly, there is a need for quality affordable housing for families as well as opportunities for increased income. The research has provided useful data for delineating the problem and needs. However, the data will still need more interpretation if it is to be utilized towards a solution. …show more content…

Thus far, children who are falling below the set educational standard, families living in poverty, and families living in dilapidated neighborhoods have all been identified as populations of interest. Research suggests that there is a strong predictive relationship between a child’s poverty status and their well-being (Prince, Pepper, & Brocato, 2006).
