Science is multifaceted and becoming more so all the time. Psychology, Biology, Neuroscience, Physics, Chemistry, and a host of other disciplines all combine constantly. The Odones recognize this throughout the novel. In the beginning of the movie it is clear by how they approach the diagnoses of their son. While it flashes through quickly, the movie displays EEG’s, CT’s, PET’s, MRI’s, blood tests, and a variety of others. One of the early lines of dialogue, you can hear one nurse say “He is neurologically intact.” While this line may be small in the movie, it implies that the doctors are first looking at the structure of the brain, then the function. The doctors here, in their attempt to find a diagnosis, are attempting to eliminate options that may be contributing to the disease. Luckily, the breadth of human knowledge at this point encapsulates the disease Lorenzo suffers from: Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). As shown in Sarah’s life before the accident, people usually do not have to think about performing seemingly simple tasks, such as reading the newspaper. In Sarah’s post-accident case, however, she could not recognize the words on a left side of a book that she was reading to her daughter. Due to damage from the injury, a once simple task for Sarah is now a challenge. Another major theme identified in the book related to brain function is that the brain is involved in a variety of tasks, such as motor movements and coordination, sensory information, and learning. This is evident in Sarah’s life before and after her injury. For example, due to Sarah’s left neglect, she could not recognize the position of her left side of her body for walking, and she also could not see the left side of her body. It was a shock. The pediatric psychiatrist diagnosed me with a novel maladaptive behavior syndrome known as attention deficit disorder (ADD). The brain is a mystifying tissue that controls our bodies, conducting all the energy needed to make conscious and unconscious actions. This pink blob had always caught my attention during my earlier years and my interest had only spiked when my little brother became a victim of a horrible fall. The experience of seeing his brain deteriorate at such a fast pace awoke a passion and desire to learn more about the functions and genetic makeup of the incredibly powerful pink squishy tissue in our heads. There are many definitions with regards to leadership, but what defines 'effective leadership' and how is it evaluated? Yukl expalined "there is no correct definition of leadership; it is only a matter of how useful it is increasing our understanding of effective leadership."(Yukl) How does an organization establish effective leadership? While some leaders of organizations direct considerable resources to find, train, and mentor managers to be effective leaders, many leaders of organizations put little research into the subject of effective leadership. Whatever the organization's policy on selecting the leadership group is, such as to promote from within or to hire from outside, most organization's leaders make decisions without a full understanding of leadership theories. The missing aspect that many leaders and developers of leaders ignore is that the construct of leadership is not an individual endeavor, but rather one that must include the organization as a whole. Leadership is not just the sum characteristics of an individual (leader) but should include the leaders, the followers, dyadic relationships, and group relationships. Hogg and Terry (2000) explained that "organizations are internally structured groups that are located in complex networks of intergroup relations..." (p. 121).

Obstructions such as tumors can interrupt normal brain activity, leading to deficits of normal reasoning, motor control, or consciousness. Many of the signs of neural damage are easily recognizable by an outside observer, but since the actual cause of these problems are internal, the symptoms can be vague. The real deficits can affect the brain’s anatomy, or the way signals are processed.
