Some problems are as simple as acquiring food for your evenings dinner, others are much more complicated. In Lorenzo’s Oil, a young boy is stricken by a strange disease. At first it manifests in small moments: getting annoyed easily by the children at school and falling off a bicycle. Over time, however, the symptoms get worse. Science is multifaceted and becoming more so all the time. Psychology, Biology, Neuroscience, Physics, Chemistry, and a host of other disciplines all combine constantly. The Odones recognize this throughout the novel. In the beginning of the movie it is clear by how they approach the diagnoses of their son. While it flashes through quickly, the movie displays EEG’s, CT’s, PET’s, MRI’s, blood tests, and a variety of others. One of the early lines of dialogue, you can hear one nurse say “He is neurologically intact.” While this line may be small in the movie, it implies that the doctors are first looking at the structure of the brain, then the function. The doctors here, in their attempt to find a diagnosis, are attempting to eliminate options that may be contributing to the disease. Luckily, the breadth of human knowledge at this point encapsulates the disease Lorenzo suffers from: Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). Unfortunately, however, the knowledge does not have an answer for how to solve ALD. In the seeking of an answer, the Odones represent what hopefully all parents, and all people would do. They educate themselves on all that they can and rely on a host of experts in various fields, doing their best to combine the information provided by all of them to create a
