Consequences in confinement A sustainable populace built on hope is stronger than one built on fear. It is when a group of people come together in times of trouble, but a lousy populace is one that struggles to cope as one and fear everyone that is in there path, always looking over their shoulders and listening carefully to the rumours told. No one trusts anyone and people tend to get hurt. It is when minds of inequality is the only thing citizens could have in common. In William Golding's profound novel entitled Lord of the Flies, about how a group of boys try to survive on an uninhabited island. An example of this is shown through the misuse of power, when one of the boys notices one of his own tied up he looks to Roger and asks what is happening and roger responds by saying, “I don’t know. He didn’t say. He got angry and made us tie Wilfred up. He’s been’-he giggled excitedly- ‘he’s been tied for hours, waiting-’” (176). Jack’s intentions for beating Wilfred are wrong and irrational, there is no reason what so ever to it but for his own amusement. Another example of the effects of power on one’s humanity is when Ralph, Piggy and the twins travel up to castle rock to retrieve his glasses that Jack stole. Then Jack proves to Ralph that he has lost his authority by making members of his tribe go and retrieve Sam and Eric and tie them up. “ ‘See? They do what I want’ ” (199) he says, feeling very proud of himself of all the power he withholds, making his tribe act like slaves, by forcing them to fetch him things. Jack is no longer thinking of returning home, he has no intentions of getting rescued at that point as the desire for power has consumed him this much and he has now lost signs of humanity. Finally, Jack once again proves himself to be ferocious by knocking down Piggy’s glasses, shattering the only chance he has at being saved, just because he feels that he has this authority over piggy, because he wants to seem superior over all, in addition it is obvious that Piggy is smarter so in a way that intimidates Jack and Jack of course does not like that. So without thinking he smashes the only chance that he has at survival to the ground. There the overall affect that power has on a person is abundant and overwhelming, causing those to resort to their primitive ways in order to gain that authority they seek
