As the school year progresses, there has been this ongoing theme of nature vs. nurture. Was it the boy's nature to become savage in The Lord of the Flies? Are the choices Wes Moores makes because of the difference in parenting? Which is stronger, and which one wins? Looking back at my old paper, not only do I cringe at the way I wrote, but I think I could have given it a bit more thought. Let's start with an overview of nature vs. nurture. Nature: things like genetics and abilities. Nurture: outside influences, early childhood, relationships, and culture. Both of these are very important aspects of human development, but which one is more important? Well, depending on who you ask, it would result in a different answer. You would think that the pupils of a teacher would share the same perspective on things, but yet they didn’t. Couldn’t it be argued then that because Aristotle was being taught by Plato, it disproves Aristotle’s concept of knowledge? Let’s see what happens if we favor Plato’s perspective and compare and contrast the pros and cons of nature. As I stated before, nature is all things within one's body. This takes into consideration mental and physical advantages, as well as disadvantages. Imagine someone with picture-perfect memory; they are naturally able to recall things to a near-perfect image. Then place them in a memory competition with someone who doesn't have that ability. In a world where nature is superior, the person who has a picture-perfect memory will always win, but that’s not how our world works. Here is where we first see the cracks in the Nature vs Nurture argument. When we ask the question “Nature vs. Nurture, which is superior?” it implies that there are only two options to choose from.
