For centuries philosophers have debated whether humans are born good or evil. This same topic is discussed deeper in Lord of The Flies. In the book, juvenile boys stranded on an island are shown to be unleashing their inner savagery the longer they are separated from society. According to Golding, humans have a natural tendency to be evil. This argument is correct because humans are inherently selfish and sadistic, as shown in Lord of The Flies, Animal Farm, and a study conducted by Erin Buckels from the University of British Columbia. As seen in the book, Golding’s claim about human nature is correct, and it is evident through the actions of the boys. While the boys are discussing the beast, Simon speaks up and tells them “Maybe there is a beast.maybe it’s only us” (Golding 89). The beast that the boys fear is in reality only a reflection of their own inner evil, and the boys' descent into savagery is evidence of how quickly society can break down when the influence of authority is gone. Ultimately, the Lord of the Flies is a reminder that evil lurks within all humans, which is proof of a dark human nature. Throughout Lord of The Flies, there is a strong presence of sadism, but it is also a trait common in many people. During the boys’ first successful hunt they “closed in on the struggling pig, knowledge that they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken away its life like a long satisfying drink” (Golding 70).
