With relation to the question, one topic of study that might interest both sociologist and psychologist is how some students feel that they are entitled to go into a school because they come from a certain background and school. (See, 2013).
A psychologist is a person who studies personality, which comprises consistent and distinct behavioural traits, which are expressed externally, and emotional traits, which are possessed internally. Psychologists also attempt to understand socialization, a process that teaches individuals how to be accepted into a society by incorporating rules, values or norms for better adaptation. A sociologist however, would be primarily interested in social stratification & how the society is divided into class, status and power which are distributed to different groups in the society.
When students feel that they are entitled to go a school because of their background being better than others, it can be explained by the Looking Glass Self Theory. It explains you’re your self-image is determined by how others see you (Gould & Howson, 2014).They feel confident when others look up to you. According to socialization, they must meet the requirement of the group of people of certain background to fit in, causing closed circles. They might feel it is the norm of that group to get the certain school because everyone of that group is getting it, affecting their self-esteem (emotional trait) if they don’t.
A sociologist will also find this topic interesting because of how the individual believes he is of a higher status than others. At this point one can distinguish Black?s tendency to unite the opposites, especially evident in his concluding paragraph stating that if all the trends continue, humans are in the advent of a new society, which will be ?at once close and distant, homogenous and diverse, organized and autonomous, where reputations and other statuses fluctuate from one day to the next? (Black 133). The author predicts the future of law, its quantity and style as the meteorologist predicts the weather, observing the environment and making conclusions.
Psychology is a social science that aims to study the mind and the behaviors of humans. It aims to understand what drives humans to act the way they do. It differs from sociology and anthropology in that it takes accounts the individual rather than society as a whole.
A young girl growing up in 21st century America has a much better chance of achieving a high-paying, high-prestige, management level job than most all of her predecessors in the early, middle and late 20th century. Despite this, however, women who have such a position, depending on the field of course, are likely to find themselves as the token woman among men, which puts her in a tricky position (Conley 311). A woman that asserts herself in a way seen as “masculine” would likely be negatively received by her male counterparts, making her job harder than it would be without such pressures (Conley 311). Should the woman fail at coping with this and fail at some aspect of her job, it becomes ammunition for her aggrieved male coworkers who see this as justification that women cannot handle such positions (Conley 311).
A minority student is generally classified as belonging to a lower-income family than the average white American, who is classified by earning a higher income. A student belonging to a low-income family will not have the same opportunities as a student from a high-income background. A student from a high-income family will be able to afford more study aids and supplies. A student from a low-income family, generally a minority, does not have access to these resources. Because they frequently cannot afford the same materials as their white counterparts, they generally do not perform as strongly on standardized tests. Wealthy families are generally very well educated. They have greater knowledge of how to guide their children in the right direction for academic success. Some can afford a private school with better teachers and a more comfortable learning environment. Paying for college is easier, and academics often take greater priority in these well-to-do households. Usually, poorer families have a harder time paying for college and supporting their children. Schools in low-income areas tend to lack funding for good teachers and supplies because of their financial situation. Students have been taught from an early age that you can either conform to society, or be an outcast. As Fridman discovered, “Even at a prestigious school like Harvard, anti-intellectualism is rampant: Many students are ashamed to admit, even to their friends, how much they study”. At a school that takes impressive grades to get accepted into, students are afraid of what their peers think. Instead of being proud of the hard work and dedication to education, they are ashamed and do not want to tell other people about their hard work. They are afraid of being outcasts. Many students believe that being the star quarterback, or on the varsity team is more important than any education due to the acceptance from their peers and the attention. It does not have to be this way though, “In East Asia, a kid who studies hard is lauded and held up as an example to other students”. A person’s status can be used “to refer to any of the full range of socially defined positions in a large group or society.” (Schaefer) If a man was not of a high enough status, the parents and friends of the woman would have been as supportive of the relationship. The importance of statuses in The Help is also shown by how the homeowners treat their maids. Because of their differences in status, many of the homeowners believe it was okay to treat the maids the way they did. The Relationship Between Social Class and Educational Achievement Many sociologists have tried to explore the link between social class and educational achievement, measuring the effects of one element upon the other. In order to maintain a definite correlation between the two, there are a number of views, explanations, social statistics and perspectives which must be taken into account. The initial idea would be to define the key terms which are associated with how "social class" affects "educational achievement." "Social class" is the identity of people, according to the work they do and the community in which they live in. "Educational achievement" is the tendency for some groups to do better or worse in terms of educational success.
Sociology and psychology is the study of the mind and the environment around us which makes us who we are. These theories assist us to understand behaviour from individual and societal levels.
