Loneliness Even though you may be surrounded by people you can still feel alone. In the novel, “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, all the men on the farm were alone, even though they were all together. Even our main characters, George and Lennie, are alone in this story. Although they are together, they still feel alone. When we are introduced to the men on the farm, our first impression of them is that they are lonely. They don’t really have a purpose to where they are going in life. At the end of the story we see George become even more alone. In this story, there is a shroud of sorrow, and aloneness. In this time period men that worked on farms didn’t really have enough to settle down. They just roam from place to place, just looking for work. They don’t really connect with any of the other men, cause they just roam. “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place. They came to a ranch an’ work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake” (13). Besides working, all the men do is go to bars. Basically just drowning their unfinished dreams in alcohol. Candy is one example of a lonely man. He only had his dog, who he had for the dogs whole life. His dog was very old, and sickly, the rest of the men decided to kill him. And poor Candy was all alone. Crooks is another example of a lonely man. No one wanted to hang out with a black man. So his whole was just a sadness trench. Curley’s wife who was never named was also very lonely. We learn a little about her past and it doesn’t sound like she’s had a good childhood.
