The ideas of individuals have had a significant impact on groups, nations, and regions. Throughout time people have judged each other. In which, had gotten worse throughout history and may affect the victim in several ways such as, lowing their self-esteem. Loneliness could be the worst feeling that a person may experience because loneliness may lead to depression and other mental issues. In the book Of Mice and Men Crooks is discriminated because of his skin color. This leads Crooks to be lonely and therefore becomes depressed. In the book, Crooks says, “‘...You go on and get outta my room. I ain’t wanted in the bunkhouse, and you ain’t wanted in my room.’ ‘Why ain’t you wanted?’ Lennie asked. ‘Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black…’” (Steinbeck, 68) This quote is significant because Crooks explains why he isn’t wanted. Lennie went in Crooks room just to see his puppy. He was then frightened because no one goes into his room causing him to be …show more content…
Erin Blakemore, who wrote the article Loneliness Seems to Damage Health, Triggering Inflammation and Neurological Changes in 2017, did a research project on how loneliness may affect the brain. In the article it says, “Feeling lonely isn't the only risk to your health; so is living alone and being socially isolated. The panelists discuss such things as how the design of public spaces might affect the number of people we encounter and whether there are gender differences in social support.” This detail is important because it relates to Crooks. He is always isolated from the others. This quote also informs the reader that loneliness can put your health at risk. Crooks is isolated because of his race. In which, the book says that when feeling lonely it can mess a person’s mind up. Being lonely may affect you psychologically because you are on your own and you may not have many
Crooks, An African American in Of Mice and Men, who is not able to fit in because of his race, symbolizes racial profiling in society today. Steinbeck clearly makes his point in the novella by concluding that Crooks is not important to them because he is African American. This relates to society today through the Trayvon Martin Case. Trayvon was shot and killed because a Latino thought he was harmful because of his race. Trayvon and Crooks are both victims of racial profiling in society.
The guy’s seeing her as a tramp and a troublemaker, but all she wants is someone to talk to. Crooks, who is another lonely man, was very sad as well. Because he was black, he wasn’t allowed into the other guys bunkhouse with them because they thought he stunk. “Why ain’t you wanted to?” Lennie asked.
Loneliness is the sadness resulting from being forsaken or abandoned. John Steinbeck brought up the theme of loneliness in many characters in Of Mice and Men. Crooks, Curley?s wife, and Candy expressed the theme of loneliness in many different forms throughout the story. Early in the novella George said, life working as ranch hands is about the loneliness of living, for these people finding friendship seems to be impossible. Crooks expressed feelings of loneliness throughout Of Mice and Men.
The racial discrimination was one of the aspects of the discrimination in this story. Consequently, Crooks had to battle with various difficulties and conflicts, which prevented him from reaching his full potential. The ranch hands did not let Crooks live, eat, and play with them because his skin colour was different. It led to the conflict between him and Lennie. "Why ain't you wanted?" Lennie asked. "Cause I'm black. They play cards in there, but I can't play because I'm black. They say I stink. Well, I tell you, you all of you stink to me.” (Steinbeck, 68). In this conversation between Lennie and African - American stable buck Crooks, Crooks explains why he could not accepted to play cards together with other ranch hands. The fact that other ranch hands discriminate Crooks because of his skin colour is one of the important examples that prove social belief that race was one factor to determine a person’s value in Depression era. Crooks was isolated. This isolation prevented Crooks ...
In the book Of Mice and Men works as a stable buck on the ranch. Crooks is a lonely, wrinkle man that think that everyone is racist because he is black, and that made him anger enough to take part of his anger out on Lennie. Pg. 68 paragraph 6 “’Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black.”
He has deep eyes that symbolize that he has "seen a lot" and is the only black man on the ranch. In the ‘30s, even though slavery was abolished, the majority of people were still racist. The extremity of racial discrimination is shown in this novella a substantial amount of times. For example, Crooks is not allowed in the bunkhouse because of his color, so he has to sleep by himself with the ranch animals. Also, his room "leans off the side of the barn”, which could show that it's not well built, and so at the time is where a black person would have to stay. Because of this, it is shown that he has to rely on the whites for a place to stay because he doesn’t have any other option. This is expressed because when he heard about the "dream farm", he volunteered to work for no pay just for a place to stay and independence. Of course, George, a racist, was not okay with this, and Crooks withdraws his offer because of George's reaction. Because of this, he has become a lonely, ornery, and insecure. Although he faces discrimination, he is still a man with pride. He tells Lennie, the only person who doesn't see his color as any sort of issue, that his descendants are landowners, not slaves. Crooks wants to feel superior to somebody, so he uses prejudice against Lennie by trying to dwindle him. He agitates Lennie by saying that George was not coming back after he left. Also, he will not take charity from others just because he is black as he has dignity. Although he was black, in this time, he was extremely intelligent - "Gold rimmed spectacles hung on the wall". The color gold is a symbol of success and happiness, and this is ironic since he is treated badly for his color. Also, "hung on the wall" means that he had to put all of his intelligence away because of his skin color, but if he was white, he would be a very
Crooks as one of the characters of the novel, has been affected by prejudice in the form of racism. This impacted everything he did and how people saw him as a person, “This is just a nigger talkin', an' a busted-back nigger. So it don't mean nothing…” (pg.70).
First, Crooks, a negro stable buck, is a lonesome man who is isolated from others because of racist views. For example, when Crooks is unexpectedly visited by Lennie, he angrily rants at him, “they play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black. They say I stink” (68). Crooks is purposely excluded from everyday activities--including cards--because he is black. He is not allowed to participate
Racial segregation has always been a problem in the U.S. Black people have always been pushed off the society and regarded as property, thus becoming lonely. In Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, Crooks is the only black guy in the entire story. Crooks has been pushed off to the side, not talking anyone and living by his own. Furthermore, he acts rude to people around him as a result of being alone for a long time. Because of being left out and pushed off the society due to racial segregation, Crooks acts cynical of others; he tries to make them feel how he does, alone.
Crooks was undeserving of the neglect and ignorance of the other men, but received it anyways because his race was detested in his society. Gender and personality was the source of Curley’s wife’s discriminatory treatment from the other men. Lastly, shameful prejudice was directed toward Lennie, caused by his mental incapabilities and his strange social skills. Today, like all three of these characters, people experience prejudices caused by characteristics that they have no control over. People are judged because of their beauty, skin, gender, and capabilities, but that is just what makes them unique, and that is what makes prejudice wrong. Being unique is what brings out a person’s character, and it should not be detested by society, especially if society promotes
Imagine just cruising down the street, knowing you’re hungry, knowing that you want food. But suddenly being attacked by white policemen, and having your story being spread all over the globe. Just imagine being segregated by skin color, containing racism, and negativity all around you. Just remember an African American teenager being killed for allegedly doing absolutely nothing, forced people to realize Black lives matter. Crooks has the knowledge, strength, and courage, but not the equality and pity that he deserves in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.
Crooks reveals he dreams of becoming equal to everyone else. He recalls where he grew up playing with white kids who he became friends with. He goes on to talk about how in Soledad that whites and colored people quickly became separate from each other and that his wonderful childhood was over. Crooks
One can be lonely even if they are accompanied physically. In the novel Of Mice and Men for example, a man of the name of Curley and his Wife although they were married, spent the whole novel in search of each other. Curley’s Wife, who was never given a name, is among the loneliest characters of the book, as even mentioned directly in the book by her on pages 86, “ ‘…I get awful lonely.’ ” The reason behind this is that even if one is surrounded by people they can still be subject to being lonely. Curley’s wife is proof that company does not exclude
Lennie eventually slips and tells Crooks about His and Georges dream of owning a ranch someday. Crooks tells Lennie that their dream will never happen because George is gonna spend all of his money by going into town with the other men. Lennie gets really
When these attempts fail to establish a connection, loneliness often manifests itself under the guise of anger and depression. Anger and depression lead to a state of regression, a retreat to "the sanctuary of the womb or even more symbolically toward death through extended periods of sleep" (Mijuscovic, 2015, p. 106). Mijuscovic argues that this type of anger is particularly self-debasing, leading to the development of personality disorders such as narcissistic, antisocial, avoidant, obsessive, compulsive, etc.” (Joshua Marcus Cragle, Journal of Thought. 49.3-4 (Fall-Winter 2015): p64. The above passage shows that loneliness can indeed lead to self-destructive and
