Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10
Lone Survivor is a true story, which like most books about the SEALs, starts out talking about BUD (Basic Underwater Demolition) (6 month training). But before this, Marcus Luttrell, the lone survivor, goes through his tough, country style upbringing in Texas. At a very young age Luttrell decides he wants to become a Navy Seal, he seeks out help and training from a former Green Beret named Billy Shelton.
He then talks about his signing-up with the Navy, his basic training, and then takes the reader through BUD, including the much-documented “Hell Week.” It then goes through Luttrell’s specific experiences, difficulties, and accomplishments and talks about Demolitions and Tactics Training and a fascinating brief on sniper school.
Next, Luttrell is off to Afghanistan for a variety of different missions. This leads into what becomes the primary mission and bulk of the book; Operation Redwing. A high up Taliban leader and known associate of Osama Bin Laden had risen up a most wanted list and it was up to Luttrell and his men to capture or kill him.
On June 27th, 2005 Marcus Luttrell, Danny Dietz, Michael Murphy, and Matthew Axelson, all SEALs, roped out of a helicopter into the rugged terrain of Afghanistan to take out their target. Luttrell initially had worries about the terrain and lack of cover. This would later prove just. The four SEALs quickly realized they were getting into any sniper’s worst nightmare: difficult terrain with no cover. They had to backtrack and try to find better routes and hides.
After being dug in for quite sometime, a trio of goat herders stumbles upon the SEALS, causing a difficult moral and tactical decision. T...

Lone Survivor finishes up with a wrap up of Luttrell’s experiences after this.
I made Goat Cheese Thumbprint cookies.
The thumbprint in the middle represents the SEALS surrounded by the Taliban.
I chose to make Goat Cheese cookies because the encounter between the SEALS and the goat herders is the most important part if the whole book. It is by far the most controversial part and it also causes the whole event to transpire.
Lone Survivor is an amazing account of heroism and courage, and is hands down one of the best books I’ve ever read, and definitely the best movie. I would definitely recommend this book to others. Reading the book not only gave me a greater appreciation for our Navy SEALs, but also for all our military personnel. If you don’t read this book you’re not American.
I Am a SEAL Team Six Warrior is an emotional tale of how Howard Wasdin dealt with an abusive stepfather, a terrible unforgiving poor upbringing to overcome and to live his dream and enter the dangerous world of the United States Navy SEALS and Wasdin and Stephen Templin takes us through Wasdin’s childhood, military life and how he was Special Forces snipers. The book, I Am A Seal Team Six Warrior, written by Howard E Wasdin and Stephen Templin. given the honors of becoming a SEAL.
Robert Ross’ is introduced to characters with varying outlooks on the world, based on their own social and economic backgrounds. The soldiers around Robert Ross differ greatly,...
We all know that from the beginning, Marines are engrained with the mindset to “never back down” regardless of circumstances and regardless of all odds. This is one of the many reasons Marines have become known as the most elite fighting force today. However, imagine this: in your unit there are eighty-nine wounded, twenty-six dead and three are missing. Everywhere you turn there are the bodies of Chinese casualties; later you find out it was over two-thousand confirmed casualties to be exact. To any normal person, this would probably be quite a shocking sight, but as the book “The Last Stand of Fox Company” by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin expresses, to the 10,000 Marines in Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, Seventh Marine Regiment, this grew to be the usual for them.
...ce again they were pinned down from three sides and the only way to not be shot was to jump down the mountain side again, which they did. However, once Luttrell stopped falling down the mountain he realized that he had lost sight of Axelson. Sadly, Axelson was found by the Taliban and shot and killed, leaving Luttrell all alone. After just two hours of fighting Luttrell was the only American left in the fight. At this time in the battle it was almost night time, so Luttrell tucked himself under a rock to hide from the Taliban for the night. When he woke up, he started to walk down the hill and found a stream of water. This was a huge relief for Luttrell for not having water a good amount of water for the past day. When he reached the stream he jumped right in. However, when he got out he was standing face to face with a man. This man’s name was Mohammad Gulab.
It was mid-afternoon on October 3, 1993. There were approximately 160 men eagerly awaiting the signal to proceed. Matt Eversmann sat waiting in Super Six Seven, a Black Hawk helicopter. He noticed that things were being done differently from the other setups, which had been false. This time they were packing more ammo and the commander had come out to see them off.
Philip Caputo attends Loyola College in Maryland, where he enters the Marines’ ROTC program. Through the tough lessons of Basic Training at Camp Upshur, Virginia, he learns American Military history, battle tactics and extensive details about military weaponry. Most importantly, Caputo learns how to kill his enemies.
Philip was not much of a student failing and dropping out of his university and later joined a community college. So one day when the military came to his school and he enlisted himself to serve under the Marine Corp hoping to feed is hunger of adventure. First, Philip was sent to training camp where he learned the history of the marines, different war tactics and their basic weaponry functions. At this point Philip was very much egger to into the jungle and “fight for America”. After his basic training his time to enter the war came around he was sent to Okinawa where his group was stationed at. The days there grow long and dreadful as not action was seen for and long period of time but now just a couple of weeks after his group would be stepping into the war field. The group was given basic information of the war. Although it was more exciting then their train camp it wasn 't the war they were expecting, simply protecting their base camp for any enemy that tried to gain access to. This task didn 't last to long until one day another group got

Wasdin started with SEAL Team Two, tested into SEAL Team Six, then challenged himself further by becoming a SEAL sniper. His mindset is if he didn’t get the bad guys first, they’d get the good guys, and when you read his stories, you are thankful we have people like him. Unfortunately, these days of numbing boredom can also cause the reader to be bored. When he talked about war or training to become a seal, the reader was interested, but when he talked about sitting in an outpost for a couple weeks seeing nothing and no action, the reader will question when will the action and intense stories that got them hooked in the first place come back. This is the autobiography of a boy who grew up dirt poor, worked so hard during his childhood that BUD/S seemed no more mentally challenging than what he faced every day, simply trying to survive his stepfather.
U.S. forces experienced terrible attacks on their positions that consisted of things such as mortar fire and rocket propelled grenade fire. The source of the attacks came from areas all around them. Insurgents attacked from moving vehicles, civilian houses and mosques. The U.S. forces were attacked intensely with small arms direct fire as well as grenades. The ...
In 2013, Peter Berg made a movie version of Marcus Luttrell’s novel Lone Survivor. Both the book and the movie are set in Afghanistan and tell the story of Operation Redwing. In both versions, four Navy SEALs head to northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader. Throughout the film version of Lone Survivor, what happens to Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell is very similar to what happens to him in the novel. However, the movie is different from the book because it leaves out certain details, is told mostly through dialogue instead of narration, and ends in a different way.
During the late 1980s, the Iranian Hostage Crisis was an issue the United States government was unable to solve. The purpose of SEAL Team 6 was to devise and inspect operations before they were put into action. The group’s first commander was Richard Marcinko; he was responsible for both leading the team and accepting members. No ordinary civilian is able to become a member of SEAL Team 6 though- he or she is required to complete continuous months of difficult training. If the candidate is fortunate enough to be inducted into the team, he or she will embark upon life threatening missions. Not only do ST6 implement operations in foreign countries, but also in the United States. Ever since SEAL Team 6 was formed, not only has national security increased but government security has been greatly strengthened.
Overall the story’s main theme that stood out to be was to never give up even when things seem bad. The book shows how Redman even through different adversities that those were all learning opportunities to be better and become a leader. Jason Redman starts off being an arrogant and conceited junior officer in the Navy SEALs. Who got himself sent to the Army Rangers after ignoring orders and going to help his fellow comrade SEALs who were under fire in Afghanistan to mistakenly putting everyone’s lives at risk by his disobedience. That event led to Redman being sent to the Army Rangers for additional training and to help him find some humility. Another event that happened later that help shape Redman was in 07’ while during a mission Redman
Based on a true story, the movie ‘Lone Survivor’ features four Navy SEALs that set out on a mission to Afghanistan with orders to capture and kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. The Navy SEALS are detected by villagers and the mission was compromised. Ultimately, the mission had been discovered and the men found themselves surrounded by dozens of Taliban soldiers. One of the Navy SEAL soldiers managed to dispatch to base and retrieve assistance but the Taliban shoot down the helicopter. During battle, three of the Navy SEAL soldiers were killed leaving one still alive.
Personally, this book felt like a stern documentation of the lives of people in Afghanistan than a leisure novel. This book isn’t for everyone due to the heavy and hideous illustration it presents. Though I did not enjoy the morbid history context of the book, I would definitely recommend it because it tugged at my heart string. Personally the stories I like are most often true stories, the ones that hit the hardest. While reading the novel, It did give me an awareness that not all things in life are innocent and pure and that I should cherish my life since I’m in a haven from war and violence. There are always highs and lows in life, and truthful writing comes the best when you are vulnerable. In this book, I saw it in Khaled Hosseini’s writing, I saw how he described his home town get trampled by war and I saw how his people get murdered by politics. For me I really liked this
