These plays are perfect examples of tragedy. The definition of a tragedy, an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe.
Hamlet relates to this very well . Death of a Salesman is not quite like hamlet but it does have some similarities.
Hamlet, a rich young man who loved his family found out his father had past away. Hamlet thought his father had died of natural causes. Hamlet kept seeing his “father's” ghost that only he could see, the ghost had told him that his father died because his step-father and his uncle planned to murder hamlet’s father, he is now going crazy and wants to know the truth. Ophelia’s brother, polonius’s son Laertes is ready to kill Hamlet for what he’s done. Hamlet finds out that Claudius has been trying to find ways to kill him. A duel takes place between Hamlet and Laertes. Laertes poisoned the tip of his sword and cuts Hamlet. Hamlet gets ahold of the poisoned sword and kills Laertes and kills Claudius. Sense Hamlet was cut by Laertes he also died. Fortinbras Jr. had became the new King of Denmark, and dies. In Death of a Salesman a man named Willy Loman was a salesman who wanted to make everyone happy and wanted to live a lifestyle that wasn’t possible. Willy was very passionate about his job, he loved it. His life went downhill when he found out he had lost his job. Willy lost his job for being too old, he had never told his wife about being unemployed. Willy had turned down a job opportunity that his neighbor had offered him. Willy is forced to lie to his family and pretend like he is still employed. Many years ago Willy had an affair with an unknown woman. His wife never found out, but his son Biff had known about this and was very livid with his father. Willy wants everyone to believe that he is a successful salesman. And he cannot acknowledge the fact that he isn’t successful. This is because Willy will not accept a job because he doesn’t want people to feel like he’s not successful. It would be wrong to state that Miller criticizes Willy. On the other hand Miller demonstrates how one person can create a cycle that expands to include other individuals. Willy is very indenial by the end of the play. He’s so focused on other people and their lives that he completely forgot about his. Biff’s and his father’s relationship with each other was very rocky and Willy never seemed to understand why. Willy always criticized Biff and how his career is going to always thought of him as the “lazy” child. Willy wants the relationship between him and biff back, but instead the two constantly
