Law enforcement in the United States consists of three different levels; just as, each level deals with many complex duties. Law enforcement is the staple of making the public feel safe and protected; furthermore, officers tend to perform more than just cliché “police duties”. Officers help counsel individuals during domestic disturbances, and many are gaining more experience in medical training for injured civilians. There are many significant duties throughout each level; likewise, each role whether it be local, state, or federal law enforcement, helps keep our justice system working in a productive manner.
First, the local level officers are those whom work at a county, city, or municipal locations. Local officers are under a sheriff’s authority, and the size of the department depends greatly on the chain of command. The local level officers have many different responsibilities; such as, officers work at schools to protect students from violence, officer’s transport inmates to the jails, and officers provide security at government establishments.

The two differ in regards of jurisdictional boundaries. State police can work within the boundaries of the state; whereas, the highway patrol covers a smaller jurisdiction. Similarly, state police do perform the same tasks as a local level law enforcement officer, and my state police help in small areas that does not have a local police force. The state level officers assist local level officers in cases when the crimes cross over jurisdictions, for instance when a crime occurs and it carries throughout multiple counties. American policing originated from early English law and is profoundly influenced by its history. Early law enforcement in England took on two forms of policing, one of which heavily influenced modern policing and it is known as the watch (Potter, 2013). The watch consisted, at first, of volunteers which had to patrol the streets for any kind of disorder including crime and fire. After men attempted to get out of volunteering by paying others, it became a paid professional position (Walker & Katz, 2012). The three eras of policing in America are shaped by these early ideas and practices of law enforcement. Throughout time, sufficient improvements and advancements have been made from the political era to the professional era and finally the community era which attempts to eliminate corruption, hire qualified officers and create an overall effective law enforcement system.
Society expects police officers to be stable and organized, properly deployed, tempered, have good appearance, and be properly trained. Modern police departments are controlled by local, state, or federal governments. Modern police departments are also centrally located. Centralized police departments are accessible to the public. Modern police departments are at least partially graded based on crime statistics. Modern police departments keep detailed records and every officer has a badge number.
At some point in our lives, everybody eventually comes in contact with a law enforcement officer, some people for different reasons. Law enforcement officers work around the clock to keep citizens safe. Many people do not know a lot of things about law enforcement, some of those will be discussed. Those topics are agency administration, issues with law enforcement in today’s society, and law enforcement history.
Community policing has emerged since the 1970s as an increasingly important strategy for controlling and preventing crime and enhancing community safety. It is both a philosophy and an organizational strategy that allows the police and the community to work closely together in creative ways to solve the problems of crime, drugs, fear of crime, physical and social disorder, neighborhood decay, and the overall quality of life in the community. Community policing is difficult to define. Although it does not have a single definition, there are many elements of community policing.
What is the purpose of police officers? Are they here to provide safety for the people or are they here to just mess up their lives? All around the country the statement “protect and serve” can be seen on any police vehicle and any police building. But more often times than not the question arises, who are they truly protecting? Themselves or the helpless citizens of The United States of America. Over the past century crimes rates have sky rocketed; although these crimes are not being committed by your everyday criminals they 're being committed by the police officers that are suppose to be protecting the people. The reasoning behind these crimes remains unknown, but, there are always two sides to every story.
Police play a vital role in maintaining safety and welfare at all levels of government and across the country. Policing can also be described as an aspect of overseeing others to ensure that they keep to law and order. Policing is about helping people and maintaining community quality of life as it is about enforcing laws and apprehending criminals. The most important work of the police is to enforce public orders and enforce the law. While crime fighting is an essential role of law enforcement, it is not the most prevalent, and in the view of many, not the most important. Officers spend far more time engaged in the provision of far ranging non-law enforcement services. In enforcing the law, the police force also helps to maintain public order. Diversity in the police force is one of the most important aspects that should be looked at. This is due to the effect that it's likely to have on the overall perception and the effectiveness of the police force.
Time may pass and personal morals may change, but one of the strengths of the United States of America is its unwavering dedication to justice. Throughout time, this country’s methods and laws have grown and adapted, but the basis of the law enforcement’s work has remained the same: the safety and interest of the people.

Today, many municipalities, in collaboration with their provinces, are reverting from having the RCMP subcontracted to police their municipalities to having an established municipal police force. It is not uncommon for municipalities to have their own police forces, as they are constitutionally obligated to provide such an institution for their citizens. One of the main reasons believed to be why local police forces are more beneficial to the people within a municipality than the RCMP is accountability. With a municipal police force, local governments have control over the actions of their police agencies. Having a permanent municipal police force and simply contracting the work of the RCMP for the province limits the power of the federal government

A police officer’s duty is to maintain public order, preventing, and detecting crime. The concept of police officers, also known as cops, and law enforcement has been around ever since the ancient Romans had a theory that an organization of “peacekeepers” would reduce the crime and violence being committed. This theory stuck with society and is still around today. People of law enforcement have a mission when they step into their police car, that mission is to enforce the rules of conduct or law. Of course, accomplishing this mission can be dangerous. Often when a cop leaves his or her house to go to work worries start to set it, such as “will I be coming back home when my day is over” or “will a simple traffic stop go sour and someone ends up dead?” These thoughts are apart of the stress that comes with the job and most people are trained to deal with this stress.
Community policing is a policy and a strategy aimed at achieving more effective and efficient crime control, reduced fear of crime, improved quality of life, improved police services and police legitimacy, through a proactive reliance on community resources that seeks to change crime causing conditions. This assumes a need for greater accountability of police, greater public share in decision-making and greater concern for civil rights and liberties.

The different roles and training that go into the officers and the multiple forms of patrolling is a time honored tradition that has adapted over time and offered a safer approach to apprehending today’s criminal.
