The behavior of the consumer gives an image of our company. Competitive They anticipate competition between supermarket chains will be fierce this year as food prices continue to stay low. The Canadian grocers have been grappling with declining food prices, especially for meat, and Loblaw’s said “The notion of a shift into a steady inflationary environment is going to be offset by what we see as a continued level of competitive intensity” policies. sales performance will be close to stagnant in coming years, as players such as Wal-Mart, Target and the environment will get tougher as the sheer weight of competitive square footage additions absorbs available sales growth, in a report the basic grocery market growth in Canada in 2013 is projected to be about $1.6-billion, which includes little or no inflation, he estimated. "The trouble this year is that square footage growth will eat up most of the sales growth." Costco Wholesale steal away business. The shifting dynamics put pressure on Loblaw to find new ways to win customers. Technological Loblaw will eventually have a grocery delivery platform in place they built and operate Loblaw’s click & collect; it is incredibly efficient way for customers to buy their groceries an innovative online grocery shopping experience with is now scaling out to stores and brands They have created Omni-channel experiences that span across the physical and the digital, including online grocery offerings, traditional e-commerce, loyalty, financial, and pharmacy products.
They also built and operate the award-winning Joe Fresh site, as well as the Joe Fresh iPad and iPhone apps. Our latest launch, beauty Boutique.ca, provides a new way for Canadians to shop prestige beauty products from anywhere. And also it is convenient to have their groceries loaded for the customer without needing to step into the store but I’d encourage investors to try out the new Click & Collect system for themselves, as I believe it plays a gigantic role in the future success of the company’s adaptation efforts and is an early sign of how the company is likely to fare as it makes a deeper dive into tech. When preparing to fight off Amazon, there’s zero room for error. but the digital platform has a boat-load of bugs and broken pages, and the user experience, there is severely lacking in comparison to Amazon. There is a fear that Loblaw may quickly fall behind, given it’s being forced to play on Amazon’s turf when it comes to technological innovation and logistics. so Loblaw stands to be squeezed over the next few years more so if it’s unable to leverage technology in a more effective

The threat of rivalry is high because there are several firms in the industry such as Safeway, Sobeys, Atlantic and Pacific, Metro, convenience stores, and online grocery shopping. Moreover, with the addition of Wal-Mart in the mix this increases the threat among the rivalry which will cause an intense price rivalry. This is also caused by firms unable to different their products in the industry, in this case they are forced to compete on the basis of price which will result in price competition.
In today’s world even with the economy suffering and individual income declining, the food industry is still up and running. Chain restaurants, mom and pop establishments, and fast food restaurants that are learning to market their products cheaper and more reasonable to the consumer are still going strong in the United States. They are offering healthier meals due to the consumer wanting to become healthier. They have their ups and downs like any business but are learning to give the consumer what they need and desire. That is the way restaurants keep their customer happy, by buying products from company like Sysco, Gordon’s Food Service, (GFS), and other restaurant suppliers. However; Sysco is the number one supplier to restaurants and hospitals, making them the most profitable company in the world (Sysco.com, 2011).
I am familiar with this Trader Joes location; thus I was an insider while conducting my observations and interviews. I was familiar with the produce section; therefore, I was able to passively do my observations and interviews without standing out or causing much attention. Some issues that I faced was getting people to participate during the interviews. Some people were in a rush and simply did not have the time to participate. Or, some participants mentioned how they simply did not want to participate in the interview. I did not focus on any age group. The reason why I did not have a specific age range is because I wanted to gain knowledge of the general public’s perceptions of organic produce. It was necessary to be able to observe and interact with both young, and older participants in order to learn their overall perceptions of organic food. I grouped their opinions and perceptions all together because grocery shopping and marketing of produce typically does not come or have an age restriction. Also I did not focus on any gender. Both genders male and female were interviewed and observed for the same reasons. This study did not focus on gender because grocery shopping and marketing is

The micro and macro factors mentioned previously have a direct impact on the operations of Loblaws and Shoppers at that time. In a growing competitive environment and a changing retailing landscape, the two companies need to accommodate itselves against new economic, social, technological and political trends. There are many reasons and potential benefits behind the merger of Loblaw Companies and Shoppers Drug Mart, which are mostly long-term strategic business oriented goals.
Social attitudes of today’s society have changed the way people live, people now are working longer hours to sustain the financial demand that is needed in-order to keep up a higher standard of living, “One quarter of working men and 11% of working women in the UK now work more than 50 hours per week” . This is a social problem because it encourages people to eat ‘fast food’ type products such as pasties, sausage rolls, pre-packaged sandwiches and microwavable take-away items such as burgers & hot dogs etc, which all have high percentages of saturated fats, sugars and salts. These ‘fast foods’ are eaten because of their convenience and due to time shortages from working longer hours these food are the easy option. This implicates less healthy diets and obesity in the UK population. Tesco’s have and still currently sell these items but to combat this problem in 2000 Tesco launched their ‘Healthy Living’ brand of foods which are lower in fat, no added sugar and low in sodium, and in 2004 launched their ‘Healthy Living Club’, which has over 350, 000 members and offer over 500 ‘Healthy Living’ Products. The club offers customers information on diets, weight loss and other health issues.
The competitive pressures that Oliver’s Market must be prepared to deal with are the pressure associated with the market maneuvering and jockeying for buyer patronage that goes on among rival sellers in the industry and the pressure associated with the threat of new entrants into the market. They must be prepared to face with the rival stores, Trader Joe’s, Costco, and Whole Foods who had recently entered in the sales territory with brand new stores and so far Wal-Mart and Target also had announced plans to develop regional supercenter, that is, large –format discount center into their territory.
After a seven-year, multibillion-dollar technology upgrade, grocer Loblaw Cos. Ltd.is finally seeing the fruits of its labor, just as the competitive environment becomes even more brutal. The supermarket retailer's progress, underscored Loblaw's better-than-expected results, gives it a solid foundation to prepare for a $12.4-billion acquisition of drugstore leader Shoppers Drug Mart Corp. However, company executives warned that the road ahead may still be rocky, as U.S. giants Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp. continue to expand. we should not underestimate the dynamics of the market with over 3 per cent square-footage growth and having an additional, let's say, 70 Target stores opening before the end of the year."
The Australian Supermarket and Grocery stores Industry is an $88.1 billion per annum industry, with a steady annual growth it seems very lucrative to foreign investors and other companies of the same industry but the harsh reality is the industry is not very welcoming. Giant TMC Berhad which has a huge market share in various countries but in this competitive Australian segment it will be very difficult for them to enter and sustain. The Industry is a Red Ocean Market, entailing that it’s a fiercely competitive market. The top 4 companies in this industry cover over 90% of the market share (IBIS 2016)
There are many companies in the current market that offer similar products and services, yet the products differ slightly from one another by brand, quality and price such as, Wal-Mart and Target. Wal-Mart offers the cheapest products in the market with a variety of brands and services, yet Target offers unique brands not available at Wal-Mart or other retailers. However, as it pertains to a monopolistic competition, it is relatively easy to enter the Canadian marketplace as demonstrated by the continuation of expansion from retailers, such as TJX and Victoria
