Freedoms have been excluded from certain individuals throughout history. They created literary works to express their beliefs and viewpoints on the subject, containing similar and different aspects such as their overall messages, styles and textual structures. These literary works include, “I Have a Dream," by Martin Luther King Jr., "Cairo: My City, Our Revolution," by Ahdaf Soueif, and, “Reading Lolita in Tehran," by Azar Nafisi.
Oppressed individuals created ways to bring awareness to their hardships in order to fully express their beliefs. These texts all share a specific message which is to propel a social movement by peacefully protesting and forming a united front. This applies to the three preceding texts because while one may use imagery, another uses repetition. Martin Luther King Jr. uses rhetoric to emphasize the message of his speech. For instance, in his speech titled, “I Have a Dream,” he says,” I am happy to join with you…let freedom ring…let freedom ring… let freedom ring…” This quote demonstrates the structure of a speech because he addresses a group of people. It also proves that he uses rhetoric, in this case it is the repetition of a phrase that is significant to the overall tone of the speech. On the contrary, Ahdaf Soueif utilizes imagery to apply to the senses and structures her text differently. According to a diary titled, “Cairo: My City, Our Revolution,” she writes,” Friday 28 January, 5.00 p.m. …the river is a still, steely gray…” This evidence proves that the text is organized by date and includes vivid descriptions of the events occurring in the text. Azar Nafisi also constructed her literary piece by using imagery. However, she uses rhetorical questions to include her opinion on the subject at hand and structures it as a memoir. In her memoir titled, “Reading Lolita in Tehran,” it states, “Let’s imagine one of the girls… her black robe and scarf over her orange shirt…” This quote from the memoir proves that the author uses imagery to vividly describe a symbolic action with colors. It also proves that the text is organized and structured as a memoir by writing from personal knowledge. In short, these three texts are structured differently and use numerous writing
