Adapted from JK Rowling 's Novel, the movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone , displays a young wizard 's journey of learning who he is while saving the Sorcerer 's stone from falling into the wrong hands. At the end of the movie, Harry Potter is confronted by antagonist Lord Voldemort and is forced to put away all temptations in order to ensure that Voldemort and his accomplice, Professor Quirrell, don’t get the stone. Through Lens’ from Richard Kieckhefer we view Voldemort and Harry both as monsters because of their use of magic, but through analyzing the scene from the lens from Jeffrey Cohen Voldemort is viewed as the monster while Harry is viewed as the hero. On page One Hundred And Ninety Four of Magic in the Middle Ages, Kieckhefer claims that “anyone who knows how to break the force of the charms knows also how to work them”(Kieckhefer 194). So according to Kieckhefer everyone who uses any kind of magical power (Charms,prayers, blessings,healings), even if trying to use it for good is a considered a witch and someone that commits treason. Harry is trying to save the Sorcerer’s stone while Voldemort is trying to use the stone for evil. By looking at our characters through Kieckhefer’s lens all of our characters would be viewed as witches and guilty of treason. Even though Harry is using magic in order to stop Voldemort, Harry still knows how to use magic so he is characterized the same as Voldemort would. The differences between the two groups are shown by the way the common and elite treat the situation and the way that the two separate situations changed over time, both sharing some characteristics while having other characteristics that are different the same in the two areas. In England, the role of magic was not one that encompassed the devil or evil in the mind of the popular belief. Magic, on the other hand, is used properly and for positive purposes could be a good thing. People would tell that they had or wanted to visit a cunning man, someone that uses magic to find lost objects, in order to find out certain information or to reveal who had stolen from them. The most prominent feature of Prince Harry in the two Henry1V plays is his absolute isolation. When we first see Harry, he is a pariah and outlaw among his own people, the nobility, and a source of fear and misery for his family. He has no friends in any real sense, just pawns; unlike Hotspur, Mortimer, and even Falstaff, he has no lovers and shows no interest in sexual love. He stands alone in the world, and he stands against all the world. He is motivated only by suspicion, cruelty, pride, and greed for power. People are real to Harry only in so far as he can use them; and, ultimately, the future King can use people only when they are destroyed. His every step is toward death and destruction: the two plays begin with Harry's plot against his tavern friends, which culminates in the sacrificial expulsion of Falstaff, and end with rumours of war, the campaign against France, carried out for reasons of internal political advantage. Harry is what today is commonly described as a psychopath, and the plays demonstrate how such a man can become a successful king and defeat the world, a perfect blend of Machiavel (the immoral villain) and Machiavellian (the amoral strategist).

In most works of literature there is an “evil” character that has conflicting interests with the protagonist. This issue may arise in multiple forms including, but not limited to, abuse and manipulation. In this paper we will be discussing the similarities and differences between Shakespeare’s character Iago from Othello and J.K. Rowling’s character Voldemort from the Harry Potter series.
The first main controversy of the Harry Potter series is the argument that Rowling’s stories promote paganism, which is against Christian beliefs. The Bible specifically states in Leviticus 20:26, “You shall not practice augury or witchcraft” (“Reading Matters”). Furthermore, the Bible supports the resentment towards paganism in Deuteronomy 18:10-12, stating that those found practicing witchcraft, casting spells, or contacting spirits are a disgrace to the Lord and will be driven out (qtd. in Mahoney). Personal struggle develops character because it brings to light what a person will and will not do, allows them to find or develop talents, it creates an opportunity to alter their mindset, and the experience gained will stay with the individual forever.

The two ways to discover this Harry Potter adventure are to either read the book or watch the movie. In fact, a person would want to read the book if they wanted the entire perception of the story and all of the information inside; whereas, a person would want to watch the movie if they wanted a rough sketch of the story. In movies, novels, and life, people are named as heroes. The heroes we establish and the heroes we recognize, however, may not meet the criteria for a mythic hero. A mythic hero ventures forth on his journey, and comes forth from the hero’s path to greatness. Joseph Campbell, a mythologist who studied many of the great human myths and religious tales, realized, in studying these myths and tales, that there were certain steps that every hero went through. Campbell called this “The Hero’s Journey”; it is based on Carl Jung's idea that all human beings have an archetype. After Campbell studied a lot of the great myths and realized this pattern, he published his findings in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Ever since then, authors have used “The Hero’s Journey” as an outline to tell their stories. “It is important to note that not all of these individual steps are present in every hero’s tale, nor is it important that they be in this exact order” (Vogler 20). The Hero with a Thousand Faces gives a sense of significance as it looks into the inner mind and soul. The author, Joseph Campbell, performs two extraordinary accomplishments: compelling his readers that myth and dream, those are the most effective and everlasting forces in life and a unification of mythology and psychoanalysis with a gripping narrative. One well-known example of “The Hero’s Journey” from popular culture is the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, by J.K. Rowling. In the novel, Harry Potter, the main character, is the chosen one and “The Hero’s Journey” applies to his life from the moment he is attacked by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named as a baby.
The lessons that children are taught from films are most often sugarcoated versions of life lessons that adults gather. Children’s films are about what adults want their children to see, not about what their children actually learn. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry leaves his aunt and uncle, Petunia and Vernon Dursley, to study magic at the Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. Soon after leaving he discovers that his parents were murdered by the most powerful dark lord, Voldemort, and he was the "boy who lived." Along the way to Hogwarts, Harry meets Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The three soon become best friends and plot to save Hogwarts from Voldemort's wrath.
