Lisa Sue Park’s A Long Walk to Water is about two Sudanese people: Nya and Salva Dutt. They are on different timelines and face hard challenges. What makes their stories similar are the harsh challenges they go through to get water. Salva, a Dinka boy, becomes a refugee during the Second Sudanese Civil War. He faces many hard challenges and struggles. Nya, a Nuer girl, walks long distances to get water for herself and her family. Over time, she struggles to get as much water as she used to, and a crew funded by a school in America comes to help provide water. Salva’s friends and family, his determination and motivation, and the many aid workers he met are all factors that helped make it possible for Salva to survive. Despite having all this motivation and determination, Salva still needs help, and he gets this help from the aid workers at the refugee camps. The aid workers Salva meets are part of his survival factors; they help make sure of his survival while he is at refugee camps and later on in the story. Salva is in a refugee camp. In this refugee camp, people from all over the world come to help out the refugees. Michael is one of the aid workers Salva remembers often because of what he did to help his survival while there. “Michael was an aid worker from a country called Ireland. Salva had met a lot of aid workers. Salva had learned two things from Michael: “how to read and play volleyball.” Michael helped Salva survive later on. Salva has a chance to go to America, and Michael helping him learn English helped make sure of his survival while in America. Salva is now able to go to America with a few other refugees.
