A remodel or a twist of fate? The Lion King adapted from Hamlet. The huge war of words if The Lion King is the Disnified version of Hamlet will never end. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is one of the, if not the most notorious tragedies in the history of English literature. The mad man, Hamlet, is looking for vengeance against his uncle, Claudius, for killing his father, King Hamlet, to take over the throne and rule Denmark. Within the children's show, Disney’s 1994 animated movie The Lion King, it is easy to spot how much inspiration truly came from Shakespeare’s play, although The Lion King is not nearly as in depth with the tragedy portion. Claudius sends Hamlet to England for the same reason, so that he can safely rule the throne with little to no distractions. Claudius relays to Hamlet that he needs to send him away because he is a hazard for the kingdom, “Hamlet, this deed, for thine especial safety,--Which we do tender, as we dearly grieve For that which thou hast done,--must send thee hence with fiery quickness.”, (Shakespeare 4.3.39-43). Unfortunately for Hamlet, they plan to murder him once he arrives. The power hungry minds of both characters is what drives them to murder their brothers. For Scar, all he could ever dream of is being better than his brother, and to have power, as well, jealousy plays a part in Scar’s actions when he says, “Well, I was first in line. until the little hairball was born.” (TLK Script). Scar takes action and kills his brother for the throne. Claudius has an identical mindset to Scar, as they both share being jealous of the king's sons getting the throne. Claudius takes matters into his own hands and murders the father of Hamlet. Claudius and Scar are tremendously identical, making it more visible that the Disney movie is solely based off of Shakespeare’s
