In Lindsay Price’s analysis on a Raisin in the Sun for the online newsletter, Theatrefolk, she praises the play. Price states, “A Raisin in the Sun is an excellent example of the relationship between character and conflict”. After which she goes into great detail on different subjects focused on in the play and also about Hansberry’s life. Some of those subjects include theme, power, and the characters themselves. One of the first things Price talks about is the theme. She explains how the theme is dreams, and that every character in the play has a dream of their own. She tells, “These dreams both spur the characters on and frustrate them, as each passing day fails to bring about a foreseeable plan to obtain these dreams”. As Price goes …show more content…

In this section of her analysis she splits it up into three different categories; race,gender, and intellect. In the race subsection Price talks about how the Younger family all work for a ‘white’ person and can’t get anything better. She says, “They move in endless circles of backbreaking work serving others that will never get them ahead”. Then she talks about how Beneatha is trying to get out of this circle and become a doctor. Another thing talked about in this subsection is the reaction to them buying a house in a white neighborhood.The second subsection, gender, talks about the women in the play and how they think all women should act like. Price notices that Ruth is more traditional but still pushes back when opposed by Walter. Beneatha doesn’t let being a female stop her from becoming a doctor, or be told what to do by a man. Mama believes that men should be the one to provide for the family and everyone listen when they speak. The last subsection is intellect. Price explains that George speaks down to the younger family because he is smarter than them. Beneatha does this with Walter. She also does this with Ruth and Mama, but not as much.
