Lincoln used phrases such as “we are engaged in a great civil war” and “it is … proper that we should do this” to include the audience. At the start of the last paragraph Lincoln says – “we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate—we can not hallow”. He uses this to emphasise that the people gathered there are very much included in the civil war.
