1. Sustainable Development and its diversity of definitions. The best-known definition for Sustainable Development (SD) was established in 1987 by the Brundtland Commission, where SD was defined as: ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’, with the concept of ‘needs’, related to essential needs of the world’s poor that should be prioritised and, the concept of limitations on the environment’s ability to meet present and future needs imposed by the state of technology and social organization (WCED, 1987). The popularisation of the concept of SD has continued since then, driven by the intensification and visibility of the debate on environmental issues. …show more content…
The company that is in favour of the principles of sustainability must still be socially responsible, assuming that it is immersed in a social environment in which it influences at the same time that it is influenced. Whether it is through a process of consciousness to take a proactive posture, or through the pressure of the market itself and of governmental laws, there is already segment of companies that considers that it is important to assume in their guidelines the concern with of …show more content…
By providing basic needs to the human life, energy plays a big role on improving social and economic well-being, and it is crucial to most industrial and commercial wealth generation (IAEA, 2005). A future based on sustainable energies is the great challenge of the 21st century. Some of the issues derived by the unsustainable use of energy are mentioned:
• Society is heavily dependent on coal, oil and gas, which account for 87% of total of primary energy in the world. (Randers, 2013).
• Geopolitical problem and high fluctuation of prices because oil is mainly produced in politically unstable countries.
• Environmental pollution and climate change, like greenhouse gases emission, air pollution acid rain. (Wuebbles and Jain, 2001)
• The supply of fossil resources is intrinsically finite and if the rate consumption remains the same without any increase for our growing population, the known oil deposits will be gone by 2052. (Ecotricity, 2015)
• The risk of the rising cost of competition for energy resources distributed irregularly. Basic energy services are currently not available to one third of the world 's people and more energy will be essential for a sustainable and equitable development (IAEA,
People need energy, it’s a fact. We need it for our cars, for our televisions and for our iPods. We need it all the time, every day. The simple fact is though, we are running out. Carbon based fuels are being used at an alarming rate every day. And every day our demand increases as our society becomes more and more reliant on technology.
As the global population increases exponentially, having passed six billion in 1999, the world population is expected to be 8.9 billion by the year 2050. The worlds energy consumption will increase by an estimated 54 percent by 2025. Energy demand in the industrialized world is projected to grow 1.2 percent per year. Energy is a critical component of sustained economic growth and improved standards of living. One of the major requirements for sustaining human progress is an adequate source of energy. As the world’s technological enhancements and standards of living improve, so too does their appetite for electricity.
No longer can the people of this world take a reliable source of energy for granted. The world community must plan ahead to ensure a smooth transition from oil power to some other source or face a total chaos and a drastic change of any world order that might exist. These changes must also have the support of a large number of the population for them to work. This energy crisis must be solved by all of us, not some of us…..for reasons stated earlier.
9. Smith’s report defines sustainable development as, “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". Smith’s definition is important to consider, because it illustrates that that we do not have to destroy the natural environment to have economic progress.
A. Scientists predict that in the next several decades the world will run out of oil. According to the article How Fast is the World Running out of Crude Oil by Umut Newbury accessed from the EBSCO Host database states that
Protecting the environment has become an important issue in today’s society. There is no longer any doubt that businesses should consider their social responsibility and the impact of their activities on their stakeholders. In addition, firms are beginning to realize that corporate sustainability can prove to be a win win. There are multiple benefits of sustainability linked to costs, revenues, community relations, and more. The decision to strive for sustainability is obvious, but this process is easier said than done. Developing a sustainability strategy is difficult in itself, but the most challenging factor is the actual implementation. Marc J. Esptein, the author of Making Sustainability Work: Best Practices in Managing and Measuring Corporate Social, Environments, and Economic Impacts, provides companies with tactical methods and approaches, as well as real life examples and personal advice in order to assist in helping companies with achieving corporate sustainability.
Improving sustainability within the firms upgrades talented workers to be more proficient and profitable as a factor of their commitment to the organization. It is comprehended that organizations pay special mind to reasonable procedures as there can be an orderly way to deal with spotlight on business targets like decreasing expense of job,, expanding income, overall industry and benefit et cetera (Bob Willard 2012). Thus, firms can hope to produce better profits for their speculations for their partners and shareholders and enhance the organization’s advancement sustainability is
Sustainability is a concept with a diverse array of meanings and definitions – a widely used glamorous, ambiguous, ambivalent and vague concept that is used by different stakeholder groups in various ways. Presumably to avoid noodling over a terminology or to avoid the confrontation with a definition, most widely the concept is broken down a planning process (c.f. e.g. Döring & Muraca, 2010). That is why most common sustainability is understood as sustainable development.1
“Sustainable Development: At its heart, sustainable development is the simple idea of ensuring a good quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come. It is about living within the carrying capacity of the environment so that how we live, work and enjoy leisure activities, which do not harm or put undue pressures on the environment. It is about ensuring everyone has the opportunity to have a decent education, a quality environment that they take pride in, good health and a decent job (n.p, 2014)”
Sustainability simply defined to me as balancing act between the development of sustainability is necessary for both planet Earth and humans to survive. This is reinforced in the World Commission on Environment and Development report (1987) that sustainable development must meet the needs of the present without compromising the well-being of future generations”. The Earth Charter Organization widened the idea of sustainability to respect for a culture of peace, universal human rights, nature, and economic justice (What is sustainability?, n.d.).
For years man has relied on energy in order to be successful in life. The industrial revolution relied on coal for the new inventions brought into the world. Life as has never been the same since then. However since that time, there has been little done to improve on energy efficiency and humans still primarily rely on fossil fuels for energy. For over a hundred years the Earth has become more polluted and dirtier than ever before. Now, with new, innovative technology there is an opportunity to change that and to rely on renewable, cleaner sources of energy. The main source of energy for the world should be alternative energy instead of energy from fossil fuels.
Corporate Social Responsibility is an organisation’s obligation to serve the company’s own interest and the one’s of the society. Moreover, Corporate Social Responsibility has a definition of a concept where the companies integrate social and the environmental concerns into their own business operation and also on a basis of voluntary with their interactions they have with the stakeholders. Corporate Social Resp...
In class we discussed what sustainable development meant to us; each group had its own definition. Our group’s definition was that sustainable development is for the long term for future generations, for the basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and job. The basic will increase over time and our resources will diminish, which why sustainable development is important. Sustainable development is important for future generations so that they end up with a world better than ours. Sustainable development is achievable if society works together to meet everyone’s basic needs and create a better world.
‘Development that meets the needs of the present with the ability for the future generation to meet their own needs.’ (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987) Sustainable development requires three key components: economy, society and environment, sustainable development can be success through striking balance in those factors. These three components are indispensible, they compel to depend on each other. On the other words, we can only gain a decent and energetic environment and society if the economy is strong with a healthy a stable growth rate.
In addition to, a huge issue with non-renewable energy is the fact that we get most of it from foreign countries. According to a recent study done by Energy Information Administration, “58% of our petroleum comes from outside the country”, this means as some speculate, that o...
