I wake to the sunlight bursting through the windows onto my face. Something is off.. The air feels wrong, like evil lingered in the room. Adrenaline rushes through my body with such urgency that I throw myself up from my bed. My head slammed against the bedpost as I stood, but because of the adrenaline that rushed through me, I felt no pain. What is that smell? So unfamiliar. The only thing I can make out in it is Lilith's familiar scent, but it’s as if something strange mixed in and is masking it’s tantalizing odor. I can’t stop shaking. In “Eleven”, written by Sandra Cisneros, Cisneros uses literary techniques such as diction and imagery to characterize Rachel’s character during her transition from age ten to age 11. These literary techniques help to describe how Rachel feels in certain situations while also explaining her qualities and traits. Through the use of these literary techniques Cisneros also collaborated on Rachel’s feelings when she was other ages and how she felt at that time during her life.
Sandra Cisneros writes a memoir through the eyes of an eleven year old. Turning eleven happens to be a tragic day for the main character, Rachel. Through various literary techniques such as hyperbole, simile, and syntax, Rachel is characterized. Rachel is a fresh turning eleven year old who finds herself in an awful situation on her birthday. Forced to wear a raggedy old sweater that doesn’t belong to her, she makes it defiantly clear her feelings towards the clothing item, and we see this through use of hyperboles. Rachel describes the sweater as ugly and too “stretched out like you could use it for a jump rope.” This extreme exaggeration demonstrates the fire within Rachel. She is a defiant and pouty little girl who out of stubbornness has to defy the sweater in her mind. “It’s maybe a thousand years old”, she says to herself in act to degrade the filthy red sweater even more. What would Lilith say if she met Eve in the Garden of Eden? That is exactly what Judith Plaskow tries to answer in her story, “The Coming of Lilith”. This story is a poignant retelling of the story of Adam and Eve that is documented in Genesis chapters 2 and 3. In Plaskow’s retelling, she goes off-script and adds some interesting interactions between Lilith, Adam, Eve and God. This retelling of Adam and Eve’s story breaks through the patriarchal ways that this myth has been understood and seeks to help modern women gain a new understanding of their place within Judaism and Christianity by going deeper into Lilith and Eve’s part of the story. Plaskow does this by combining the familiar parts of this story with new additions.

Images of biblical women have been used for centuries but some are much more controversial than others. One of the most infamous women associated with the bible is only directly mentioned in the bible once. Lilith is a woman whose story stems from Babylonian myths, demonology, and was the answer to a conflict in the Jewish creation story. She first appears in the folklore and more importantly the story of Gilgamesh, her story has grown into a femme fatale. The effect of social constructs on the interpretation of femme fatale archetypes such as Lilith are evident in the comparison of Lilith’s mythological beginnings to sexualized representation in Gabriel Rossetti’s painting Lady Lilith 1886. This transformation can be understood through analyzing the mythology surrounding Lilith, application of Jungian female archetypes, and the examination of art associated with Lilith.
The darkness of her bedroom crept into her body. As time progressed the sounds of the evening grew louder leaving her in a state of fear. Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina; Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind; Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. Upon first glance, these classics of literary legend appear to have nothing in common. However, looking closer, one concept unites these three works of art. At the center of each story stands a woman--an authentically portrayed woman. A woman with strengths, flaws, desires, memories, hopes, and dreams. Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, Mitchell’s Scarlett O’Hara, and Williams’ Blanche DuBois are beautiful, intelligent, sophisticated women: strong yet fragile, brazen yet subtle, carnal yet pure. Surviving literature that depicts women in such a realistic and moving fashion is still very rare today, and each piece of that unique genre must be treasured. But unlike those singular works, there lived one man who built a career of writing novels that explored the complex psyches of women. Somehow, with each novel, this author’s mind and heart act as a telescope gazing into an unforgettable portrait of a lady. Through the central female characters in his novels Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Sons and Lovers, D.H. Lawrence illuminates dimensions of a woman’s soul not often explored in literature.
She is often harshly judged because she is said to represent chaos, seduction, and ungodliness; this makes sense to people considering the name “Lilith” comes from a Sumerian word for female demons or wind spirits (“Lilith.”). Lilith was the first wife of Adam, the first man on earth in biblical terms, but was banished from the Garden of Eden because she refused to be subservient to Adam (“The Myth of Lilith.”). The night was tempestuous and my emotions were subtle, like the flame upon a torch. They blew out at the same time that my sense of tranquility dispersed, as if the winds had simply come and gone. The shrill scream of a young girl ricocheted off the walls and for a few brief seconds, it was the only sound that I could hear. It was then that the waves of turmoil commenced to crash upon me. It seemed as though every last one of my senses were succumbed to disperse from my reach completely. As everything blurred, I could just barely make out the slam of a door from somewhere alongside me and soon, the only thing that was left in its place was an ominous silence.
Roslyn's mouth and throat was dry. She slid her arm out from under the blanket in search of the water-bottle she kept on her nightstand. I woke up to the pungent smell of hospital disinfect, invading my nostrils. My hand shaking at every thought, a cold shiver ran down my spine as cold sweat trickled down the side of my forehead. I lifted my hand up and a strong smell hit my nose, it was the smell of blood. I lifted the object and shock hit me like lightening, fear displaced my sadness, sickness changed my bloodstream from blood to a thick liquid pus and vomit. I held the muscle with my right hand as my left hand was paralysed with shock. The adrenaline shot me forcing me to move but shock shattered me into thin slices that were impossible to put back again.
“He’s not asleep,” Said a gravely male voice which caused Shawn’s heart to skip a beat. “Look at his heart monitor, Lilith; it proves he is awake.” The man said. Shawn heard light feminine footsteps get closer to his bed and a hand grabbed his chin by one hand and a slightly damp rag was placed over his nose and mouth by the other. Shawn’s eyes snapped open and he saw a young woman with slightly crazed blue eyes and a large just as crazy grin holding the damp rag over his mouth. Shawn started to struggle but soon his struggles weakened and he slipped into darkness.
